It's nice seeing both teams in the sheds before the start of the match. Two completely different scenes: On one hand, the kiwi, smiling and confident in their abilities, probably forcing a laugh to get rid of the tension and share a moment of communion, renewing the trust they have in each other and in their ability to succeed. On the other hand, the irish were anxious and stern, as if haunted by the pressure and the expectation of an entire nation. This reflected in their respective performance that night.

Can someone please explain to me at 1:54:01 how Matt Todd was offside? He was behind the goal line and didn't move past it till the Irish player pulled the ball from the ruck? Why were Owens and the TMO so sure he was offside? I don't understand the ruling - thanks!
@newremote4 жыл бұрын
I think Owens is an excellent ref, but he got this one wrong, at least as far as his first explanation is concerned. As you say, Todd is fully onside when the Irish #8 picks up the ball, so Owens is wrong to call a penalty try for offside. However, the replay also shows that Todd did not attempt to wrap his arms in the tackle and rolled off the #8 and against the post, effectively blocking it off. Long after the replay is shown you can hear Owens say "no attempt to wrap as well", and I think that's the only legit reason for a penalty try here. I have a suspicion Owens might have realised that as well, which is why he clearly made the late point about not wrapping. This also brings up a gripe I have about this law. If the bottom of the post is considered part of the try line, then a defender must be allowed to stand with a foot against the post and still be onside. But the law doesn't allow that. It doesn't make sense.

For me, Ireland's loss to Japan massively under-mined an already teetering level of confidence; buoyed up momentarily by easy wins over Samoa and Russia respectively. The All Blacks, mindful of previous defeats to the Irish, were fully centred on sending their opponents home, which ultimately is exactly how things panned out.
@BenthiccBiomancer4 жыл бұрын
My read of the situation was that the ABs went into the tournament convinced that they had to win against Ireland. England went into the tournament knowing they had to win against the ABs. SA simply realized that they had to win the final, so they took every match one at a time and were rewarded for it.

In those multi sequence chains particularly when AB’s were defending ab’s defence was phenomenal it was a rarity to see Ireland actually gain ground in their own half and even more so in the opponents, I’d say most of it would probably be the general fitness particularly of the forwards from both teams. The other thing I have consistently seen in world rugby is that everyone seems to look to NZ for the next innovative plays and tactics too often and so by the time teams have created either a counter or some form of Defense towards it NZ has developed something else new, the only time we’ve seen NZ been beaten not just by offender and defence was that match against England

Alright. Big gridiron football fan/former player/father of a player here, never really exposed to rugby. Before anyone reacts to that, I have seen a number of flame wars over who's tougher, rugby players or football players, but I am NOT interested in arguing that with anyone. I have my opinion, you have yours, and the next person swayed by an online discussion will probably be the first. Because rugby fans are so passionate about their sport, I thought I'd watch a game to see what the appeal is, and why the fans think it's more rugged. I assume that these would be good teams to see as an intro to rugby. Even I know about the All Blacks, and Ireland is, well, Ireland. I am writing this comment about 30 minutes into the video, before I have to pause for the night, and I'm confused. Can someone explain to me the purpose of a dozen guys lining up in a horizontal row and then bulling straight into a tackler three yards away? It looks like they're trying to drive the ball, but it seems counterproductive to keep running deliberately into the other players. The other stuff kind of makes sense, but I don't understand that aspect of the game.

I'll try and give a little clarity, Patrick. There are three basic ways to move the ball forward. Through running and passing movements incorporating backs and forwards, through kicking it forward, and through driving it in short bursts or a rolling maul by the forwards. A pick and go is when a forward takes it from the ruck and drives forward into the opposition, often with other forwards binding onto him. It might be repeated a few times, especially if the drive has built up a real momentum. What's called keeping it tight. Often the halfback will pass the ball to a pod of forwards (2 or 3 guys) standing off the ruck who will then drive it forward and set up another ruck. Every ruck forces the defence to adjust and figure out what the attacking side will do next. It's by mixing up these different ways of advancing the ball that a team can draw in the defence and have them guessing as to when you will break away from the tight play to exploit any gaps with passing movements. If the opposition know that you're always going to pass it wide (or keep it tight) then defending is easier. But if you sometimes make ground in short bursts, other times pass the ball wide and run it on your terms, and employ tactical kicks at the right time, then you're controlling play. All that stuff about which is tougher isn't worth bothering with. All football is tough one way or another.

@@newremote Thanks for clarifying. It sounds like what I'm finding confusing is the short burst/rolling maul thing. Both teams are stretched across the field in a line one-player deep. The guy with the ball runs forward into the guy across from him, gets a couple steps and is brought down while somebody rolls over him, then it's passed down the line to repeated. I'm puzzled about the logic behind that, but I am enjoying the game regardless. Thank you also for your comment about the tougher conversation. It's amazing how angry some folks get over this. It's all tough, as you say, and I can appreciate athleticism and talent no matter what form it takes.

@@patrickarmstrong1948: Glad you're enjoying it. I think the logic might become more clear the more you watch. It's not always about avoiding the tackle and in fact the contact is often taken deliberately, as you've noticed. The key thing is that in rugby the play doesn't stop with a tackled ball carrier. The tackle and the ruck that forms over it (called the breakdown) is a platform for what you do next. Setting up a series of breakdowns, called phases, is often just to get the ball to where you want it on the field and keeping opponents committed to defending it in tight, while you get organised to run it wider when it suits. It all about varying the attack and keeping the opposition on the back foot.

@@patrickarmstrong1948 In rugby....you cant throw the ball forward like gridiron. So a player must carry the ball forward then turn and pass the ball back......like a scrimmage but faster. In gridiron they STOP after every play.....rugby is a lot faster.
