Great video and great effort mate! I wonder if Fish & Game stop people from catching the pest fish with their licenses. Maybe they should have a free or neat-free option for pest fish only.

Hi, i am not sure if you are still active on KZbin or not. I am also based in New Zealand. Do you mind telling me the locations in the videos? like small streams and rivers. I would really love to contribute in protecting our native environment.

And mate, trout aren't pests, they are just an introduced species... If they were pests, they would be classified as pests, have a kill on catch law, and be destroying waterways... Fish and Game and DOC manage and enhance trout fisheries, both governmental organizations.

trout are pests, they prey on and outcompete the natives, fisheries make to much money to give a shit so they just keep stocking them.

@@liammcnally9572 I am a fly fisherman but it's not like I don't xare about endemic species as well. I think some things this guy said are wrong, such as saying eel numbers are smaller in areas where salmanoids are, which I have been backcountry fly fishing and seen lots of eels where the salmanoids are, pretty sure they are also carnivorous but if they ate the same food then you would catch them on trout flies. To confirm that the eels came and grabbed some KFC, lol. But since trout have been here like every fly fisherman in the world knows it as the premiere fly fishing destination, again why it generates a lot of money. (Out of Covid times) they also aren't a pest in terms of the fact they stirr up water quality and degrade it like most other pests, they wouldn't really survive in that. Have seen lots of videos in the Rotorua lakes of eels just sitting under docks, dozens of them. When he also said that fact he never provided who did that study or where he got it from, lol. Yes you're right they eat Koura and smelt, they also eat invertebrates and insects off the surface. But Catfish seem to eat literally everything like that, whereas in Taupo you can still catch Koura for a feed yourselves. Big ones. One lake, Lake Rototoa I think it was called nesr the Kaipara harbour, was at the time one of the most untouched lakes in the country, had very high numbers of native fish and Koura, but there were trout in there. Was only until the infamous Stewart Smith illegally put Rudd in there and many other locations, did the numbers drop by like some 99%, because Rudd eat native freshwater weeds, destroying their habit type thing. Trout predate on these things but in some cases it seems to create a balanced ecosystem with the predator on top, but everything else still produces, but when Catfish come in they just completely wipe every endemic and native thing out, as well as trout eggs, so they're the nasty ones in that area.

Also I did not know this sorry I am commenting so much but I find your video very interesting. There used to be goldfish in Rotorua's Lake Anawhenua, and trout used to prey on them and get huge. I was not alive at this stage, but my father always told me all about the times where this was a reality. He has told me that they are no longer there anymore, they have probably been culled or eaten by the trout, but until I watched this video, I did not realize that they stir up the bottom like Koi carp, because my father also told me that Lake Anawhenua at the time was not very clear, so really they are like a smaller Koi Carp, from what I understand here.

Trout do very little damage to our native fish. I've been fly-fishing most of my life and when looking into the ponds and back waters of our rivers where trout populate well, our native species are present. Certainly in all our back country creeks they are abundant, as long as the water way's are clean. Trout eat mostly insects in different stages of their evolution. When taking Trout for the table, I will always examine what's in their tummies, I have only ever caught one fish with a whitebait in its stomach, but have found their preferred food, insects everytime. Yes the odd Trout snaps one or two up, but largely they are in a good balance situation. If we are to address the survival of our native fish, we should address pollution and invasive species that cannot coexist. Trout coexist very well and bring this country fortune in that sector.

@michaelmeares781
@michaelmeares781 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can feed New Zealand Natives things like prawns, white fish, mussels, and ox heart - those are the easier options. Ideally you should feed them live insects too as that's what they naturally eat - things like blood worms, mosquitos/mosquito larvae, crickets etc. Don't feed them red meats
