2008 was one of those magical years where almost every Corps had an entertaining as well as skillfully executed show. I was lucky enough to both march that year, as well as be in the stands to watch all of Finals Night. One of the best summers of my life.

2008 was just a very good year for DCI. And the Cavies are always a treat because their visuals are so stimulating and stunning. They move so fast and they add dimensions to it. Just an absolute joy. Glad someone recommended this to you. It was such an amazing year for dci. So hard to choose between PR, BD and this show.

I was actually there during at this particular performance. That was one of THE DEEPEST Cavalier shows that I've ever seen. We all thought that Cavaliers won that year. This show really took over our imagination. It was hard to describe. But, then this was then the same year that Phantom Regiment won with their Spartans show. I've seen a lot of shows, but this is one of my top 5.

I had the privilege of being in the audience that year for Finals. It was magical. This performance in particular gave me chills. The genius of the Cavies drill wasn’t just the writer, but also how they learned it. While performing, didn’t judge your position based on everyone else. You knew your dots, how far away they were from certain visual points, and stuck to it.

I'm sure it's been answered, but Michael Gaines wrote the drill. He marched with them in the 80's and aged out in 1990. He was their drill writer from 1998-2011. He's one of the most revered guard and drill designers in DCI, BOA and WGI.

The staff of The Cavaliers during the 2000’s was a dream team....Michael Gaines is the drill writer making all of that movement seamless, Andy Toth was the designer for the color guard and I marched with him and he is brilliant. Bruno Zuccala WGI directed the Corp that year is one of the most beloved figures in drum corp. FUN FACT- Michael Gaines has been traveling to Japan to work with a group called Aimachi since the late 1990s so bringing the culture into the show was second nature.

Crowns semi run honestly was better than the finals one, unlike both BD and Coats who had pretty bad semi runs. Since Courtney likes hearing pit so much, she should watch SC 2016

Cavs shows are SOOOOOO jam packed, if you blink you've missed 2 or 3 formations. You have to watch their shows half a dozen times just to see MOST of what's going on out there. Definitely gets your adrenaline pumping. BTW as best I can tell, yes the Kanji they do on the field is Samurai.

I just find it amusing how much you enjoy these performances, because I didn't think much of it when I was in a marching band in school. I don't really remember marching at games, honestly. What I do remember is marching around in a wet field at 7 on a foggy morning, wearing worn out and ratty pants and shoes with grass clippings up to our knees, or helping the director draw the chalk lines so it would resemble the football field. Or when the football team was practicing, we'd march around in the parking lot. Drummers would hit the bass drums and set off car alarms...

So just a little bit of in the know info about this show. There was a trumpet player that I marched with in 06 at the Cavaliers that was from Japan (the very same guy featured at the end of MACHINE - so you might want to watch that show too ;-) ) and this show Samurai was his age-out year and the show was directly influenced by his input. If I remember correctly his grandfather was one of the last actual Samurai in Japan. The corps was taught a few other things that I don't really remember and the proper way to bow so they incorporated it in the show with the soloists and the horn-line at the end of the opener. About 25% of the guys in this show were guys that I marched with in 06 and were some absolutely amazing musicians and performers its definitely one of my top 10 favorite shows of all time!

I'm so thankful you did this reaction Courtney. I've never seen this show from Cavaliers. Not in full. Partly, because I didn't have faith that an American corps could do any justice to Japanese/Asia (in general) instruments, subject matter or thematic follow-thru. Mandarins were the best at an Asia inspired show during their Div 2/3 - Open class days as a heavy majority of their membership was of Asian/American descent back in those days. I expected THIS to be very VERY CheeZy. I've watched about 95% of all DCI era drum corps shows, but not this one. You're reaction was spot on. I'm now very ashamed of myself for not having enough faith to watch this over the past 12 years. Thank you for bringing this into the spotlight!

they do have a bunch of japanese members every year. i'm glad they did such a respectful tribute to it too, holds up very well 12 years later. scv generally did fairly well with representing other cultures in the 90s too, i would say (miss saigon, fiddler on the roof, the red poppy). watching this from the hi-cam angle is amazing, one of the best shows for that angle in the activity's history. mandarins were and are awesome! 02 is maybe my favorite of that era, so amazing for a small corps.

That show was not entertaining whatsoever. It was no different than what the Blue Devils did from 2008-2013: overly technical and complex for the sake of winning. The only entertaining thing about it was how difficult it was. You would need to have experience in the activity to find enjoyment in that...which she doesn't have.

The ironic thing about 2008, is that most people there(including myself) thought Cavaliers would win, but Phantom literally killed it in GE. The design was not as solid as the Cavaliers, but they sold it to everyone. No one (unless your a BD fan) remembers BD even coming in second. Sorry BD fans. Cavies visual show was stunning. I was there that night. I am not a drummer, so maybe that was the Cavaliers downfall. But, that visual presentation was in my top 5 list. I know you have seen Blue Coats Downside up Have you seen Star of Indiana 1991 Championship show Roman themed? That is an awesome show. The mellophones were amazing.

Okay folks, now that she survived that brilliant show 🎎, how 'bout turning ian jhie's suggestion below loose on Miss Courtney...2011 The Cavaliers, where she'd see vibes players rotating AND tenors suspended in the air this way 👎🏽and playing. Okay, put that one on your turntable and drop the needle on it, Miss C.(And yes, I agree on 'Machine', especially if she saw the I-Robot movie; and 'Frameworks').
