It's funny how you mentioned how much they killed it. I've heard a lot of stories from other corps members in other corps at the time performing all these super dark, serious shows, while seeing VK out there doing all this ridiculous stuff and beating them. 😂
@TheRCNetwork2 жыл бұрын
That was the story in 1987….we were back and forth with Suncoast Sound and Spirit of Atlanta on tour. Then there was Star of Indiana…..we never thought we could beat them or come close. We beat Spirit and Sound at finals and tied Star. It was an amazing year in 87

Few fun facts about the closer for Courtney. The shark that ate the fat lady wasn't in the show until that night, hence the crowd response, because the Jaws theme was kinda a motif for the corps. It was SUPPOSED to stop on the 50 yard line, but stalled...the brass guys coming forward all had to make am immediate decision how to proceed, and they did it masterfully. The "Not" joke has to be explained. What they were supposedly setting up for was a jab at the Santa Clara Vanguard, who's guard would do that move (and continue with it) when they'd do "Bottle Dance" from "Fiddler on the Roof," one of their more famous programs (and, in fact, SCV's entire 92 program WAS "Fiddler"). The "Not!" was a psyche move.
@hollymartein85464 жыл бұрын
Cool fun fact. I've only seen their finals performance - so I never knew the shark was only for finals. Vanguard colorguard was known for doing the bottle dance from Fiddler on the Roof. Many corps did musical theatre shows. I'm not sure if the wicked witch was a shot at Sky Ryders for doing the Wizard of Oz two years in a row in 85 and 86, or they just put her in the their show to make it more eccentric. Watching Velvet knights and all of their characters was like watching Looney Tunes, and I loved it.
@CVSoprano4 жыл бұрын
Additional fun fact (as I understand it - needs verification): the audience reaction was so loud, it blew the right side mic on the sideline.
@billn9114 жыл бұрын
I often wondered how VK managed to mock the same 1992 year SCV show. Either they knew about it early during design or they inserted it mid season and the corps had to learn it on the fly. Anyone from VK know how it was pulled off?

Unfortunately, because of cancel culture I doubt we will EVER see this kind of thing in drumcorps ever again, especially as liberal as the activity is. People are just too easily offended these days and want to cancel everything that offends them. We used to be able to laugh at stuff, but not anymore. It's really sad. I could think of SEVERAL shows that I would make fun of if I were a modern-day VK. You could make fun of technical issues corps have with electronics, really ridiculous and cheesy voiced narration in shows, etc. I'm sure DCI would have no part in it. All it would take would be one person saying, "They're making fun of the KIDS!" and it would all be over, as if these aren't young adults who understand what humor is. Though with this generation, they may be right.

There is only one...and there will ever only be one, Velvet Knights. I saw them once (in 1995) and it was glorious!!!! Drum Corps is a serious activity, but we had to know how to have fun. These guys were good...and funny!! It was risqué, but it worked!! They didn't make finals often, but when they did the audience was in for a riot!! This show was based on the sign of the times: Russia turning into a newly formed nation, Godzilla, the Energizer Bunny (battery promotion), Jaws, a Valkerie from the famous play, the Bottle Dance (Fiddler on the Roof), the wizard of Oz's wicked witch on a bike in the middle of the field, cartoons, operas, etc. So, so much fun!! a lot of the magic behind the velvet knights was due to their high talent and ability to poke fun at drum corps as an activity itself. The music and skill of the performers were top notch, despite the humorous attitude. Some of the jokes in the show are better appreciated if you understand some more drum corps history. The "NOT!" fakeout is actually a reference to the Santa Clara Vanguard's performance of the Bottle Dance from Fiddler on the Roof, which they've done a few times throughout the years, but happened to do again in 1992. The 1992 SCV performance of the Bottle Dance is really something too, which makes this joke even better. SCV placed 7th in 1992 while VK placed 10th at finals
