Hey plant people! Welcome to this houseplant vlog & Newbie Winter Houseplant Setup! I am no houseplant expert and am learning as I go, so don't be too hard on me - I'd love for anyone to share their constructive criticism in the comments!
In this houseplant vlog, we are bringing in houseplants for the winter, setting up a DIY humidity tray, repotting houseplants, doing some general winter houseplant care, and I'm sharing a little houseplant tour of my new setup!
First, we bring and repot a few different summer annuals that I want to overwinter and keep as houseplants. Then we repot all my other regular house plants in fresh new soil. We also make a DIY humidity tray together, which was very budget friendly with a thrifted container that I spray painted black and filled with marble chip stones I already had. However, we do end up needing to troubleshoot its' waterproofing situation, because I didn't think about that scenario initially.
A few weeks after bringing everything indoors before freezing temps arrive, I check in again with how everything is holding up and troubleshoot some issues, including dryness. Then we do some winter houseplant maintenance like repotting into larger pots, refreshing soil, soaking / watering, deadheading, etc. I also add a humidifier to one of my houseplant tables in hopes that it helps them keep from drying out and getting crispy.
I end the video with a tour of my whole Newbie houseplant setup! Some of the plants included in this video are elephant ear caladium, birds of paradise, Wicked Witch Coleus, Cyclamen, Bitterroot, Oxalis, poinsettia, Kalanchoe, and huechera.

This is killing me, what have you done to your poor calathea? They like to be constantly moist, do not use tap water, use filtered or rain water or at least let the water sit 24 to 48 hours before using to let the fluoride and clorine evaporate. Otherwise you get brown tips on all your leaves and the plant stuggles. They're beautiful plants. Your grow lights are supposed to be used on a schedule like the sun, not when you feel like it because that confuses the plants, they don't know what time of year it is. The whole point of the grow lights is to mimic their best growing time ( however many hours of light the plant needs every day) Glad to see you got pots with drainage holes. Some of those did not need to be repotted, too big a pot will cause roots to rot. Your oxalis, some go dormant in the winter depending on your light and watering schedule. This is another thirsty plant, did you know if you cut a couple of leaves and put them in water they will root, takes awhile but its pretty cool. Don't repot in the sink, if you knock that pot over you will block your sink and get a lovely plumbing bill unless you can remove the pipes yourself and run the fish ( years ago, I knocked a pot over on my bathroom vanity and all the earth ended up in my sink ).

Daaaaamn you make me feel so ashamed 😭 but I appreciate all this feedback and constructive criticism always!! To be fair, that calthea is in better shape now than when I adopted it - i saved it from the trash lol. I also do turn the lights on the same time as daylight? So definitely not on in the dark. Like if it’s cloudy I turn them on, but I also go with the sun outside if that makes sense? Is this still incorrect? I do appreciate the info :) 💕

@@MissAnnieB I didn't mean to be negative😞, Calatheas are my new love. I think for the grow lights it depends on where the plant's native country is, and some need 18 hours of light , that's why people have them on timers, so it's exactly the same every day. I haven't bought any yet, I almost fainted when I saw the price on some of them and my plants all need different amounts of light so they'll have to make due with the windows.😂
