The tipped that I like/found the best was that you were talking about how baby's would drop their deep sleepy face when they were hungry. Also when you put their hand down they would put it back up because they were still hungry

Thank you so much. The video was really helpful. But, unfortunately most of the time I am still confused if my 3 months baby's really hungry or not (this issue is exist from his birth upwards). I'm trying to look for his hunger cues but he doesn't show any signs except crying. And sometimes even after breastfeeding for a long time like 30 min, he still sticks out his tongue and licks his lips and sometimes he comes off the nipple and falls asleep after feeding and when I try to burp him on my shoulder, he wakes up again and turns his head side to side and buries his face on my chest.. so I wonder why he does that. I do breastfeed him every 2 hours and he's feeding only for a 5 or 10 min actively but after that he takes long breaks and when I'm trying to take him off, he starts to suck for a 2 or 3 seconds and then stops. And he wakes up again and he doesn't look satisfied at all.

Hi Kay, I'll try to get one up soon for sure. It can take a bit of time and patience to wean a baby from a nipple shield, and you may want to get some help from working one on one with a lactation consultant, but hopefully once I get the video up, you find it helpful. Have a beautiful night mama!

Until what age do you recommend on demand feeding? Do you ever recommend stretching out the time between feeds, if so, when?

Thank you for these great tips! My newborn has been getting better at latching each feed. I have been feeding her at the breast and then offering pumped milk in a bottle using the paced method. Sometimes she refuses the bottle and sometimes she finishes it. I was doing this because I was concerned that she wasn’t taking enough from my breast. Also, there has been a couple times where she slept about three hours so I woke her up to feed but she didn’t show much interest. She will latch and drink for just a few minutes and then seem full and doze off. Should I be concerned? Is this normal? Also, how long should I continue doing the paced bottlefeeding?

This sounds like you are doing everything right. If she is refusing the bottle after the breast, or seems satiated and is no longer showing hunger cues, she probably doesn't need the bottle after the feed. Believe in your body's ability to provided for your baby, feed her on demand when you are seeing hunger cues (about 8-12 times per day) and ask your pediatrician for guidance on when it is ok to do longer stretches between occasional feedings if baby is asleep (this will be based on her age and current weight gain.) Congratulations mama!

How can you tell the difference between hunger and self soothing? My almost two month old has started putting her hands in her mouth very often even right after feeds when she seems full. It makes it hard to tell later on if she’s hungry or if something else is going on.

It can be tricky to tell the difference, but if you know your baby just ate and seems satisfied, sucking on her hands could be self soothing. Try to look at the complete picture, if she is showing other hunger cues such as sucking on her hand and is fussy, and moving her head side to side....ect you may want to offer her more to eat.

Thank you so much. Video is so helpful. My baby some times sleep for 4-5 hours without feeding. She feeds longer for some time and sometimes just for 5-10 mins. Always after feeding she sleeps on my arms. Should I worry about her feeding pattern. In india people specially the elder one's of the family say let the baby cry for longer it improves their hunger and clears the throat and doesn't let mother feed till the baby cries.

Hi and thank you for your comment. It is so true that sometimes what elder generations say in a family and cultural factors can have a big impact on how we feed our babies. Crying can be a late sign of hunger and your baby will likely eat better if you feed them when you see some of the early hunger cues I talked about in the video. On demand feeding based on baby's hunger cues is what is recommended. You may also find my video on "Is my baby getting enough milk" helpful. Thank you for being here and for contributing.

I dont understand how to pick up on hunger cues when he's napping? I'm not constantly watching him. I go get him when he wakes up crying and then feed him. It's not a great experience trying to feed him once he's crying but again, how can I feed him before he cries when he's sleeping all the time?

Hi mam, I really need help my baby don't breastfeed while awake every time when he's hungry I have to make him asleep n feed. He feeds ok cause getting more than 6 wet diapers and 3 soiled diapers. But I really want him to feed fully awake. Kindly help

Hi! Without being able to have all the background information it is hard to say why your baby may be preferring sleepier feeds, but as long as your baby feeds enough times per day, has good output, and good weight progression, it sounds like you are doing a great job!
