NZ Basic Fishing | Waikato Lakes and River | Multi Species

Hello and welcome to another video of basic fishing. In this video I decided to try and target some trout at the Waikato but unfortunately the trout hasn’t been active over the past several weeks and we improvised around and explored new tactics to try and catch some trout around the lakes and rivers located around the Waikato. We managed to have lot of fun catching fish and explore new places and trying new tactics. This goes to show by expending your fishing options, you are mostly likely to catch anything. Even though the trout didn’t turn up, it was still great to catch different species of fish on the Waikato using both lures and worm baits. We ended up catching a few perch, carp and an eel. Really do hope the big trout will turn up again.

Great video, You should be careful filming yourselves catching and releasing perch and Koi as that's a fine-able offence.

the koi i didn't release but my mate did. as for perch, there r no rules stating that they should b killed wen caught.

It technically wasn't a koi it was a hybrid but the reality is releasing them back into the water they came from in a place like the waikato won't make a scrap of difference. They take tonnes out with the annual bow hunting comp and even that doesn't make a dent in the population so returning an individual fish to the water isn't going to matter. To be honest doc blame koi for things that they are not even responsible for. Dirty farming practises and run off is what's causing the real issues with our freshwater but the govt makes to much money from farming so carp are an easy thing for them to blame. Overseas carp and trout live happily together in Crystal clear waterways. Carp can cause a bit of damage in lakes but they are a very small part of the problem. I will not kill innocent animals on the grounds of a flawed doc policy if they wish to fine me so be it. Peter kills all his carp though

Hey great video dude, man there is lots of cool places in the waikato- it looks like a fishermans playground! I come from the Wairarapa and there are a few places here too but not quite as large and expansive as this! Keep up the good work, i hope to get some fishing videos out this summer too! It's a koi carp goldfish hybrid. They are pretty common in the waikato

yes but only if you wish to target sport fish. pest fish or eels don't require license you just need to prove that you are fishing for that particular species

Different rivers and lakes have different rules look up the DOC website for rules If you get caught transferring live pest fish you can be jailed

To those against releasing the coarse fish back into the water, they're classed as a "sport fish", (including rudd), in the Auckland Waikato region, with some exceptions under the regulations and fishing act. There's no penalty for releasing them back in. I personally wouldn't release it back alive. They're actually not bad eating cooked right, particularly Asian style.

Kia ora, yes that is huntly but Hamilton further up is the Waikato river just letting you know filming yourself cathing koi and perch so be careful nextime bud
