This Aquarium Modular Building blew me away!

Loved your review! This was one of the first non-Lego kits I bought and really enjoyed building it, as you said. I was really impressed with General Jims and want to give them a shout out. Not in this kit, but another one of theirs, I was confused by the differenct between the color of the pieces in the instructions and the ones I had. When I contacted GJim's and told them I was a new builder, they explained about color differences. When I said the colors were (I thought) radically different, they sent me replacement pieces. To my chagrin, the pieces were the same color. When I offered to send the pieces back, they said to keep them and enjoy! (Also, I love their business card which came in the replacement pieces that says, "No builder left behind.") All that said, thank you for the review and I can't wait to see what else you enjoy! I'm now a subscriber.

Just wanted to say that this video encouraged me to buy this set. I heavily modified it (inside and out), so it's now about 70% GJ and 30% LEGO, and boy am I happy with the results. I made my own custom sticker elements to use on the curved corner windows to continue the black/white pattern around the building on floors 2 and 3. It's one of the coolest attractions in my city now!

Nice review, thank you for doing it. only question I have is, was it missing any parts? Off brand lego is notorious for missing parts, as i'm sure you're well aware. Igot my son the Ice Cream Parlor from General Jims two years ago, and he loved it, looks great and a fun build. it was missing several parts, and I contacted them about it, they responded that it was very uncommon for a set to be missing that many parts but they would send them to us. Not only did they send them to us, they sent an entire kit and told us to take what we needed to complete ours and send the rest back, they also included the return shipping label. General Jims is a stand up company and they went above and beyond making things right for us.

We always try to make sure all parts are there. But, in the rare case any are missing, we have a “No Builder Left Behind” guarantee. If anything is missing we ship replacement parts same day we are notified. Or a new set!

I'm not a buyer of modular buildings but this does look a pretty good set for those that do. Personally I'd love the build steps to include more pieces like this. I find Lego instruction build steps are extremely dumbed down these days, with some steps including only one part, seriously how dumb do Lego think people are? The Lego build steps when I was a kid had way more parts per step and I managed just fine, so I'm sure kids these days would cope too. I also like the greyed out section once complete, I find this quite helpful. Great review! Please keep these non Lego reviews coming, alternative brands are starting to meet the quality of Lego, in my opinion, so it is great to see someone reviewing these sets.

The aquarium looks good. I’ve seen that car wash music store on the Lego ideas submission from 2018. I wonder if they bought the designs from the original creator.

I hadn't seen that one! But I've now found the listing, you're right on. It's possible they bought the design, but also very common for LEGO Ideas projects to be stolen and used by Chinese third-party companies. From the research I did for a recent video, I'm guessing that if the design was stolen by the manufacturer General Jim's may not even know about it. I wish it was more common for third-party manufacturers to actually license the design from the creator instead of ripping it off.

So I figured you might want to know so you can at least decide if it’s one you still want to move forward with. I always feel bad for content creators who make a video apologizing for unknowing promote a stolen build.

Yes, most of them are very compatible with LEGO modulars. I can't vouch for everything on the site, but usually it's just plug and play with LEGO buildings too. I will be doing another city update soon!

@@NewBrickerton no worries sometime you have to dig realy deep. btw. the car wash is an ideas by Bricky_Brick, the botanic garden you can find the instructions on rebrickable by berthil for free since he made a licence deal with mould king it was one of my most favorite sets to build last year.

I added the MILS base, that is one thing I also forgot to mention. The build comes with a 32x32 tan baseplate but not the MILS setup. If you like the look it's worth it for the price! Thanks for watching Grel

Who hasn't heard of an "Ocean Museum?" How do these bricks compare in clutch power to Lego? Do they clutch well with one another? Do they clutch well with Lego?

Good question, I should've talked about that. On a scale of 0 to 10 where LEGO would be a 10, I'd rate their brick quality about a 7! They clutch fairly well amongst themselves and with LEGO, better than other third party brands I have tried.

But most of the buildings are also sold by other companies (mould king, Mork) and are from famous designers. E. G the ohsojang designs... I don't see his name at any of his buildings at general Jim.....

Unfortunately a lot of these sets are stolen rebrickable designs. Not saying this specifically is one, but I have seen it on quite a few sites under numerous names. URGE makes the big 1.5 baseplate hospital as well. That was a Chinese design that was very poorly executed and much like this set has some MAJOR structural stability issues. Never mind the gaping hole in the facade clearly visible in the box art 😂 Anything with URGE on it MAY give you the urge to knock it off the table while building! Good thing they are cheap and fully compatible with Lego as you will need quite a few lego pieces to get the thing built properly!
