I think that Lego can justify the premium price due to the effort in designing the builds and various licensing fees. But if you're building a retired set, where Lego won't get any of the resale money, it makes sense to use 3rd party bricks.

I don't know. The cost of this webrick set was roughly comparable to the cost of the set when it came out BUT without the mini-figs, printed pieces, initial promotional costs (box art, ads, etc) and design costs for creating the build. So it seems like lego might be competitive already given all the hidden costs. But if you just want bricks and free lego instructions, then webrick is great.

I’m not coming at this from a “purist” angle, and I’m not even an aficionado by any means, but I think it’s important folks are aware that a huge contributor to the cost of Lego brand sets has to do with paying Lego employees-including the amazing engineers and designers that spend months creating these builds before they’re ever even brought to market or make a profit. Yes, Lego has made their instructions and parts lists available online, so yes, you can def rip them and then source the bricks from somewhere else. But just know that you’re not contributing to the source that invested in all that time and talent to produce those designs-which are the best in the world for a reason. I’m honestly not arguing either way, and I think it’s fine to source some bulk quantity pieces elsewhere if you’re building major MOCs and need to save some cash-I don’t think the number of folks doing this will make a huge dent in Lego’s sustainability. But it’s just a good awareness to keep in mind, and also can contribute to Lego prices going up. If everyone did this, it would only result in a race to the bottom where cheap is all that matters, and Lego couldn’t afford to pay for the talent that gets us these designs. Lego isn’t price-gouging or trying to rip off their customers. Lego is the company that is investing in all the people and their talent and skill. And they pay a competitive living wage to all their employees. That investment in people increases the price per brick vs a knock-off company that only snags their final work, and then manufactures a knock-off end-product material to copy it. Nothing is contributed to paying for what it took to get there. Just something good to be aware-the cost for Lego isn’t about the manufacturing costs alone, like it is for the copycats. But I appreciate this vid talking about the differences and similarities in the final end product. This is just something for people to keep in mind. Has nothing to do with being a purist or a brand fan; I only own a few Lego sets myself. But I do care about quality development and companies that pay their workers. And I think Lego build designs are incomparable and unmatched by any other, and I’m happy to pay for that.

Great work! I am a purist when it comes to Lego, but my method for "scratch building" sets is to take my inventory lists and go pick bricks out of the bulk at my local Bricks & Minifigs store. If I keep running into a rare part that is statistically not going to show up in the bulk pile I order off of Bricklink.

So glad I stumbled across this video. I have bought a lot of bulk to use for ball contraptions or finishing my son’s sets that he left when he moved out. If I plan to sell something, I would use 100% lego but for ball contraptions I could use anything! I have pulled out a lot of mega block and other brands in the past due color or plastic issues but sounds like this is a perfect replacement! Great video!

I love how candid you are about using alternative bricks. For so long it’s seemed like every lego fan/content creator has been so hush hush about even the possibility of going that route. I’ve been buying bootlego for years at this point and have yet to have any issues and it’s nice to see someone going out there publicly and validating that, yes, this is a thing, and yes, it’s cost effective. LEGO isn’t owed anything from us. If they want to make the prices too high, you’re allowed to take your business elsewhere.

I'm going to order some to check the quality, the part is dark red 1x2 plate with 2 fingers on end (it's a hinge piece). I need about 20 of them and there are zero vendors that have that many. Very interesting video and I appreciate the alternative point of view about using non Lego products as it’s different from the majority of the Lego community. While I have not ventured outside the official Lego brand products, I don’t begrudge anyone who does, as there is a place for everyone to enjoy it how they see fit. In some ways I admire people bold enough to be open minded and trying something different. I would be curious how the webrick version you built would compare to sourcing Lego brick on a site like bricklink while omitting the same expensive pieces.

I love this idea, and I’m definitely gonna use it this summer when I want some new sets; I had a play around with the websites and the palace cinema came out to be half the price if not less than what eBay was selling for! But then I also did it with the boutique hotel and some were cheaper and some were only slightly more expensive, yet again, they would all be second hand ones and this way would be brand new ones, and I guess the palace cinema is a much older set and therefore more expensive and has a higher want, interesting to see how the prices vary!

The fact is that once lego retires a set, those unique prints just skyrocket because lego has no reason to continue to print the pieces. Lego is releasing 150+ new sets, just in January 2024. Lego didn't get where it is today by continuing to make wooden toys. They are constantly evolving & innovating.

@@Miduuza They could still add a "add this set" to pick-a-brick and then show which pieces are missing. Majority of the bricks on a retired set you can find on pick-a-brick after all and most of the time you can find alternatives for the missing pieces.

You made me do it. I checked out and old MOC build the wanted to get about 10 years ago, but the $80+ price tag was to much for me to justify it. Checked it out today on Webrick and got it for $16 (missing 3 printed parts that are hidden anyways in the cockpit).. Plus used the $5 off for a sign up coupon which covers the shipping cost. So $17 in total.

Wow enjoyed the info. I just built the brick bank but with all parts ordered from brick link. I didn't tally it up but was cheaper than buying the set but so much more expensive than WeBrick. I opted out for the windows also as $46 in Australia a piece. Does WeBrick ship overseas?

If a set I want is still in production, I’ll buy from LEGO. If it’s disco’d and still available at a reasonable price, I’ll Bricklink it as a set. I bought the first 4-5 modulars while they were new…then slept few a couple I really want (Bank and Diner). I’m going to check out the difference between part sourcing off of Bricklink and WE Brick. We’ll see where it goes!

I'm quite satisfied with WeBrick, although I wish they'd give you a "Place an Order" option for out-of-stock parts. I can build modulars of my own design - including using bricks in colours Lego don't make (i.e minifig utensil telescope in red, for railings) - for a price that, while high, is still less than the cost of an official lego modular.

One thing I will argue is that while Lego is super expensive, the price appreciation of your sets is invaluable if you put a decent effort in keeping your collection out of the sun, box stored safely, etc. WeBrick essentially has next to no resale value in the lego community, meanwhile a used complete set with box and manuals can be sold for PROFIT after a couple years. I do appreciate what WeBrick is trying to do, and would love for anyone to argue my point because like anyone else I'd love to save a grand, but even then with those deep-gone retired sets from the early 2000s I'd probably just use bricklink. Atleast then they're real pieces.

How do you find out what pieces are missing from your webrick order. Whenever I download the xml file bricklink claims to not have most of my pieces that are missing from the webrick order. Can I go on without some of those pieces?

I have mixed a company called strictly bricks in with my lego bricks before they specialized in unique plates and I got a 32 by 32 color pack for my 16th birthday quite a few years ago and honestly love them especially the grey ones and tan plates which I got 2 green, 2 blue, 2 grey and 2 tan ones and 2 half circle blue ones in a pack as a gift from my mom as an early gift. 1 of the grey and tan ones actually got used to make a space lab for my city a few years ago the walls are all ofical lego bricks but the floor and roof are not but you can't even tell.

Wish I could give you 100👍s. There is nothing wrong (in my personal view) of alternative brands. I build them all the time and honestly...no one notices the difference. Lego is getting crazy expensive, which is sad...but its forcing most of us to find other ways. Totally agree with omitting rare parts, and stickers/prints can always be custom made. Lego should be for everyone but sadly it's becoming more just for the rich. I think a healthy mix of both is just as good. Fantastic video!!!

I've been building lego as an adult since the first modulars came out. But these days I've watched the prices just go crazy. Makes me sad its becoming out of reach for many at a time when we need hobbies. I love the collection I have but, like you, I am not ashamed to add in unique alt brands. I think lego as a brand is missing a lot of opportunities. Used to be a purist but life changes ,and income decline opened up my eyes to alts. I think its great if people can afford all real lego but they have to realise not everyone can. Alt brands give every socio-economic group the chance to enjoy the hobby. It's all about creativity. I hope you video goes far and wide to help people.

@@mishti06 100% agreed. I really appreciate your egalitarian attitude (one that I share). Like you say, Lego, or at least the hobby of building such sets with toy bricks, should be something that can be enjoyed by as many socioeconomic groups as possible.

I have a mix of both Lego brand bricks, and various others, I can definitely tell the difference in quality between certain brands, and of course Lego itself. I honestly didn't mind getting complete sets that were 'stolen' from Lego, because the thing is, if the set is no longer available, I can't buy it from Lego anyway. They are not gonna make money off me either way. I also did a large moc creation in my city, and I bought those parts out of China as well, if I had bought those from Lego, it would have been 4x the cost. I like Lego, but I also like a ton of other stuff, so I have to choose where to buy it from.

Webrick could be costly to buy as there is practically no resale value. Also I hope you could have included the shipping cost and provided a total cost which should be bringing this closer to $200. Now, I am not 100% loyal to Lego, but I better spend $400 and have an opportunity to resale with more money in future than spending $200 with no ROI. Kindly let me know you pov on this if possible.
