I might give the soldering gun away to somebody in my town since thats more of an assembly line tool, but the hot air rework station will be in my third floor "lab" eventually. Hot air station is definitely a great tool to have. I've been using my cordless heat gun as a makeshift hot air station. Not very precise but good enough to desolder stuff. This would be a game changer.

My friend has a heat gun that is basically a mild torch, I bet it would work too haha

When I first started EE I got an 858D. It was like half the price then before we got inflation'd. It lasted me for years of use, the only thing that failed was the blower in the handpiece (typical for cheap fans). They are an amazing value. The small nozzle is the only one you need or want, precision is best. For dealing with larger ICs, like QFP/QFN/BGA (or that PLCC? haha ancient!) the trick is to rapidly move the tip along the sides in a circular motion. You don't want to point it horizontally, just maybe at a slight angle from vertical at most. The temperature you need depends on the type of solder and the size of ground planes on the board. Leaded solder, typically 350-380c. Leadfree solder 400+c. PCBs from the 1990s or later are very forgiving so don't worry too much, you will get a feel for what works. Be careful with 1980s PCBs, the pads are fragile. And flux also helps desoldering, not just soldering. I recommend you try ChipQuik no-clean water-washable flux. It is the best stuff ever. It is acetic acid based with minimal rosin (still try not to breathe too much of it). But, you can just rinse off boards with warm water and a brush in the sink, blow them off with air, and set them out to dry and there will be no residue. And you can just wipe down your bench and hands with a wet cloth. With traditional flux everything everywhere gets sticky and you can never get rid of it.

That reminded me I forgot to put 858D in the title. And thanks for the tips. I was only using plumbing flux because I was next to the workshop and didn't care so much haha

That’s a great heatsink upgrade. Once you add a fan you’ll def relieve more of the heat.

I figure a laptop fan might be perfect for this!

I've had a 858D for the past year or so. Different brand, they're pretty much all the same though. Works fine for the most part. For small stuff. When you try bigger BGA packages though it wont touch them. Like the 2mm squared 820-3435 SMC I need to remove and replace on a macbook logic board. Idk if I'd recommend the 858D considering for about $100 more you can get a far superior station, at least from one site. I just got the Atten ST-862D for $155. Looking forward to using it and learning BGA re-balling etc. If you plan to only be working on small stuff, sure. Otherwise go with the better one from the start. Else you're wasting $40 if you buy one. Free though is a nice little score. Also I did successfully remove a xbox series s HDMI port with mine. Just tin with low melt first and make sure it mixes in. Had to use hot air with my iron for the anchor legs. Put a bunch on the data pins as well and heated from the back side. Port basically fell right out.

Glowing red hot 😮‍💨 I think there could be a fault! And thanks for the look inside the hot-air controller. I agree, the power transistors need a heat-sink. At over 100°C, for extended periods, the transistors are lilly to have a short service life. 😕

I asked them and they say it's ok, and I mean it did work ok lol I wouldn't make it my main soldering iron though.

That’s a nice workshop and the solder gun mechanism seems pretty handy. Rinoa ,for the friction speaker connector, have you tried pushing down on the plastic piece to release tension. It appears the plastic piece you originally removed can travel up and down making installation a lot easier? ✌️

I never seen a solder gun that feeds the solder! I only have 60/40 lead solder, still. I ventilate ever time I solder.
