I can endure a piercing off-beat whistle myself. Indeed Wilbert Awdry provided for us one of his best constructed stories with 'Old Iron'. With that said he kind of undercuts the boys' significance to the plot, (and Thomas and Percy's to a lesser degree) as though there's nothing else to them aside to foil or be foiled by a senior peer; a common situation when bringing in a minor into a plot, which even the Railway Series does not come lightly out of. I love how the rope tactic despite seeming implausible, hence the fireman's initial bewilderment, is conveyed realistically too - again an indication of authenticity. As for the likely speed during the chase, they would be going fast but not necessarily express speed. Regards, Samuel Farris.

It's so bizarre looking at Wilberts books compared to TVs like in the RWS this is the ONLY instance of Thomas Percy and James interacting at once while we know in the TVS its the main trio. Other example is characters like Harold, Rusty, Bertie, and especially Diesel were way more prominent in TVs.

Does the RWS tributes mainly to the years of British Rail?
@gregkiteos19364 жыл бұрын
A lot of the books from 1958 onwards relate to the changes to Britain's railways that were occurring at the time. These themes include the Modernisation Plan (replacing old-fashioned steam locomotives with modern diesel and electric traction) in such books as Duck and the Diesel Engine, Branch Line Engines, and Enterprising Engines; the Beeching Report (closing down a lot of underused rural branch lines and even some sections of main line) in Enterprising Engines and Oliver the Western Engine; scrapping redundant steam locomotives (The Twin Engines, Stepney the "Bluebell" Engine, and Enterprising Engines (again!)) In fact, between the end of World War II and the Beeching Report, some rural branch lines had closed down with little or no resistance from the local people, as road transport took a lot of the railways' work. This is evident in Toby the Tram Engine (1952). It's not all doom and gloom though. Some of the books cover the heritage railway movement, including Four Little Engines, The Little Old Engine, Gallant Old Engine, and Stepney the "Bluebell" Engine. Those seeds that were sown then grew into the thriving heritage railway movement we have today.

@@gregkiteos1936 For closed line, reminds me of the mid-sodor line that closed down after effects from a new branch line from Killdane.
@terencewilliammckenna61214 жыл бұрын
@@gregkiteos1936 Anyways, the Thomas TV franchise has a whole different level - with Sodor as a special, magical place in the world, with landmarks leading to Europe (like how they can travel to Barrow), and the magic railroad to shining time.
@terencewilliammckenna61214 жыл бұрын
Plus, I notice that the plots of "Very old engines", "Small railway engines", "Enterprising engines", "Oliver the Western engine", and "Duke the lost engine" are each connected to each other. - Following the events of Skarloey's and Rheneas's centenary celebration, Peter-Sam and Sir-Handel think about their old friend Duke, AKA Grandpuff. - Soon after Duck meets the minium-gauge engines in "Ballast", as said in "Donald's Duck", Sir Topham Hatt had him take charge of the line that runs to their railway. Then Oliver joins in after escaping from the scrap-heap. - After "Small Railway engines", where the Alrsdale line had opened for collecting ballast along the routes from the mid-sodor, Duke is found and restored.
@gregkiteos19364 жыл бұрын
@@terencewilliammckenna6121 TATMR isn't really canon to the franchise, it was just a one-off. In fact, it's more relatable to Shining Time Station than to T&F. In The Railway Series, the main line connects to Barrow-in-Furness from Vicarstown. In the early books, the main line ran from Tidmouth to Vicarstown with no direct connection to England. This is why Thomas and the big engines were based at Vicarstown Sheds. When the extension to Barrow was built, Vicarstown Sheds was demolished and the North Western Railway's headquarters were moved to Tidmouth on the other side of the island. This was something that wasn't picked up on in the TV series until Andrew Brenner became head writer.

Why was his driver in hospital
@Shadowwand3 жыл бұрын
We don't know, but that is nice that the book wraps up with the Boys being caught, and the Driver going to and recovering from the Hospital really highlights how serious his condition was when James had to stop his freight train. Plus I Like the James missed his driver. The engines don't run right if someone unfamiliar with them is at the controls. That Driver knows about the little Quirks or amount of steam to Start James, things like that. James can tell if it's not his usual driver. I wish there was maybe a little more of that in the show. Show off drivers, Careful and timid drivers, the crews who might have an effect on the engines and their performance.
@Nic_27517 ай бұрын
@@Shadowwandto be fair, the problem with this is that of course the humans age, Fat controller was a title held by different men one after the other, so they simply choose to acknowledge the humans as little as possible, to not draw attention to that detail, also the characters “making mistakes” for the plot kinda raises more questions about if they truly drive themselves or not
