As long as we keep telling ourselves how clean and green we are, we can apparently cause all the destruction to the environment that we want. What a smug little country we have become. The govt ditched Fisheries Research Division in the late 1980s. They would go out on the fishing boats (foreign and local) to monitor what was going on, what was caught (including by-catch) and how much they caught. Since then, it seems our coastal fishing has almost disappeared - like the fish - which is why these boats have gone to international waters. Where are all the squid-jiggers now? Or the Orange Roughy, the crayfishers, the scallop dredgers etc? Gone! Past mismanagement has caused the current mismanagement, and no one with any power is looking at the big picture or the future.

Shamefull behavior, but nothing new. I went trawling 20 years ago off the west coast of newzealand and the catch was appalling, plus we had to throw away the undersize catch... I never went back and I am amazed they're still doing it. My father had a trawler in Peru in the 60's, and I remember the bost heeling over severly whilst lifting the catch on board. Today most of the fish is gone and people keep on depleeting the fish banks to fill the money banks. Shamefull!!

If something is covered by statutory law, the relevant authority is acting ON the instruction of Government. That is what is happening when the police officer arrests you when you drink too much at the Federated Farmers meeting, and breach the law of the land driving home. Parliament voted in the law suggested by the Ministers of the Crown, the Ministry of Police instructs the Commissioner of Police on the new law, the Duty sergeants tell the patrol officers to go after the selfish right wingers in their 4-wheel drives. How did you get to be an adult not knowing all of that?.

Why don't you put a bit of good news in as well at times. like on Labour Day, Seafood New Zealand had some more good news about bycatch. Our figures show the jack mackerel 7 fishery (JMA 7) has achieved zero bycatch for the 2023/24 fishing year. Zero - no dolphins, seals, sea lions or seabirds. Or Sealords about how seal deaths on their vessels have dropped by around a third in the last year. This is thanks to a combination of measures their crews have been using in the Cook Strait. The measures included underwater cameras to understand seal behaviour, avoiding fishing when seals are most active, binding the top of the net when deploying the fishing gear and introducing SEDs (Seal Exclusion Devices) to give the seals an escape hatch. The result? 49 seals were captured in the 2023/24 fishing year, down from 68 in 2022/23 and 78 in 2021/22. 37kg of coral in a spot that is not even likely to have anyone go look at it does not sound so sensational against the other 2. MPI & the fishers are trying to reduce negative impact. But just living is not negative impact. We all impact our environment. Let us ALL help to do what we can. People have to eat & live a fair life.

All highly commendable but too little too late. Nz waters are very speedily becoming devoid of life at all levels. I dont think the Hauraki gulf will ever recover from the decades of overfishing and plundering it has been subject to since the second WW. The seabird colonies in the gulf are gone. The skies are empty. The fish are gone. Multiple species. Waters are empty. Even the myriad organisms which break down flesh are so reduced that around Waiheke discarded bait can remain untouched in the water for days. All the activity which brought us to this point continues with a vengance. More people than ever before chasing less fish than ever before. A bit of lip service, teeth gnashing, hand wringing and business as usual. Plunder.plunder,plunder. It is not coming back folks. You dont want it. You want jobs and money.
@cathyclark665225 күн бұрын
@@SeanKearney-tu4by Same on land - I give the birds bread crusts, but they lay untouched as there are so few birds to eat it - 1080 has ruined the bush life! also, the birds tweet in the middle of the night - they are needed to open leaves and flowers with their morning chorus which is mostly non-existent!
