Amen brother! That's why us old school mechanics charge what we do on certain vehicles. Its labor intensive! I feel your pain as I work on a lot of old Cadillac's! Quadrajet carbs are a bit more complicated.... But they work well when adjusted properly, I prefer them over holly and edelbrock any day. Side note: run your caddy on premium fuel at a base setting of 8° timing and she will come to life. Great video. And good luck.

If you think base timing is the most important aspect of ignition timing I would never let you touch my car! Want to understand ignition timing and how to tune it then buy the book Performance Ignitions by Dr Christopher Jacobs. 👍

@@trailerparkcryptoking5213 I never said base timing is the most important! But it's pretty close... And don't worry, I will never work on your car. Hope you enjoyed that book you got for Christmas! Keep reading those articles and I'll keep doing real engine work. Have blessed weekend and don't forget your lotion when your done being a keyboard warrior.

@@jayh9635 my bad! You only mentioned “base” timing and not the importance of total timing and how to determine the best total timing for any individual engine plus how to determine what rpm to have mechanical timing “all in” by, a timing “curve” if you will. I’m certain you’re an awesome old school mechanic as you implied, it’s just that partial information can mislead the unknowing. As far as keyboard warrior, I was tuning two stroke dirt bikes at twelve years old, building V-8’s at 14 and drag racing an 11 second car at 16 years old and winning races! I know a thing or three about tuning.... Sorry if I made you feel insecure....

I am here, because my buddy asked me to figure out how to tune his coupe deville carb since his runs rich as heck and does 7-8mpg. And honestly, im not up for that task, like you said 100bucks per hour - yeah he gotta get that done by Bosch (we're from germany) or who-ever dials in Cadillac over here. So this said, i salute your commitment ✌ rock on!

Parking brake release uses vacuum; hydraulic would be even more complex. Thank you for your thoroughness.

its so nice though, I love getting in my car and shifting in gear and hearing the parking brake automatically kick off.

Looks like you are being very thorough with your timing adjustments. Using the factory service manual is the best way obviously. The settings you mention as being insane were typical for the day. The late 60s and early 70s were a tough time for manufacturers. There were no catalytic converters until 75 so GM had to come up with inventive ways to to minimize emissions by limiting ignition timing advance and keeping the idle mixture as lean as possible. All this added up to somewhat complicated adjustment procedures as you have found out. In many cases the manual instructs you to adjust the timing and mixture while the transmission is in "drive". I usually scotch all four wheels for this procedure, in addition to keeping the E brake on. All of these procedures change from year to year as technology changed.

Initial timing don’t mean jack squat as long as the car will start! Disconnect that vacuum advance hose and plug it on the carb side. Check your total timing and then bump it up two degrees and take test drive where you can put the engine under a load in drive, preferably up a nice hill, floor it in drive and listen for ping (detonation). If you hear no ping then bump timing up two more degrees and do the same test drive. Continue to bump up your timing until you hear ping, then, retard your timing three degrees and lock down the distributor. Take another test drive to ensure you have no ping. Now at home with timing light attached rev your engine and determine at what RPM that mechanical advance is all in. If it’s not all in by 2500 rpm then replace one of your mech advance springs with a weaker one (you can by a recurve kit that has them). Reconnect your vacuum hose and take another test drive under load, if no ping your all good. If it pings with vacuum advance then buy an adjustable vacuum advance canister and install it and adjust on it until the ping goes away. It’s work but pays dividends and your engine is in excellent tune and will be very happy and run very well. Ignition timing from the factory is shit, because they have to set it super conservative so it doesn’t detonate on the worst gas in the world and under the harshest climate/environment in the world! Lots of room for improvement! 👌

Does this still apply to an edelbrock carb? Purchased my caddy with the edelbrock on it.

I wonder if disconnecting the vacuum line for the parking brake is only necessary if one person is tuning the carburetor being that the parking brake kicks off when the car is in drive and the settings have to be set while in drive so naturally the parking brake has to be engaged as to not get ran over.

Many places on the internet, just do a search, but the cheapest is to buy the CD- ROM if you still have a computer that can read CD’s. Then you can print needed pages from there....

How much would you charge me to do this to my 1970 Cadillac Sedan Deville? Where are you located?

You can lose the screw to the vaccum can , the can itself doesent miraculously produce vaccum , when you disconected it at the carb its was done for good 👍 vid
