Peter Goodman, New York Times correspondent and author of the just-published book, Davos Man: How the Billionaires Devoured the World, talks to Rob about how inequality is not inevitable, but has been engineered through the political process by selling us a false idea of what is possible.

But that was a sellout of free/fair trade to corporatism made possible by failure of our representatives and institutional watchdogs to protect the nation they were sworn to protect. Third world goods were EXEMPTED from labor, environmental, and quality standards enforced on domestic producers while government contracts were awarded to the lowest bidder, regardless of quality. My major interest in great personal wealth are the power dynamics it entails. Just study what happens to people who get a disproportionate amount of power, through any means, and you will be able to predict the behavior of Davos man. Such a man will: 1.) believe that this excess of power is rightfully his for some reason. This dates back to the Devine right of kings. It is also firmly rooted in Calvinism. 2.) Since this power is rightfully his, his very having it signals his superior virtue. Therefore, he knows more than anyone else what is best for those with less power, as well as for himself. 3.) Because he knows what's best for everyone, he believes that everything he does is, in the long term, virtuous. 4.) For this reason, he will believe that anyone who criticizes him is really attempting to hold back progress. And the cure for this is, of course, is more power for himself. Late 20th century capitalism, or perhaps the worship of it, has become malignant. In order to avoid the mistakes of the gilded age, and the totalitarian communism, which sprang up as a reaction to it, we must embrace the idea that all worthy power comes with outside accountability (by actual people, not vague "market forces" or even Devine ones). Such power, with no accountability, must be seen as inherently pernicious. It is also highly addictive. My view is that the amount of wealth anyone can accumulate must be limited.
@peterbelanger4094
@peterbelanger4094 2 жыл бұрын
Concentration of power is the problem. Even in non capitalist governments, power still exists, and it is the positions of power that attract the psychopath. A totalitarian, communist regime is just a perfect capitalist monopoly. The CCP could be considered the biggest corporation in the world with the most expansive monopoly. That highly addictive power is more diffused in a free market. And such massive amounts of wealth generally are a result of socialist government intervention helping to create monopolies or powerful cartels through strict regulation that blocks out smaller competition. Focusing on "capitalism" as the bad guy in this is an error. Such large corporations today that wield so much power would not be possible without government help. We need regulation that keeps the big guys from getting too big and helps small business get a start, currently, we have the opposite. Society need to recognize the danger in positions of power and work to diffuse that as much as possible, currently too many simplistically demonize money and profit seeking.
@bobcornwell403
@bobcornwell403 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterbelanger4094 I agree with at least some of what you said. But I don't buy the libertarian argument that monopolies only happen because government intervention. I'm convinced the opposit is true. Smaller, more local governments are incredibly vulnerable to the influence of large, wealthy corporations. Often, the large wealthy corporation becomes the largest employer, and sometimes the only employer. It has plenty of resources to spread around, even to local law enforcement, who often, one way or the other, soon find themselves doing the company's bidding. The way capitalism generally works is that some smaller companies get bigger and buy up or merge with their competitors. Once that happens, these new larger companies get the advantages of scale, making it harder for their competitors to compete effectively. Eventually, there's only a few large companies left. It takes no central government conspiracy to make this happen. In fact, it takes a large, centralized government to stop it from happening. Left to itself, the market will produce nothing but oliligopolies and monopolies. The only assistance needed from the government, for this to happen, is protection of patent and property rights.

The concept of the "common good" is the very crux of the whole dilemma. It has been thrown under the bus and then ignored by Davos Man. Taken to the hypothetical extreme they are creating a world where fewer and fewer people can afford the goods and services they provide! That apparent nonchalant attitude coupled with the shrinking viability of the Earth itself and of the resources it provides evokes very deep and dark questions.
@aretwodeetoo1181

Well, fact of the matter is they are right about the shrinking viability of the Earth to support our growing population, technology level and waste. Ofc, how they set out to address it is unconscionable and anyway their top priority is always to stay in power. The "common good" was always a cover. And the only reason they care about the Earth is because THEY live in it.

As many of the comments point out, none of this critique is new. But in every election where this issue comes up, people advocating increased taxes for the rich get successfully smeared as socialists, and the minority right in America with the majority of senate seats and electoral votes ultimately prevents any change and prefers a transition to an authoritarian oligopoly so long as it is their billionaire in charge. The American system of government seems wholly unable to solve this problem productively, and in the absence of a real solution, politicians turn to large scale money printing that inflates stocks and increases the power of billionaires. This has already happened twice in 2008 and 2020 and it seems like neither the left or right has learned from it. If the state is unable to increase taxes on billionaires it simply has no power over them in a society where money can buy you votes, laws, and public opinion.

So far I've heard the first 28 minutes of the video and I am enjoying it. By the 28th minute, you popped the question: "what's the solution?" So, I'm gonna give my opinion, although I'm certain it won't be well received by all. The problem is multifaceted. But I can sum it up in a few words: • Selfishness. • A scheming mind. • No love of neighbor. • No Conscience. • No Heart. Many will agree with what I've said so far. However, many will disagree with my following statements... I think all of the above is a result of us becoming more and more of a God-less society. Many do not feel accountable to a higher spiritual authority. Nowadays, to even mention the word "GOD," in secular circles (work, school), is becoming increasingly frowned upon. All we teach now is: "survival of the fittest." That's a "me-first" world view. And we wonder how we got here? Really? Seriously? A very wise spiritual teacher once said that the whole law of the prophets rested on 2 commandments: 1) to LOVE God with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength. 2) to LOVE our neighbor as ourselves. What's wrong with those commandments? Why have those basic moral teachings become so unpopular, and even frowned upon in secular circles? Sure, religion has created its share of problems. But that was caused by people. Anytime you have people involved, you will have problems. But that's certainly not God's fault. Sure, everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want. Also, there are atheists who have excellent ethics, and there are others who claim to be religious, but who have no moral compass. There are always exceptions. I'm talking about SOCIETY IN GENERAL and being accountable to a higher power. And you can argue my point. But time is telling the story. Just pay attention. Can't you see? The more of a God-less society that we become, the larger the gap is increasing between those who are on the top, and the rest of us on the bottom.

Captain Ahab, the monomaniacal skipper of that doomed vessel is the prototype of Davos Man. Blind greed - I repeat and emphasize - BLIND - greed will prove to be the demise of Human Civilization.

While it's all very interesting, the trouble is they only deal with the SYMPTOMS, but NEVER the ORIGINAL CAUSE of an "ancient curse" that has bedevilled our species for countless millennia - According to psychologist KURT LEWIN's Boy Scout summer camp experiment in 1945, on 3 different leader ship ( which I equate to parenting ) styles # 1 - Laissez Faire- French for "Do nothing" - Which kids don't like it # 2 - Autocratic/ Over controlling - Kids HATE IT - As would any healthy person! # 3 - DEMOCRATIC - KIDS LOVE IT ! From that & closely observing my own two young kids I carried out a few micro experiments to see how they reacted ( & given the choices were numerically likely to fail, was prepared to back off, as necessary ) - It didn't take me long to obtain clear results from the change in my kids behaviour for me to conclude that not only was Lewin right but that it seems very probable that we are born "hard wired" to be both DEMOCRATIC & SOCIABLE! The problem with that is if we have abusive parents/relatives/teachers/etc then this is likely to bring the child into conflict with them as the child eventually feels forced to stand up for itself & express it's unhappiness as best they can. I don't know about elsewhere but in the UK this unnecessary conflict is labelled as the "terrible 2s" where most unaware parents will escalate a minor disagreement into a battle of wills that results in the over controlling parent escalating an often quite unnecessary situation to a level where they eventually end up crushing the child's spirit & probably setting them up with repressed anger for the rest of their lives. Another contributing factor to such problems is that as the parent has lived longer in their dysfunctional society they are likely to be more screwed up than the child who not having lived that long is more healthy than their parent ! - But I doubt many adult-children are capable of controlling their negative emotions long enough to engage their cortex to consider if they are over reacting let alone consider the consequences of the long term damage they are likely to cause including labelling the kid as a "problem child"( which is the parent "hitting the easy button" ), trotting them off to the local "trick cyclist" who instantly buys into the mother's labelling ( as it fits too easily with their own dubious THEORY / false ideology ) & thus they gang up to show the kid the "error of their ways" & if they ( not realising the gravity of what is @ stake ) make the mistake of standing up to this more refined but more dangerous form of over control they are likely to be prescribed RITALIN, prolonged excessive use of which causes the brain to swell up against the inside of their skull & cause PERMANENT brain damage ! - Hardly progress beyond the middle ages when they only bled the kid to keep them quiet ! Thankfully not all psychiatrists/ psychologists operate @ such a low level. In contrast ,THE child psychologist ALICE MILLER stated that 90% of our species are dysfunctional because of authoritarian - abusive- toxic parenting The symptoms that result from that cause @ one end of the continuum, people who take nicotine-alcohol-drugs to medicate their emotional pain to @ the other end the "great" dictators of the 20th century Hitler/Stalin/Mao/Pol Pot ( It is no random coincidence that they were all abused children who's pathological defence mechanism was to become psychopaths e.g. shut down emotionally & seek power to protect themselves) Unfortunately these dictators obtained such power as to allow them to re-enact their child hood traumas-dramas on the world stage leading to World War / Holocaust - Genocide / deliberate famine / etc While I feel sorry for what happened to them as kids clearly, @ the VERY least psychopaths should NEVER EVER be given power - & clearly we have yet to learn that lesson ! BTW - ALICE MILLER has written over a dozen books on this topic & a good starting point is "For Your Own Good: The Roots of Violence in Child-Rearing " As for capitalists profiting from disasters etc, we learned about that from The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism - 1 May 2008 by Naomi Klein

The US and Europe markets have almost been picked clean. They have saddle consumers and the government with debt and dismantled labor unions suppressed wadges. We can no longer expect social mobility but expect decline for each generation. They look to untapped market's like Asia and the middle east, then eventually maybe global south. It almost reminds me of gentrification but on a global scale. Hedges is right about huge sacrifice zones left in the US where we have been abandoned. They will have to offer a UBI at some point but who would want to be dependent on this government for survival as it is?

I agree with you, didn't see the pandemic coming either, completely by surprise, but allow me to tell a story that goes to the heart of the matter. In 1976, I was US Army, we were told; "All you all gunna take the shot", there was a virulent outbreak of Swine Flu, and thay rushed a Vaccine, and there was no debate, so I show up at the make shift shot clinic, the cafeteria aka mess hall, first thing nobody was watching me, complete Kaos, without missing a beat, I took off my starched fatigue shirt, rolled up my left sleeve of my whit t-shirt, walked up to the exit station with my right hand over my left arm and announced; "Ouch, that hurt", the guy looked up, checked my name off the list, walked injection free, the next day 100 of my guys wound up in sic bay. $150 million spent on vaccines, one guy at Ft. Dixx died from the flu, $76 million spent by DOJ, to clean up all the medical lawsuits, and the entire mess was memory holed, and I am still here as living testimony, your welcome

Don't stop til we have our freedom back. The world is watching us and I hope they follow our example. We all need our freedoms back. Enough of this incompetent gov. and their owners! We need a gov. that serves the people, not the other way around. No matter if the mandates come off or not, we as Canadians have to make a stand! Go back to living our lives, no masks, no vaccines, no lockdowns! What can they do? Lock up the entire country? It has to stop and we as a people have way more power as a whole compared to small groups. This convoy is evidence to that fact. So keep on "Truckin!" and fighting the good fight Canada!
