EWR is in fact closer to Manhattan than JFK is. But it's still New Jersey, and has never been a New York airport in anybody's mind. Just a conveniently close NJ airport. Most people aiming for Manhattan dislike using EWR anyway, even foreigners, it's just not the same feeling when you land in JFK.

Before La Guadia was built if you bought a ticket to NYC the plane would land at Newark.It was NYC's only airport! It was a NY airport in EVERYBODY's mind! Mayor La Guadia bought a ticket to NYC and when the plane landed at Newark he refused to get off. He said his ticket says NYC and he will not get off until it lands there,.After a big hullalbalu they took off again and landed at Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn. I have seen this when was returning from Athens to the US and the flight was direct Athens to EWR. The displays at the gate read “New York- Newark Airport”. It was funny to hear New Yorkers asking the Emirates agent why the sign says New York if the airport is in New Jersey. Newark Liberty is in Newark, New Jersey BUT it's in the New York metropolitan area and the airspace is part of the "New York Class B" status. But here's why this change matters. If someone were to book a flight to/from New York, they would have the options of LaGuardia; JFK and Newark airports because it's part of the Greater New York area, but it also means that flights rescheduled or redirected can be rotated to either three airports without any "extra fees" if done so. Because of this change to make Newark Liberty "independent," airlines can now classify EWR as a "distant" hub (similar status as flying to a rural Vermont) and charge you more for gate fees. Leaving the grouping as a "New York -based" airport now treats EWR (Newark Liberty) as no longer part of NYC. That means: You would be charged higher fees if your flight is redirected from either JFK or LGA, which tends to happen often because of overcrowding on those runways... and vice versa for JFK or LGA inbound/outbound flights
@MarloSoBalJr2 жыл бұрын
@@toniamrod Newark is still part of the Greater New York area and the airspace; no matter status of Newark Liberty, is all transmitted out of New York. @@frenchchicken2799 I lived in Manhattan for 15 years. You’re getting all confused. I was talking about the airlines charging people who might need to change airports. The day we were delayed coming back from Sweden had to do with flights coming in. By the time we landed, the storm had stopped, but there was a backlog of smaller commuter type flights that had been held up. As a result, our connecting plane was late to take us to our next stop. We asked Delta to put us on the United nonstop back home to San Francisco and did it for no extra fee. It could well have required moving to a different airport to accomplish the same thing. That’s my point. As of now, EWR had been considered the same destination as New York, and airlines would honor tickets between airports. This move was done so they don’t have to do that. I have seen many inexpensive tickets from San Francisco to exotic places like Dubai, where you have to switch from EWR to JFK to a code share partner airline to go on to your next stop. This would eliminate such “deals” and thus is ripping off consumers. That’s my point. And by the way, there are indeed times where one airport will shut down and another in the same vicinity remains open. I know people who got stranded because San Francisco was closed, and it turned out Oakland was open, so they took different flights. That’s because they’re in the same area. I’ve also booked one way tickets so I can leave from a different airport and come back to another. I do it a lot. I also fly to Cleveland to visit my dad and fly home from Pittsburgh. If all depends on the fare and flight times.

I got a cheap ticket even though my destination was Baltimore. It’s easy to get via mass transit between the cities. I saw that there was an earlier flight going to Baltimore and the kind ground staff let me get on the flight, because they are considered in the same area. very true, but i rather pay more than enter the dumpster fire that is EWR.
@TheTraveler9762 жыл бұрын
It’s about time they made the change. I always wondered why EWR was classified as a NYC airport when it’s actually not in NYC. New Jersey & New York are two different states. It’ll be my first time flying out of EWR next month for a trip.
@kevinkibble8342 Жыл бұрын
Probably because it's pretty much next to Manhattan and people use it for NYC. It's like how Gatwick, Stansted and Luton aren't actually in London but they serve the city.

Ha.. so I finally realized why my old job used to pick up money from JFK, LGA, and all the way out in Newark. Cash flow really is interesting
@babukitty22 жыл бұрын
Ha. Who cares? Everyone commenting on their fave airport like a sports team. Ewr is closer to Manhattan and the njt makes it an easy commute into the city. I live in Seattle and will continue flying into Newark.

People are so hung up on government lines to look at actual travel trends. Including each state's power hungry politicians preventing a unified regional rail. Like we saw during World Trade Center reconstruction where they refused to send the merge the PATH and 6 train.
@MarloSoBalJr2 жыл бұрын
Except, you'll be charged more on gate fees. Guaranteed the next time you fly, the rates gonna increase now Newark would be treated as a "distant" instead of part of a collective group

The spirit of Mayor La Guardia will be SERIOUSLY PLEASED 😁😁😁 with the change.... Fun Fact: EWR originally opened in 1928. In the '30s Fiorenzo La Guardia, then mayor of NYC, was pissed off after a flight he had just landed from Chicago (with 1-2 stops in between) with the mention he was landing in NYC. After landing he started the procedures to have their own airport in NYC, which ultimately wound up in Northern Queens. For those efforts the airport was named after him and LGA was born.

Yup. Jersey gains the "independent" status BUT now has the to pay higher fees for being "independent" from New York Welcome to Capitalism 🤷
@jvillalaz442 жыл бұрын
Why would this even be considered a news story?
@MarloSoBalJr2 жыл бұрын
Because, if you're a flyer this would effect how much you pay at gate for your tickets. It may not effect you directly but it will if you realize the fees to fly from EWR are more expensive now than they were before this change

But I don't understand, Newark international Airport was a new jersey Airport why they wanna change it now?
@ROMEROME19902 жыл бұрын
Wait, I’m confused, I thought that is Newark Liberty part of New Jersey? As in Newark, New Jersey? 🤷🏾♂️
@MarloSoBalJr2 жыл бұрын
That means: You would be charged higher fees if your flight is redirected from either JFK or LGA, which tends to happen often because of overcrowding on those runways... and vice versa for JFK or LGA inbound/outbound flights Does this help a little to help understand why this nonsense

EWR is part of the New York Class B airspace. Does this mean EWR airspace will be categorized as its own independent Class Bravo airspace, or will it still be part of the NY Class Bravo Airspace? Whatever the answer, it's still under the vicinity zone of the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZNY ARTCC)!
@lucasdiaz99662 жыл бұрын
Nah, the only thing that’s changing is for the airlines and how they price there models. EWR will still be under the same airspace as congestion isn’t changing at all.
@MarloSoBalJr2 жыл бұрын
EWR is far too close to NYC to not be part of New York's airspace. Like the comment before me stated, this is gonna affect misinformed passengers in regards to gate fees because now EWR's status is gonna be downgrade to a "distant" air hub (similar to you flying to Wyoming) and if flights are redirected from JFK and/or LGA to EWR or vise versa, the airlines could charge you even more for flying into a "new" jurisdiction no related to New York, even though you're in the metroplex's jurisdiction
@mr.g35882 жыл бұрын
New Jersey is the 11th most populated state in the country, EWR should be identified as New Jersey. Hopefully people traveling into nyc will now use Jfk or lga, and lessen congestion at Ewr for New Jersey residents.

Even though Some airlines may not be going there anymore due to it not being a new york airport. this airport has been built in new jersey, not new york. so I'm pretty happy. the guy at 0:30 was right too! I was born and raised in new jersey and still live there. This airport is in Newark. if it were to be a new york airport then build it in new york. but it was built in the city of Newark, NJ so it is a New Jersey Airport. No one should call it a new york airport. This is new jersey airport! Overall Newark has been busy over the years. Most flights left going towards, Pennsylvania not New york. Also, New York already has 2 airports so who cares if it loses one not even in its own state. As an aviation nerd. On the flight radar most flight leave runways and go left or right depending on the direction they are in. They won't go towards the city of new york, Maybe the state.
