Just watched this for the third time. I am sat in the Mile Castle in Newcastle having just arrived from Carlisle . Thank you for scouting this route for me. A gem indeed ! It also occurs to me that what I needed today was a recorded route commentary where you could point out and explain points of interest. Any chance? It was a return journey with a few hours in Hexham. I recommend the Platform Bar at Hexham station. Excellent pint!

Three times! Well done. And I agree, it is a lovely run. As for the commentary, maybe I need to pitch something to the train companies 🧐 Dunno why you mentioned the pubs though. As you know, I don't really drink at all... 😉 What's you full route on this trip? You might be able to give me some ideas!

Hadrian's wall line is also known as Tyne Valley Line. Back in the early 2010s Class 158/150/2 Sprinters will carry a Pacer
@JohnnyHooverTravels2 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. I think the "Hadrian's Wall Line" name is possibly better marketing for the railway. I do not miss the Pacers at all...

I wish you had given more time to the Newcastle station. I'm making that journey in a little more than 2 weeks time and booked into the Royal Station Hotel. I was hoping to have an idea of how to navigate from the train to the hotel, and the shops, for stocking up on the next leg of my journey. Thank you for pointing out the areas of interest. I'm looking forward to the experience!

Then you need to watch the following video, where I leave Newcastle and head on to Scarborough. The Royal Station Hotel does feature in that one! Newcastle to Scarborough with Transpennine Express Nova 1 and Nova 3 kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooWUg6inaKeCnNE Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

Maybe I'm too late.. Coming out of Newcastle station, turn right, the hotel is less than 100m away. For the shops, come outof the station, take the right exit at the front, cross the road and keep walking straight .. up the pedestrian only Grainger Street. After less than 100 m, cross over and keep walking straight up towards the tall grey's Monument .. the main shops are here, although you'll pass some on the way too

I travelled that line (in the Newcastle to Carlisle direction) a week ago on a Saturday evening. The train was rammed full, it was dark, and not exactly as enjoyable as your trip.

Never knew that the line follows the Hadrian’s Wall. Sometimes ScotRail operate between Carlisle and Newcastle but is mainly run by Northern.
@JohnnyHooverTravels2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It mainly stays North of the line and out of sight, though it is lovely to catch a quick glimpse of it at Gilsland (Milecastle 48) when the train passes over it.

From the east it follows the Tyne up to about Haltwhistle in the west. Its known as the Tyne valley line. In 40+years never heard it called the hadrians wall line

Fair point John. It is how it is marketed at the Carlisle end, but I’m happy agree that’s not how it looks from the Newcastle end.

@@JohnnyHooverTravels I've never been sober enough to notice on the 2 occasions I've been to Carlisle. I suppose as they're knowhere near the Tyne then it makes perfect sense to them.

Great video! I'm going to Newcastle soon and I only have 2 hours there, does anyone recommend a train route / metro route that I could take within 2 hrs?
@JohnnyHooverTravels Жыл бұрын
There's not anything I've done myself... but... if you are already arriving/leaving by mainline train then how's about getting the Metro to South Shields? Then you will cross the Tyne using the Metro's bridge which will give a different view. And the it's only 15 min walk to the beach at North Shields.
@brianmorrison9168 Жыл бұрын
If you are arriving by train, take the Metro (yellow line) . To Monument, Haymarket, Jesmond ... to the coast at Whitley Bay, stay on the metro all the way back to Monument. Change there and either walk back to the mm ain train station (Central) on the metro there. 2 hours is maybe too short, but you could get Metro (again yellow route,) to Gateshead ... Then several stops to South Shields, then take ferry to North Shields (10 minute crossing time) then the free bus up to North Shields metro station, then metro to Percy Main, etc as far as Monument station. As above walk or change metro back to central. You could maybe do it in w hours ..but risky, as ferry only sails every 30 minutes
