Cheers great video. Done the route from Kilmarnock to Newcastle via Dumfries & Carlisle and back in snow. I recognised that back then Hexham station had a model railway shop that sold Hornby train sets and perhaps other manufacturers too . Wondering if it’s still all there. ?

Love 💞 love 💕 love ❤️ Newcastle it's my fave city in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 cause it's full of Geordies who are down to earth for the most part and acknowledge and speak to you. I'm from London and when I came here I still did my best to avoid eye contact and thought saying 'Hi' to someone would make them think I was weird. In London you don't look at anyone on the underground and you don't dare speak to anyone 😂. I've been out and explored the north East, and I've been shopping at the metro centre before. I couldn't live in London again now. I was blessed by the grace of God my dad was a Geordie and I'm so happy and thankfully been received well by the Geordies considering I'm a southerner. I called Prudhoe as in Prudhoo when I was talking to my Geordie friend and she started laughing and said it's pronounced Prudah. I'm not sure if she's right but she's from here so I presume she is 🤷😂.

Ok, so you have sold me on Newcastle. Now tell us what hotels you recommend for my stay! I'm definitely gonna visit your home town! The nearest I've been is Sunderland where my Grandad was born.

Oh I always think if the locals pronounce it like that, it must be true. I’m from Shrewsbury so y’know it’s always pronounced in two different ways. I’m not precious about it but you can tell the locals from the tourists 😂 and I think generally speaking, the further north you get, the friendlier 😊

If I remember there is a Curry line train from Sunderland to Hexham but you need to take your own booze as the curry house doesn't have a drinks license. But the curry house staff do get on the train in Turbans to take your order.

Lovely line that tends to get overshadowed by the Settle-Carlisle. Rode it in 2009 whilst on holiday in Keswick, catching a Stagecoach X4 but to Penrith, then train to Carlisle and then across to Newcastle, spending the day riding the Metro, before heading back in the evening, a great adventure!

No it’s not spectacular but pleasant enough I agree. The stations were nice (most of them anyway) and I would like to see a bit more of the wall but yep, not really sure the best way to do it. Probably by car which is a bit of a shame really although the AD122 I think, would seem to indicate it’s the best bus for the trip 👍

There’s a lovely curry train that runs along the route that I think you’d enjoy! It’s such a lovely line and taken for granted as my local line. Hexham and corbridge are worth a visit. The rolling stock, although old do a job tho at times are very unsuitable. When the East Coast mainline is closed north of Newcastle, LNER divert along this route up to Edinburgh and it’s so worth doing! (Especially in first)

Really enjoyable video as usual from you Mark, such an underrated route whereby the Settle & Carlisle often unfortunately gets all the limelight. I can echo the previous comments regarding Haltwhistle and Bardon Mill being two good stations to visit the wall - the bus route 185 connects Haltwhistle with Gilsland (I think in the summer it also goes to Birdoswald Roman Fort) but is rather sparse. Otherwise route 685 connects Newcastle with Carlisle via a lot of intermediate towns and villages. Haydon Bridge and Corbridge are both lovely villages too (the latter's curry train on a Saturday night is smashing too!).

Very much reflecting my own experiences on some journeys....inconsiderate fellow passengers! Only last week on a journey from London to Leeds the guy in the seat behind me was talking loudly to various people on his phone about his court case appearances, liberally punctuated with various expletives. I have never changed seats so often as I have in recent years. I remember a journey a few years back from Haymarket to Preston and a woman had seated herself in a reserved seat in a carriage that was otherwise empty apart from me and the man who had reserved that seat, and the woman concerned. He asked her to move and she said that the carriage was almost empty so what was his problem? A massive slanging match broke out and it is at such times that I really regretted that I had never learnt to drive! I like the Newcastle to Carlisle route but it is often sprinkled with cancellations these days. However, if you can get a train you will be treated to great views of the River Tyne. I last used this route about the same time that you posted this, having spent the night in a hotel that used to be Jury's on the south side of the river and seeing the most depressed looking stag ever in a "do" that was taking place there. Hotel was good though.

Thankfully informed Transport police. They checked CCTV and saw the mugging. They arranged a return ticket while i contacted bank to stop all my cards. So managed to get home. Heard about a month or so later the mugger was caught. Didn’t get my wallet or mobile back. Never been back to the station again. Company approved flights after this

The new Class 196 trains that run between Birmingham and Shrewsbury are really smart looking inside and out.

There is never any catering on this line. The Hadrians Wall Rover is a legacy ticket now there are widely available advance fares, even on the Cumbria Coast line. If you want to take in Hadrians Wall book an advance train ticket to Hexham, take the AD122 bus from Hexham Station to Haltwhistle Station (£2) then an advance train fare Haltwhistle to Carlisle. Even with a stop at one of the wall sites Newcastle to Carlisle can be done for under £10 (including the 2 bus fares)- to make a day of it. In 4 weeks time I am doing West Cumbria to Newcastle for £7.80 return on the advance fares, with my railcard- just over 200 miles of travel.

Cheers Stuart, there’s a day ranger for that bus too from what others were saying - about £10 so I wouldn’t mind doing that. Unfortunately I don’t qualify for any type of railcard when travelling on my own (not yet anyway) but still not a bad fare imho. 😊👍

Definitely have to agree on the seagull part as I had a bad experience passing under one of the railway bridges in Newcastle (where these birds nested and I still remember the bad smell after 4 years since I last visited Newcastle). Anyway, great video as always. I travelled on this section of the route, but by bus route 685 until Hexham and then by the AD122 bus to Haltwhistle, which I believe you should take into serious consideration for a future video. Yes, the AD122, might take you about £10 aback as it is a special service for the Hadrian's Wall, but is much worth a try. But for £3.80 is definitely a bargain

Cheers mate, I did feel fairly triumphant after avoiding the birds for two days in a row! Love the number of that bus and thanks for the info. I feel like there’s a lot more to explore in this region yet 👍

Im inclined to think that you get better views of the Tyne from the High Level Bridge. Sadly the only regular services that use it these days are the trains to Middlesbrough via Sunderland. Being pedantic, as the Tyne Valley line is older than the Leeds to Carlisle, it would be more correct to say that the Leeds to Carlisle line joined you. Have you ever done the Cumbrian Coast line? Its very picturesque south of Maryport/ Workington.

Hi Simon, yes the Cumbrian Coast line is probably a year or so back in my videos now. You will find it though and it was a bigger bargain than this one.

Interesting and well presented video, thanks for posting. As a resident of North Northumberland, some 15 miles NW of Hexham, I have on some regrettable occasions have to suffer the appalling Northern "Fail" trains. In this day and age it is a disgrace to have to be subject to such outdated and decrepit stock. Hopefully this may change as they are now under the control of the DOT as part of the OLR scheme.

Thanks Allan, yep, I don’t mind the 156, would prefer the 158 but it is what it is currently. TfW have got some new trains down here in Shropshire which are much needed but they run a real mixed bag of old stuff and on some very long routes too. You never know what you’re going to get!

Northern should invest more new trains to replace the ageing fleet as they have opted for 450 new trains and to improve better services for the North of England including Cumbria, Lancashire, County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.

Why pay that much? The lowest available fare is £3 which reduces to £1.95 with a railcard.
