In this historical exploration, we dive deep into the theory that Spanish explorer Juan Fernandez may have reached the shores of New Zealand in the 16th century-an entire century before Abel Tasman’s famous expedition.
We explore the evidence, including the intriguing 1500s iron helmet found in Wellington Harbor and its potential connection to Spanish voyages.
Is it possible that this journey, lost to time, was the first European contact with Aotearoa?

When I was in school an high school in Australia I was always taught over an over that Captain Cook discovered Australia / New Zealand an helped them develop . As I got older an actually listened an dug into myself I realised our school system will only tell the English side there’s too many other ships from other countries which sailed to Australia / New Zealand centuries before Captain Cook arrived .

It's worth pointing out that the Spaniards also described the skin colour of the indigenous people of Chile as "fair," so, it wouldn't be strange for them to have called the Maori fair as well. Apart from European people, the Spaniards had probably seen the skin colour of the people from sub-Saharan Africa, which is a lot darker. In their view, native Chileans and Maori would have been fair in comparison. Also in the topic of skin colours, dismissing Mohitore's story about the Spanish ship around East Cape because the Maori said those people had white skin does not make much sense. Those dismissing that story seem to assume that those Spaniards either did not have white skin, or that those Maori folk did not see them as having white skin. And even though Spaniards tend to have a darker skin tone than most people of British origin (the most common origin of NZ-Europeans), light-skinned Spaniards are not rare. Also, compared to the skin colour of Maori, the Spaniards would have looked quite pale, which would explain why Mohitore referred to these visitors as fairy people.

It's called olive skin..yet depending on how much sun our skin gets, if not enough sun or sun exposure, our skin can become lighter if too much sun we can become quite dark if there's a balance of no sun and sun, we stay an olive colour

Unfortunately for the makers of this, one Spanish helmet does not prove a visit. It might well have been an artifact brought to NZ anytime in the 19th or 29th centuries and lost/thrown overboard. There's absolutely zero archeological context for the find, so any stories about it are made up.

@@darrelhenley-mc9dw try punctuation so we can all understand what you're saying. As regards your comments, where's your DNA evidence? Where's your physical evidence? There is none, because mythology is not history. History is what can be proven, and is reviewed after further evidence comes to light. To date there is zero evidence of any pre -Tasman European or Oriental arrival in NZ, other than the original Maori settlement. Mythology isn't history. Science is.

Many years ago We were taught at school that a Spanish ship's bell was found well above high tide mark . It was either Doubtful sound or Dusky Sound. I can't remember which. We were also taught that Leif Ericson was the first European to find America. Not columbus or Vespucci as was popularly believed then. Not all old knowledge is false nor should it be dismissed lightly just because it doesn't agree with modern opinons that are more distant away from the actual event.

Hey, could you please pinpoint what the crap in here is so we can all learn? otherwise it may aswel be as true as any maori oral history that mostly has no scientific backup itself that we all have to play pretend as fact? Lets say, other than all the extreme bush and scrub burning, murder, rape, slavery, genocide, wiping out entire ancient species that roamed the land for a million years in less than a couple hundred and yet now somehow acting like protectors of the land?? like a bunch of liars!! all this we empirically can prove happened! They had to make up a saying called helicopter science to get people to stop pointing it out even though its true and recorded all over the world, So could you be a bit more clear tother than just calling it crap? be educational thanks. Tepapa has plenty of items that were not from maori that were found here, thats enough to at least realize others were here. If you cant get it then you sir are insane or a liar.
