I think that Lego can justify the premium price due to the effort in designing the builds and various licensing fees. But if you're building a retired set, where Lego won't get any of the resale money, it makes sense to use 3rd party bricks.

I don't know. The cost of this webrick set was roughly comparable to the cost of the set when it came out BUT without the mini-figs, printed pieces, initial promotional costs (box art, ads, etc) and design costs for creating the build. So it seems like lego might be competitive already given all the hidden costs. But if you just want bricks and free lego instructions, then webrick is great.

I’m not coming at this from a “purist” angle, and I’m not even an aficionado by any means, but I think it’s important folks are aware that a huge contributor to the cost of Lego brand sets has to do with paying Lego employees-including the amazing engineers and designers that spend months creating these builds before they’re ever even brought to market or make a profit. Yes, Lego has made their instructions and parts lists available online, so yes, you can def rip them and then source the bricks from somewhere else. But just know that you’re not contributing to the source that invested in all that time and talent to produce those designs-which are the best in the world for a reason. I’m honestly not arguing either way, and I think it’s fine to source some bulk quantity pieces elsewhere if you’re building major MOCs and need to save some cash-I don’t think the number of folks doing this will make a huge dent in Lego’s sustainability. But it’s just a good awareness to keep in mind, and also can contribute to Lego prices going up. If everyone did this, it would only result in a race to the bottom where cheap is all that matters, and Lego couldn’t afford to pay for the talent that gets us these designs. Lego isn’t price-gouging or trying to rip off their customers. Lego is the company that is investing in all the people and their talent and skill. And they pay a competitive living wage to all their employees. That investment in people increases the price per brick vs a knock-off company that only snags their final work, and then manufactures a knock-off end-product material to copy it. Nothing is contributed to paying for what it took to get there. Just something good to be aware-the cost for Lego isn’t about the manufacturing costs alone, like it is for the copycats. But I appreciate this vid talking about the differences and similarities in the final end product. This is just something for people to keep in mind. Has nothing to do with being a purist or a brand fan; I only own a few Lego sets myself. But I do care about quality development and companies that pay their workers. And I think Lego build designs are incomparable and unmatched by any other, and I’m happy to pay for that.

While I have not ventured outside the official Lego brand products, I don’t begrudge anyone who does, as there is a place for everyone to enjoy it how they see fit. In some ways I admire people bold enough to be open minded and trying something different. I would be curious how the webrick version you built would compare to sourcing Lego brick on a site like bricklink while omitting the same expensive pieces.

I was also trying to figure this out just now. I downloaded the parts list from Rebrickable for the Brick Bank. I uploaded that list to WeBrick. Then I exported the xml for the missing and out of stock parts. However, when I tried to import the xml to Bricklink it failed and didn't find any of the missing parts. So I don't know what's going on. It would suck to have to try and find all the missing parts individually, but it might be worth it to save the $$.

I've been building lego as an adult since the first modulars came out. But these days I've watched the prices just go crazy. Makes me sad its becoming out of reach for many at a time when we need hobbies. I love the collection I have but, like you, I am not ashamed to add in unique alt brands. I think lego as a brand is missing a lot of opportunities. Used to be a purist but life changes ,and income decline opened up my eyes to alts. I think its great if people can afford all real lego but they have to realise not everyone can. Alt brands give every socio-economic group the chance to enjoy the hobby. It's all about creativity. I hope you video goes far and wide to help people.

There are 3,800 unique lego bricks. The factory couldn't realistically print all unique pieces from every retired set they've put out in the past 70+ years. The fact is that once lego retires a set, those unique prints just skyrocket because lego has no reason to continue to print the pieces. Lego is releasing 150+ new sets, just in January 2024. Lego didn't get where it is today by continuing to make wooden toys. They are constantly evolving & innovating.

@@LordDavid04 I'm sure that no one who is using off-brand parts would take them to a LEGO convention 😁 It's just for fun if you want the same buildings for less money!

How do you remove the parts you dont want to order? lets say you already have a good chunk of the pieces and want to remove them from the check out, i cant find the option

A couple questions - what is the shipping time to get the parts from China? And, could you explain how to use the exported out of stock parts list on brick link? The XML file does not seem to be compatible there, and you didn't really show that part of the process. Would appreciate it! Thanks!

It's generally a couple of weeks from China. WeBrick picks and ships usually in 3-5 days, depending on the volume of pieces you order. Then it goes to the China shipper for a couple of days. A day through China customs, and then the ride across the pond - sometimes there's a delay before it actually gets transported. Then it goes through US customs - usually another day - and gets handed off to the US shipper - maybe another day delay here, and they usually take about 3 days to get it to you. I found WeBrick's order tracking to be very detailed and easy to follow. The file he exported out of ReBrickable was a ReBrickable .CSV file, so it's not directly compatible to BrickLink. There's also a BrickLink .XML option that will produce the file you're needing. The CSV is easier to edit if you're savvy and want to make color changes or part substitutions before uploading. ReBrickable is a good interchange place between formats because they support so many. So you can take files from anywhere and import them to a list there, and then export them into whichever format you need.

I found a AliExpress a very good place to get my knock off Legos. I’ve gotten four of the street view buildings and a garden building there’s no backs on them but that’s OK as you were saying in the other video you can always put the backside on. With extra pieces. Or you 13:57 could put the buildings back to back so you don’t have to see inside but that’s the fun with going and playing with the Legos inside.move them around. I just spent $102 today with shipping included. By buying the Cuba church and a treehouse four road pieces. some railroad track and a cute little florist shop so three main buildings and some odds and ends for $102 that’s pretty darn good.

Yes, aliexpress is a great place to get off-brand modulars, then you can use WeBrick if you ever want to build MOCs or custom builds.

Great video I recently sourced out parts for both the brickbank and detectives office since I had about 80 percent of the Lego parts for both I chose to get the rest in Lego from bricklink. But I might try some of the older modulars from we brick in the future. Thanks

Some of the instructions are missing on the Lego website, like old technic, town, and minor updates
@NewBrickerton Жыл бұрын
Yeah, after I recorded this I noticed that they didn't have many old sets. It seems that they go back until about 2000 or so with at least the most popular ones. I'm sure you can find those missing instructions online somewhere it just may take some digging!

If a set I want is still in production, I’ll buy from LEGO. If it’s disco’d and still available at a reasonable price, I’ll Bricklink it as a set. I bought the first 4-5 modulars while they were new…then slept few a couple I really want (Bank and Diner). I’m going to check out the difference between part sourcing off of Bricklink and WE Brick. We’ll see where it goes!

Maybe Lego could do a remix-version of the old sets(if they ever run out of ideas...), so new and old builders get something new but also familiar. Or just introduce the old sets again to the market. I mean they would definitely get off the shelves fast.

Hey there, this is a great way to build retired modulars and Id love to do it, but i am on a "fixed" income and cant afford $150-$200 in one lump sum. I'm wondering, can you make a video of "How to source from webrick in multiple orders" (for modulars). Or if you can tell me how.... Thanks.....

I think buying alternative basic Lego pieces is great and personally I would still get the special pieces, I believe they are what make the set stand out than other sets, but I will definitely use webrick for the basic/unprinted parts
