I think the back stays are tight because they don’t need to easy the main that much. If they did ease the main it would have just increased the instability. The solution would have been to either slowly bare away or abandon the foiling maneuver and come to a relatively controlled touch down.
@Gottenhimfella3 жыл бұрын
@@Lehmann108 It would have won them the race if they'd nailed it -- and it was eminently possible, they were still in great shape through the most difficult and dangerous phase of the turn, but for some reason the fore and aft trim got out of kilter when they were objectively almost in the clear. Everyone would have been shouting Dean a beer back at base and calling him a steely-eyed killer hero, had the trimmers (mainsail and tailplane) managed to keep the show on the road - I'm almost certain he personally nailed it, as far as helming went. There was definitely not enough twist in the head of the main in response when the s hit the f - possibly they do not have sufficiently proactive controls - it seems that Team NZ have upped the ante again on that, just as they did in Bermuda.
@Gottenhimfella3 жыл бұрын
I should also point out a further gaping problem with my answer to Erick, due to forgetfulness of a realisation I'd come to a few days back: by the time it was on the cards that they would capsize, it is somewhat academic to talk of easing the main. The boat was already broken in the landing.

Major screwups like this aren't usually the result of just one failure. In this case, it was clearly 2. Failure for whatever reason to release a running backstay no doubt puts the vessel in jeopardy in high winds. But failure to immediately change course in response to the first failure is what brought the vessel down. With strong wind conditions, the helmsman must remain acutely aware of what is happening with the rigging - particularly in a high speed turn. Either lack of communication, failure to observe rigging conditions, or both resulted in a poor response to critical circumstances. There appeared to be enough time to react appropriately with a fast jibe but the person responsible for steering was clearly not up to the task.
@robinhodgkinson3 жыл бұрын
They lost steerage due to cavitation around the rudder according to one of the crew. They couldn’t change course. The rudder elevator “falls into a hole”, stern drops, bow rises, at which point they’re heading for the moon with no control. Crash!

@TheTacktishion3 жыл бұрын
when was the last time you "Skippered" a sailboat going 40 MPH....?
@cjg63643 жыл бұрын
@@robinhodgkinson Wrong. There were two options when and if the helmsman discovered fouled rigging in the middle of the turn - while the rudder was still planted in the water. He could have steered wide off course more towards the prevailing wind or off course in the other direction with a jibe, to provide an opportunity to address the rigging and carry on. Instead, he maintained the racing line until it was too late - overpowering a stuck mainsail and heeling the boat over until the rudder was hauled out of the water. When a critical piece of equipment fails or there's a failure to operate it, there's no time to think about options. You have to have the experience and instinct to react immediately. This helmsman was either unaware of the rigging problem, didn't react quickly enough, or thought he could "power" his way through. All three possible scenarios point to operator error.

I agree. It is only the last two races that count to see who wins the Prada.....but with only three teams it seems that it is a better to compete for the top seed position which then give the top seed the advantage of only having to win the final (0ne race) rather than two races (semi final and final) that that 2nd and 3rd seeded teams would have to win. This keeps it exciting to the spectators. If it is not done this way and one team gets too far ahead then it becomes pointless to complete all the planned races.
