I've been watching your videos for a good while now, and I've been so in love with all the drum corps videos you've been doing lately. BIG SHOUTOUT to all my friends who recommended this video. I had the absolute honor of getting to march this show with The Mandarins as well as be the Tuba section leader this past season. It means SO SO SO much to see people not within the activity react to the show that we spend 12-15 hours a day for 85 days in a row working on. This show holds such a special place in not only the hearts of everyone within the organization and everyone else who marched it, but especially myself as it was my first time ever performing in a World Class group in World Class Finals. Most of the season, we were teetering between 11th and 13th place. The corps was dead set on making finals but it's so difficult to keep morale up and keep pushing when you're right on that cusp of making it vs. not making it (only 12 groups make Finals). We had moments during the season where judges would rank us far below other competition, almost like they didn't want us to make finals. We would listen to tapes from the judges after every show and sometimes the judges would praise every single thing we were doing, other times they beat us down and make us feel like we weren't good enough. Regardless, we kept pushing all summer. The moment we made Finals was probably one of the most emotional and absolutely crazy moments of the entire summer, and Finals performance topped that. At the end of the show where we all lay down on the field in the big heart shape after the last big impact, you could hear everyone on the field crying tears of joy (along with absolutely hyperventilating from all the running we do at the end LOL). When we got up to walk off the field, you could see the whole group absolutely bawling their eyes out, walking off with this sense of pride and accomplishment. Right when we exited the field into the tunnel, the entire corps erupted. People were screaming and yelling. It's one of those memories that just gets burned into your head. In closing, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO! Drum corps, while it seems so popular, is an activity most people have no idea about, and it's so amazing to see genuine positive reactions of everything the members do. Even though you may not know it, your videos might be the first time other people are seeing the activity, and you in part might be inspiring people to become a part of the activity as well. I know I got my first glimpse of drum corps from a random video on KZbin and instantly fell in love with it. P.S. Ivan, Phil, Hunter, Harvey, Jordan, Pierce, Matt: I love you guys and miss you all dearly! Hope to see you guys soon

This was an absolute treat to read. As a DCI fan myself who has never been part of a drum corps yet, It's easy to overlook the hours upon hours of time in the hot sun and the emotional and physical strain that people in drum corps go through, and just call a show a "bad show". Truth is, people have poured entire summers of their time into making these shows the best they can be, and it isn't fair to them to just call it "bad".

A little background on the concepts behind the show, for those who are curious: The title "Life Rite After" is a reference to The Rite of Spring, a ballet by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky (you can watch it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKCXpJlorLljrbc). The Rite of Spring was really controversial when it released in 1913 because it broke all the established rules of ballet with its dissonant music and creepy choreography, not to mention its subject matter. It told the story of a pagan ritual, and ended with a young girl being sacrificed by dancing herself to death. The Mandarins' "Life Rite After" is a sequel to the Rite of Spring, and begins with the Sacrificial Virgin (portrayed by the girl in white) dancing herself to death. The show deals with her journey into the afterlife. The color guard represent the spirits in the afterlife, and after they drag her off stage she changes into a red costume like the rest of them, symbolizing her transition from life to death. The creepy, dissonant music during the first half of the show represents her shock as she realizes what has happened to her, as well as her fear of this new and scary world. The ballad (slow song in the middle) is True Colors by Cyndi Lauper. During this scene the stilt-walking demon things appear. They look menacing, but really they're there to guide her on her journey. One of them (my man Zach Wallach) gives her the gift of Light (the glowing cube thingy) and suddenly her perspective changes. She begins to see the beauty and color in this world that initially seemed so dark and scary. The music turns major key as she comes to terms with her death and embraces... the Life Rite After. So yeah: very avant-garde, very dark and very weird. I loved performing this show and I'm glad you enjoyed watching it!

Something else for Courtney...way back in the day -- probably until the late 90s -- Mandarins were an all-Asian corps, since they were formed for the Asian community in Sacramento. The size of the corps would vary -- sometimes by quite a bit -- from year to year, yet the quality always remained...a testament to then-director Ray Mar and his staff. Also, until the 2008 season, there were 3 different competitive divisions in DCI, based on corps size. Back in 1988 Mandarins won the A-60 division (for corps with 60 members or less...called Division III in later years) with a whopping EIGHT BRASS players! VERY happy to see Mandarins in finals...especially since it hearkens back to the days when I marched and 1/3rd of finals night was corps from California!! Well done, 2018 Mandies....well done indeed.

@samsignorelli4 жыл бұрын
Try 1983 Suncoast Sound...13th place in 1982 to 5th after 83 prelims (finished 6th). Highest ever debut at finals....and one HELL of a brass line during their finals runs. Other massive improvements would be the 20th to 4TH jump by the 27th Lancers from 1974 to 1975 (16 slots), or 23rd to 9TH 73-74 Blue Devils. (and that was the lowest BD would EVER place in finals). I rate the BD one more impressive than 27th because BD as a drum and bugle corps was only in it's 3rd year of competition in 73, while 27th had been around for 6 in 74, but had competed as the I.C. Reveries as earl;y as 1964. But the all-time greatest jump in the DCI era is 1977-78 Spirit of Atlanta...23rd to 6th....17 freaking spots -- and 1977 was their FIRST year out!

That's the sad thing...a corps with as long a history as Mandarins -- and as much competitive success as they had in the smaller divisions (8 wins in all...including a 4-peat and one win where they only had 8 horns) should have better notoriety in it's home town. Even in drum corps, they weren't overshadowed by the Freelancers, even though they were also from Sacto and were a multiple-time top 12 corps at the highest competitive level.

You should react to The Bluecoats 2016 Trumpet soloist headcam from Ben Gunnarson because it is my favorite marching band video of all time and it shows the point of view perspective of what goes inside the performers heads and is pretty inspirational and is what inspired me to continue marching band and want to do Drum Corps in the future :)

Hey courtney!! Can you please react to atlanta cv 2017 or 18. This is DCA which is another aspect of drum corps. What makes this version of drum corps interesting is that it is all age while DCI is up to 21. DCI has all summer everyday to perfect a show. While DCA has a little over 12 two day weekends ONLY to perfect a show as much as they can in that given time. It would mean alot for you to give some life to this side of drum corps!!! Thanks!

One thing that's missing is the recording of Igor Stravinsky discussing a dream he had (I think it was as he was starting to work on "The Rite of Spring") that involved a pagan ritual where the chosen sacrifice of a virgin dances her self to death. That's what the guard girl in white represents...and what this show is about....what happens AFTER she dies to please the God of Spring. For some reason -- probably copyright -- this was cut from the DVD. And this was 10th place.

I think the bluedevils show desc. was something along the lines of '“A bare bulb atop a rudimentary pole, it stands at center stage, lit by the last person to leave the theatre each night and extinguished by the first person to arrive in the morning. Though stark in stature and artless in form, the ghost light fulfills many functions...some practical, some supernatural.”- Jim Dougherty Some people maintain that the function of the lone stage light is to chase away mischievous spirits; others insist it illuminates the space for the spirits that are said to inhabit virtually every theatre, keeping them happy and contented. Without a doubt, the paranormal dance of the empty theatre is mysterious, magical and rich in folklore. The 2019 Blue Devils take a look into the mesmerizing illuminant with Ghostlight. Musically diverse, globally nomadic references weave together a world of emotion and drama. From Khachaturian to Lorne Balfe to original work by Dave Glyde, Ghostlight is an exploration of mood, melody, and virtuosity.'

You should really watch a video called "Carolina Crown Drops the Hammer in Houston" soon! It will give you an idea just how loud some of these bands are playing at...and might also give you an idea of how loud your headphones can get. It's a short and simple video so I'm not sure if it would do any good on a reaction video, but I would still love to hear that you watched it.

@@samsignorelli Wish I had seen it in person. The whole corp did well, but I'm just a brass guy myself. Some really wonderful parts to this show and great sound. Also just really cool to see a corp make it to the championship after that many years. Must have meant a lot to them.
