I always remembered Hartley making his comeback against Leinster in Heineken cup and hitting Sean o Brian, complete cheap shot. I’m sure there’s many more

Sean O'BRIEN would slaughter him.. OBrein was the smart man not to react.. Hartley was tuned the wrong way if he had discipline would of been top player hurt his club and England more times. Think it was when England ref sent him off in Heineken cup his face said it all

Never liked Hartley. Guy's always been vicious and borderline psycho. He accumulated 60 weeks of bans in total in his career. That's more than a calendar year.
@garylake1676
@garylake1676 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, it was embarrassing to have him as our captain, as he was never capable of playing within himself, I did feel that he was made captain for two reasons, to actually place some responsibility on his shoulders, and as he was clearly our best hooker, to ensure that he was not accountable to a different captain who would not be able to handle him.
@JTM1809
@JTM1809 2 жыл бұрын
@@garylake1676 Good points. I believe, there's a third reason as well. I believe Eddie Jones simply loves this antagonistic character type. The street bully kind, that works on the margins of the law. It lends itself well to the siege mentality Eddie wants to constantly instil. That's why he had Hartley as a captain, and Farrell after him. Both universally respected for their skill, but equally universally disliked by their opposition. From this perspective, it seems a bit odd, that he went with the soft-spoken and gentlemanly Tom Curry for that odd game, and now with the critically thinking, almost an intellectual type of Courtney Lawes, but I guess it worked because Lawes is still an intimidating dominant tackler on the field with full tattoo sleeves, even though he's an articulate and coherent autonomous thinker off the field.

Heartley had a chequered past however when he was given the captaincy he really did switch on I don’t think he was the most skilled player but he was good enough for international and his leadership kept him in there and all the analysis he now does for BT I actually think he’s very observant and a very intelligent pundit

@OfFiCiAllCiNnAmOn
@OfFiCiAllCiNnAmOn 2 жыл бұрын
gatland was seriously fucked over by the blazers at the irfu and has a legitimate beef with them...but it does seem to have spilled over into his dealings with irish players over the years...especially some of his lions selections. i would say when it comes to playing against ireland he is extra motivated to beat us. but i wouldnt say he hates irish people...just not particularly fond of the irish rugby setup and its reps

@@sharifela7993 gatland was the one who started the turnaround in the international team...we were literally a joke throughout the 1990s winning less than one game per season on average in the 5 nations...in 2000 he brought in a load of new players and we won 3 games for the first time since the 80's. in 2001 we were a bad result in scotland away from a grand slam...then he got the boot and o'sullivan took over...who was gatlands assistant. i have no idea if there was 'backstabbing' but it wasnt a good look at the time for eddie and i am sure gatland felt betrayed by all concerned. part of the problem for gatland was ireland's worst ever (to that time) world cup performance - failing to reach the quarter final in 1999 even though we qualified from 2nd in the group it was only good enough for a playoff to get to the quarters (ironically a feat only surpassed in shittiness by o'sullivan himself in 2007 when they didnt even get out of the group). gatland would argue he had set ireland on course for the improvement we have seen since the dreadful 90s and was shoved out while still on an upward trajectory.

@Driver2616
@Driver2616 9 ай бұрын
OK. So talk. For starters here, O’Mahony was always deemed likely to throw a left jab or a right uppercut, but only in self defence. He never led with violence. He never started anything. He is/was a bloody bastard to play against, niggling, slagging off, trying to incite a reaction, playing right on the edge of the laws, bloody infuriating nuisance. And he’ll defend his teammates both vocally and physically. But one thing he’s not is a cheating, cheap shot merchant.
