So for winter guard we don’t play with instruments, we rely on an audio track to perform our shows. Pride of Cincinnati is one of the best winter guards in the game, they hold to my knowledge the highest score on record. They spend years and years getting to that level of performance, I had the honor of seeing that show in person and my god it’s a million times better in person. In my opinion color guard isn’t as appreciated as other sections in band when it’s the most dangerous and in my opinion mentally challenging, in my guard we have a saying “ swallow the fear” because at times it’s absolutely terrifying doing what we do. I’m glad you got to react to an amazing representation of the color guard community!

So WGI is more of colorguard units performing to recorded music or spoken word from time to time. Independent units are typically for adult performers while scholastic unit are formed at the high school level performers. Each state has their own pageantry organization and sub-organizations which can be use to qualify units for WGI Championships, typically held in Dayton, Ohio. So glad you that you gave these kind of shows a go since you typically love the colorguard units in the DCI theater. There is definitely a wealth of videos to watch from each organization as they have been established since the early 1970's era. Hope you continue to enjoy these amazing performance groups.

I had the privilege of seeing this show in person, my team was also at WGI competing that year, but in a different class. Pride of Cincinnati is incredible and this is by far one of my all-time favorite shows!!

One of my absolute favorite things about winter guard is how insanely supportive everyone is. Often times when teams are backstage getting ready to perform they’ll pass other teams who just got done and all you’ll hear is “oh my god your uniforms are gorgeous I love your hair you guys did so well omg good luck!!!!” And it’s all 1000% genuine. It’s also a sign of politeness to help other teams (especially your competition) fold their floors so it’s not uncommon to have 3 teams folding a floor all at once which really speeds up an otherwise difficult and annoying process. The best part through is sitting with the other teams to watch shows after you perform. We hype up the teams performing SOOOO much because we know firsthand how hard the things they’re doing is. There have been times where someone did something super cool and I couldn’t hear the music over everyone’s screaming. All around an amazing environment that I wouldn’t give up for the world :)

So there are three sections to WGI. There's the color guard which is what you just saw, there's the percussion where it is just nothing but marching percussion and Front Ensemble where is just marimbas xylophones Etc, then there's winds where it is both Woodwinds and brass. They have their own thing as well. So what you just heard was a recording. Now in response to the commentator sounding the same , that's because that's the legendary Brandt Crocker. He is the voice of DCI since 1972 to now. He is synonymous with announcing those marching groups for a very long time that they brought him into WGI to announce these groups in their final performance. So yes it is the same guy.

I was there in the stands, watching this performance, bawling my eyes out. I love Pride Of Cincinnati, and I know one person who marched this show! I can't wait until Covid is over and we can get back to WGI in person.

Pride of Cincinnati doesn't do flag features anymore, but if you keep checking out WGI videos, most groups do do (lol) flag features. Flag features are usually when every single member is spinning a flag and they're all in unison for part of it, if not, all of it. Gives you chills!

YES you finally reacted to wgi. i’ve watched a lot of your drum corps reactions but since i do guard i was waiting for a video like this 😂. to answer your question about the music there is actually no musicians on the floor. the music comes out of speakers but bluecoats indoor 2019 they had music loops with an actual musician on a little stage that year.

AYYYEE! 🙌🙌 WGI also used to be only for color guard. Later on they added a percussion division and in 2015 they added a WGI Winds division (meaning all instruments can march). This was one of my recommendations. So excited 😁

WGI is specifically winterguard, percussion, and recently indoor winds. Each is a separate thing and it highlights these groups more specifically! The thing about DCI shows vs WGI is that DCI guards have to do much more big movements to be seen across football fields. WGI winter guards can do much more intricate tricks and catches and dance things. Most of the time the performers in independent groups are adults/college age students and will often coach high school-middle school groups. They also will perform with audio tracks from musicians and things like that, not with a live band.

Hey Courtney. DCI and WGI are very much alike. Most of these performers March various DCI corps in the summer. And that announcer you heard Is indeed the same guy from DCI, Brandt Crocker.

WGI does color guard, drumlines and winds separately. For the color guard division, they perform to recorded music. By the way, Prides summer of love show is a blast.... So fun to watch.

WGI is split between guard percussion and winds, so there are no instruments with guard, no spinning in percussion and winds, and winds only consists of brass and woodwinds. There are exceptions of course like certain non percussive instruments being allowed in the percussion circuit and viceversa when it comes to winds. And percussion allows visual performers on the floor. 99.99999% of the time there isn’t any spinning going on, however, in 2020 Rhythm X winter percussion had guard members spinning in their program.

You should totally watch INOV8 2018 “Time Bomb”. It was such a crazy show to watch that year. INOV8 uses 8 bass drum in most of their shows and it’s crazy! I was lucky enough to watch “Time Bomb” about 3 times live that year.

If you want the best, Colorguard, you need to watch Tarpon Springs high school they won many championships, including the show, called the farmer, and also New York squared , The raven, tin forest, they are the best corp in the country, I’m proud as I was the first male in the schools history to be in guard.

you should totally check out Carmel World Guard's 2018 performance. it's very odd but it's totally a classic. Carmel is also a high school guard and not adults so keep that in mind :)

This person should have given you an explanation before the video. DCI (Drum Corps) has horns, drums, and the color guard. This is WGI which has a similar style to drum corps but is only made up of color guard. They compete in indoor arenas instead of football stadiums. And yes the is the same commentator.
