Tauranga person here. Kiwi's have a lot of cultural significance, but especially for Maori. Hippos and capybara or a random zoo animal may have some cultural significance at home but I'd suggest not as much as the Kiwi to NZers. The legend of the Kiwi is that Tane Mahuta asked for a bird to become the guardian of the trees, and none would, until the Kiwi stepped forward. His legs were shortened and his wings taken so he'd be close to the trees to guard them. Quite the sacrifice. Kiwi aren't just an animal in the zoo or an exhibit to us. They're Taonga, a living treasure.

I worked and lived in Russell for three months! Long beach was amazing to swim in after a long hot day of work cleaning ! Very fond memories! Glad you were able to enjoy it!!

I moved to NZ 10 years ago from Canada and I still see it as you do - it's so beautiful, especially the coast and the sunrise and sunset. I'm glad you see the beauty too! And the Bay of Islands is my favourite place. Enjoy the rest of your journey and congrats on your wedding!

Hearty breakfast to start the day with. Being an ex serviceman (RAF) kiwi boot polish was a staple, so it was interesting to hear how New Zealanders got their name. Just one part of a very interesting tour, if a little tight on time. The sheep station was fascinating. I had no idea there were so many different breads of sheep. The sheep shearing was amazing. They are so skilful. . Dinner looked great again, followed by a stunning sunset and show. The Bay of Islands wasn’t a bad place to wake to. Russell seemed a good choice. Benji chipped in with lots of facts about the place. Did he live there or in New Zealand in the past. Nice hat by the way. What a fantastic beach and fun in the sea. Lovely watch.
