Despite the easy racism of dated reputations many rusted out old big cities in the Northeast and Midwest like Newark, Buffalo, Cleveland, Milwaukee and even Detroit have mostly bottomed out in recent years and are slowly stabilizing, revitalizing and even starting to grow again. Newark has a lot of great old buildings and infrastructure, is close to New York while being far cheaper and has a fair amount of culture and attractions of its own. It'll always be overshadowed by the Big Apple but over time it will continue to clean up and evolve. Thirty years ago no one ever thought Brooklyn, Hoboken or Jersey City would ever come back either.

I was born and raised in Newark. There is some place you can go to and can’t go to. Have to watch surround you while walking or driving around. I can’t walk around got fancy or expensive stuff on me otherwise can get rob easily . I usually have no makeup on and my phone in my pocket . Wearing non name brand outfit . Carry little cash with me. Walk with a friend at night

kingpierre.amg my car broke down about 10 MILES from the Newark Airport and the tow driver said don't stop at red lights keep going floor it lol. I drove through newark around 2am didn't seem bad but like you said it helps to know the areas.
