The reason radiators ‘clanks’ is because during the night the metal cools and restricts, so when the hot water rushes through the pipes the metal will start to expand and makes noises!

Wesley Wallace there's multiple steam plants in NYC. They heat the water and pump it underground and it's plumbed into the radiator. Like the plumbing for a sink but the water is not drinkable.
