The baritone that one "demon" threw during the pre-show was one that had been run over by one of the trucks earlier in the season (an expensive mistake). The design staff decided to incorporate it into the overall program....to good effect. The different uniform colors was a deliberate choice, but it was not the first time it'd been done in drum corps. Velvet Knights (you HAVE to watch their 1988 program!) had 2-toned unis in 93-94 (red in front, white in back...both jackets AND pants), and 1987 Sky Ryders had three different uni colors...upper and mid brass were entirely white, lower brass was entirely black (they were doing West Side Story, so the upper brass were the Jets and the lower the Sharks), and the drums in a grey that blended into the field...the drums themselves had white shells, and the effect was that the drums seemed to float around the field by themselves (BTW, Courtney....if you like the band 311, their drummer, Chad Sexton, marched that 87 Sky Ryders show in the snare line). Differing uniform colors can be used to different effects. In 11 Cadets there was a lot of merging. In 87 Sky, the different brass lines did NOT merge together except for the times where the gangs interacted directly in the original story...the dance at the gym and the rumble at the end.

been waiting for this one! lol. The dual uniforms just made the show so visually complex, and my dad all year being the percussionist he is was so envious of their drumline and how clean they were. And yes, the cadets were the champions of 2011. 2011 was such a fun year for shows, just so many great ones that year.

between this and the impact of Juliet (Phantom Regiment) I was truly blessed that both corps came out to Salt Lake CIty that year. It's very rare to have an Eastern and Midwestern corps out touring the far west together. Even more rare to ever have a show at Univ. of Utah Stadium.. normally held up in Ogden 35 miles north.

Every now and then a show will come along where everything just works. Show concept is awesome. It’s well designed. It’s well executed. It’s the clear crowd favorite (which is saying something because 2011 was an amazing year for Drum Corps). Phantom 2008, Crown 2013, Blue Devils 2017 and this show right here immediately come to mind. I don’t necessarily think this is one of the greatest shows of all time or a show that pushed the activity to new heights (which the Cadets have done many times before like in 2005), but it is just so cool and absolutely deserved the Gold Medal. RIP Cadets. FHNSAB.

I teach with a lot of these people who were in this corps. I marched the year after in Cadets2. So quick story about the baritone that was thrown in the air... In 2011, after a rehearsal, a kid left a baritone on the ground and a truck ran over it by mistake. After that happened, the baritone teacher picks up the baritone and instead of being angry, he chucked it as far as he could. That's how that was visual born.

if i'm not mistaken, something you might not have caught that in that drum duel, the parts splits closer and closer until they're playing opposite 16ths of each other, like individual hits opposite of each other, and like most cadet faster pieces this one is closer to 200 if not over. insanely hard and insanely good performances all around, but this feature at the time was nuts.

You know what's the saddest part of all of this? I have nearly 40 years invested in this activity as a fan and participant, and the odds that it will survive this hellhole of a virus is probably 50% at best, and you may never get to see it live. It pains me beyond measure to know that this may happen to what I consider the greatest activity---all around---I have ever witnessed. Cadets from the beginning were what got me into this activity (Rocky Point Holiday '83 and West Side Story '84), and I consider this to be one of their best shows ever. They and the rest of this activity may never be the same.

While we still don’t know how likely it is we will get a DCI 2021 season, I’m still optimistic that drum corps will continue after this whole virus. From what I’ve seen, drum corps fans, alumni, and corps members have shown so much support for the corps they love and I truly don’t think this is the end of dci.

I think 50% is a charitable estimate. With so much of the country in economic ruin right now, DCI should be a low priority for most to support. To say it plainly, the activity has simply become too expensive to participate in. It has in many ways become an activity for the financially well off where individuals are being charged multiple thousands dollars to march and shows are now into the millions of dollars to produce and perform. I can only speak for myself, but I have little reason to keep following this activity any more. I have not watched a complete show since 2017 and find no more appetite for the activity.
@dannyspoonamore4914
@dannyspoonamore4914 3 жыл бұрын
@@tellingtruthexperiencingli9355 I disagree with this assessment. I did a breakdown of the costs associated with drum corps and compared it to if a student just did nothing for the summer. The food and boarding alone nearly cost the same as what the member has to pay for in dues. In reality, dues only pay for about a third of the cost, the rest is picked up by the benefactors to the corps. I then did an estimate of what other similar youth activity would cost, and the actual costs if they charged what they should have would be in the 15 to 20K range. Drum corps is a MASSIVE value for what you get when you compare it to other youth activities. I do DCA, weekend only, very limited, and I know I spend at minimum an extra 2.5K a year doing it. Not much less than a full time corps.
@tellingtruthexperiencingli9355
@tellingtruthexperiencingli9355 3 жыл бұрын
@@dannyspoonamore4914, I appreciate your analysis and find it wanting. There are some presuppositions in the data. First, in a time of national crisis as we find ourselves in now, there is little financial justification in spending three grand on extracurricular activities such as drum corps. Many Americans are out of work and when money is tight, it is wise to make targeted decisions on what to spend income. I personally will not have my child(ren) at home during the summer doing nothing. If they can work, they will and the money they accumulate will be used for necessities before entertainment. Our differing opinions are one of perspective. I no longer find significant benefit from drum corps and perceive it as an optional expense like any other. I can find more productive things for people to do during the summer.

hahaha! at 6:21, the melody is a version of the 'dies irae' theme (it can be heard as well in many films, including star wars when luke sees uncle owen and aunt beru for the last time, and in lord of the rings in early scenes with the ringwraiths, and in berlioz symphonie fantastique, 5th movement.)

If you do plan on coming in 2022 ticketing can kind of be a complicated thing. I recommend buying from individual corps websites rather than purchasing them from DCI. They tend to have better seats available and they don't sell out instantly as DCI's website does. Phantom Regiment usually has really good options. I also recommend sitting as close to the 40 or 50-yard line as possible to get the best experience.

Little tidbit I heard about the 2011 Cadets (if I'm wrong about this, I'm sure somebody will correct me): they lost a member of the snare line midseason to an injury, and due to the nature of the show design and the drum book - particularly the massive drum break in the second movement - it wasn't as simple as rewriting some drill to close a hole. They either needed to recruit a new member to fill the hole or ask a member of the existing to move to a new spot. The members talked about it, and decided to stick with their existing lineup - which meant that a member of the Angels line moved over to the Demons line, learned an entirely new spot and new music. Exceptionally challenging midseason move, but they pulled it off.

It's kinda.... a little cheesy looking back on it now, but that was/is kind of the Cadets style. Edit: Upon watching this again with you, it felt a little less cheesy than I remembered. I think this camera edit is a little less focused on the individual 'characters' than the last one I watched which let you see how it all fit together so well. And man oh man... that drill. Cadets can always get into a company front within half a second, no matter what. And I love it!

Hi Courtney!! I enjoy watching your reaction so much. You know what's up! 💜💕🖤 Oh, on another note, the video is a little fuzzy and bright. Not sure if it's just on my end but thought I'd share that to help on your next video.😉👉
