Here I am (with Babcia's help) making my first real Polish meal. I moved from New York to Warsaw, Poland at the end of last year. It's my first time living in Poland and I'm trying to expand my (Polish) cooking repertoire past naleszniki (like French crepes). I'm happy to share a bit of life here... through food and otherwise. :D... time stamps belowww!
With lockdowns/pandemic life, and mostly hanging with my grandma - life is pretty slow here, but I hope that you enjoy this video.
I made an Instagram account to post photos I've taken around Warsaw since moving here - will be posting them to the below account (if anyone is interested) or also wants to reach out/connect/ask questions:

For some reason listening to you speaking polish is really fun for me. It is not that you speak wrongly or with an accent - you speak very good - but it's that you sound very informal, blunt. It's the way of speaking one uses when being with closest friends or siblings. One can tell that it is not the language you learned in school or that you use in work but that you learned it from your family in very personal situations. Great channel. Have fun in Poland.

Love your videos and your warm personality! I was quite surprised your Granny cooks her sauerkraut. We cook it when we make bigos but other than that we eat it "raw", cause cooking kills the healthy gut bacteria (I know, it sounds terrible but this stuff is amazing and increases your immunity to the bad bacteria :D) and the sauerkraut no longer tastes sour. :D And yes, many people still make it themselves though not as often as they used to because now you can buy a good quality sauerkraut in many shops and it definitely is less time consuming (I recommend organic Charsznicka Kapusta Kiszona, it tastes like home made). I still remember when I was a kid and my parents made it in a big barrel - they first put lots of chopped cabbage and carrot in and then us the kids, with properly washed feet, were put inside the barrel and asked to step a lot, squashing the cabbage, just like they do it with grapes when making wine. It was real fun! Then the cabbage had to ferment which took several months but it tasted like heaven (if it hadn't gone bad in the meantime, which could also happen). Usually you would do it for winter (like other stuff e.g. kompoty) because you couldn't buy it in the shop and it was much cheaper. Now not many people want to invest so much effort, they prefer to pay/buy it and save time for other things.

Huh. Funny how the same dishes, known everywhere in Poland have their own personal touch depending on a region. Where I come from we sprinkle potatos with melted pork lard, put fresh or frozen dill instead of parsley on them and we eat sauerkraut raw, with some carrots, onions, sugar and sunflower oil. In central Poland I saw mashed potatos being mixed with sour cream, tried it myself and suffered because it's so heavy on your stomach. I'll give you a tip: if you have some time on your hands, tenderize meat couple hours earlier sink it in an egg mixed with some salt, black pepper and tablespoon of water and put it in a fridge. Bread it just before frying. The meat is so much more tender doing it this way. Also try breading in breadcrumbs mixed with ground corn flakes. It ads some nice, slightly sweet flavor to it

A surprisingly entertaining and relaxing channel without anyone trying to sell you anything, even if that would be greatness of the vlogger, a pleasant and smart soundtrack, no horrible and generic stock YT noise mistakenly taken for music. Keep it up young lady. [edit] OMG... you don't cook sauerkraut longer to make it less sour, you rinse it in running water, and you wanna be careful with that as you might wash the taste away and it will be bland.

Don't wash potatoes before peeling. It just makes process more difficult (wash after they already peeled). When you buy potatoes put your nail into one and check if it's dry and white or more wet and yellow. First ones are much better for "polished mush potatoes", but not the ones with butter. This type meant to be dry and airily. In order to get them nice you cut them into quarters and boil. Finish boiling before they are get too soft (bit earlier than typical). Once they boiled remove water and put pot back on gas and keep them heating and toss the pan (potrząsaj garnkiem) to remove moisture from them. After minute or so mush them without adding butter or cream. Enjoy other kind of mushed potatoes :) Don't buy potatoes in supermarkets! Worse crap and just feeds corpos.
@marcinha1973
@marcinha1973 2 жыл бұрын
Well if they're not pre-washed and muddy (like the ones from traditional markets you mention) def wash them otherwise it will mix with the potato's moist and you'll end up with a layer of smudge and it will be easy to miss non-pealed bits :)

Also; you very much could have eaten the sourkraut without cooking. Next time grate in some carrot, a bit of finely cut onion, add a touch of olive oil and a pinch of sugar and mix. Also, also; if sourkraut is too sour; rince it. Also, the third; give the sourkraut a few chops to have shorter strands ans not hang off the fork. 😉 Or just ask babcia about surówka 😁

Mniejsze porcje akurat wszystkim wyjdą na zdrowie. Legenda głosi, że z amerykańskiego obiadu można wyżywić trzyosobową rodzinę. Sub, kciuk w górę. @@PlexiGlasss Spokojnie. Jak to mówią - nie od razu Kraków zbudowano. Czytać, czytać i jeszcze raz czytać. Musiałem go zjeść. Będę się trzymał tej wersji do końca. Cześć! PS. Dodaj sobie słownik języka polskiego do przeglądarki. Nie jest to rozwiązanie idealne, ale pomoże na początek.

(too bad masks cancel it out entirely) 14:14 you need technique, you grab the peeler close to the blade, but hold it with just 4 fingers, the thumb must be on the peeled object guiding and pushing the peeling :) oh wider pot boils faster, you just fill it entirely lol. Poland’s government actually required people wear masks in outdoor public places - the mandate has since been lifted ~around May. So at the time this was filmed it was necessary, but now people mostly walk around mask free (when outdoors) :)
