I used the yellow foam board with aluminized surface in my top bar hives last winter. The foam has been destroyed by carpenter ants in one winter. They chew the foam for nesting not to feed. I believe the problem has potential to be a major problem. I suggest looking for 100% wool thrift store clothing as a possible economical source of insulation. I live in Houston TX

This is a great video series, thank you for filming and posting them. Most of the building video's for this hive are made by woodworkers, with all the tools you would ever need for any project. This shows you can keep it simple and so far has given me the best feel for how this hive is made.

Thanks for the video, do you foresee any issue with more moisture in the hive using the foam board since its also a moisture barrier compared to standard fiberglass insulation?

Scott Insulation in buildings is such a changing science. I believe that the foam insulation will mostly keep everything on the inside of the foam surface at a nearly equal temperature and the outside will do the same. This should go a long way in preventing liquid moisture formation in hive surfaces. Use of a bio floor is a reasonable thing to investigate, possibly eliminating the double floor. Where the wood bridges the inside/outside surfaces heat will transfer more rapidly to the cooler side with some possible condensation forming on the warmer side of the wall in the bridging areas. This condensation should be much less than with conventional hives and I believe the bees will easily handle it. For my climate I have made a full circle on my thinking and now believe the solid wood version with peaked insulated roof is the best solution for my bees. I have been successful overwintering my bees in top bar hives with 1/8” hardware cloth 100% open vented bottoms and no attic insulation. I am hopeful that a little more insulation on top and less drafty bottom will allow my bees to use less energy to thermal regulate.

Looks like you used Foamular 250 foam instead of the "general purpose" 150 psi, is this on purpose or you just used what you had?

Hello my friend, I would like to ask your help on a wood-shop matter. I purchased and have put together my entire flow hive 2 and messed it up in a couple ways. For one, i stripped out a couple holes and am going to try adding a toothpick to help correct it. Yet I would like to ask help with another mistake I made. I did not use 90* angle corner clamps to make sure they set straight, and now the my base and two brood boxes don't line up with one another. So I have taken them all apart, order the brasses, yet don't know how to correct the screw holes that are already set? I feel like even with the brasses intact, the screws are going to go right back into the same hole pattern and the boxes will again be off centered. Someone told me I could try to slightly bend each screw. Or should I add toothpicks in all the holes then try to re-screw? What would you recommend? It would be so helpful to hear back from you. This is a project that is very important to me, as you well know. Thank you so much. Brad

Maybe you can drill each hole larger to accommodate a dowel that you glue in and flush cut each end and start over. With a good exterior glue on those finger joints they should be strong enough to stay together for years without the addition of screws.
