I'm laughing when he was confused in betty haha. Newfie, in the song "betty," Taylor is from James' POV. James used to be with Betty. James wants to make up to her because he had a summer fling with a girl. The girl James cheated with is the one singing in August. Cardigan is Betty's POV.

And then we all know Rebakah was also called Betty...and once Betty and James broke up and time passed by....she married Bill and "The Last Great American Dynasty" came into being.

Peace: Taylor's saying that so long as her current boyfriend is with her, there will be outside forces (the media and general public) who will be constantly invading their privacy. Her boyfriend was an up-and-coming actor who most people hadn't heard of before he was romantically linked to Taylor, and now he's forever linked to her because he never even got a chance to make a name for himself in entertainment before they got together - people know him more for being Taylor Swift's boyfriend than for his work. Taylor's used to people invading her privacy and heavily speculating about her personal business, but her boyfriend has to accept that into his life in order to be with her. So she's asking if her love is enough for him to stay with her, despite the negatives. She says the danger lives in her because there's no way to separate the superstar whose personal life has been tabloid fodder for over a decade, from the Taylor she is with him.

Explanation according to Taylor's and Aaron Dressner words: Mad woman: has a lot of different meanings, it could be about a relationship, it could be refering to how society sees women who speak up as "mad or crazy" and it also could be about Taylor's fight for the ownership of her masters and being depicted as a mad woman for it Betty: is from James POV in the love triangle (cardigan, august and Betty) he had a summer fling (august) and now he's apologizing to Betty Peace: in "would it be enough if I could never give you peace?" she's asking if her love and all the good things in their relationship (this is about her life) would be enough for him, knowing that she's always gonna be in the public eye and there's always gonna be drama around her, like it's been her whole career. She's also said that she's the chaotic one in the relationship and Joe brings her peace, so she's saying she can't promise him that

In Betty she is singing from the perspective of ‘James’, one of the characters in the trilogy. In this album she’s using fictional devices to tell stories, so I think a lot are supposed to be open to interpretation. They can mean what you want them to mean, although fans have theories about what she might have been thinking :)

Mad Woman is like My Tears Richochet about her former record label selling her catalog (songs) to Scooter Braun. They called her crazy, emotional, and a liar. Scooter's wife wrote an extensive online attack of Taylor that I think she was alluding to in terms of hating me brought you two together though she'll find out. I think the songs work about relationships very well, but in this instance, Taylor is clearly saying things regarding how professional women are painted as crazy as well.

Hands down the best folklore reaction out there, a true deep dive into the lyrics which is the core of any Taylor Swift album. Enjoyed all three parts! folklore was an early birthday present for me (cause it is today) and I'm glad to spend part of my birthday watching your reaction to my favourite album from Taylor. Peace for Taylor was about “even though we love each other so much, my life is crazy and i get a lot of attention so i will never bring you a peaceful quiet life.” but for me, when i listen to peace, i take my own life experience and think: “i love you so much but my depression, anxiety, etc. will never go away so i will never be able to bring you that type of peace.” i.e. when she says “the rain is always gonna come if you’re standing with me”

People get mad when you call them mad because usually when someone is mad, it's because they've reached the breaking point after a long time of not having their concerns heard. Often because the person they've been having issues with was ignoring them. So they feel like their valid concerns aren't being acknowledged and then they make a scene so that the person is no longer able to ignore them. But if you call them crazy instead of finally paying attention and trying to understand what's wrong, that's just continuing to not acknowledge the issues so that's why they get even more mad.

As i understand it, Taylor is telling this 3-way love triangle through 3 different songs, In Betty she is telling it from James perspective (these songs are stories and not all are directly about Taylor though some are). There is also an idea circulating that this is based on a Friends tv show episode. Taylor is a big Friends fan.

i think in 'hoax' she's talking about loving someone despite their flaws. and in 'peace', she talks about one of her own flaws, which is that she can't have a quiet life, and hoping her partner accepts it. i feel like they go well together, even though - taylor being taylor - hoax is really over the top. i think other people hurt her a lot. but if someone is so close to her, every little thing they do can hurt just as much. in other news, i really enjoyed your reaction, and how you tried to come up with several theories for each song :) thank you

I think mad woman has two possible meanings ..the first is that it could be from Rebacca perspective (you remember the song the last great american dynasty )or it could be about Taylor's life on how Her old label Steal her entire life work and about kanye who was trying to ruin her life so she is basically saying that she is mad about what happened

In “Epiphany”, we start out in a ‘regular’ battlefield, but transition to current battlefields that are the hospitals in America filled with COVID patients - their families unable to touch them except through plastic. It is absolutely supposed to make you emotional. 😢

Epiphany is certainly not a song to talk. It is listening. Not winding forward skipping the most important part: the music. You will not grab the meaning of the song skipping notes. The song is about a nurse seeing people dying (something you can't speak about. Only 20 minutes to sleep: nurses work 24 hour shifts and more, and just when wanting to sleep, an emergency comes in. Only in these 20 minutes they may reflect what they have seen. A psychological perspective. The sequence at the end is the sound a nurse hears on the intensive care ward (translated to music instruments of course).

August, Betty & Cardigan Trilogy Explained (or at least how I interpret it): It isn't clear whether Betty and James were actually dating or still in the flirting stage. I like to think that they weren't together, but had been close for a while and crushing on each other. But at the school prom night before summer break, Betty asked James to dance but James hated the crowd and refused to dance. In my head, they had a fight and Betty put on an attitude since they weren't together anyway, so she went ahead to dance with another guy to make James jealous. James did become jealous but instead of going after her, he got drunk. While walking home on the cobblestones, August approached him with her car. August is a beautiful glamorous girl who happens to have a crush on James. Out of pettiness towards Betty, intensified by the booze, James took August's offer and the affair went on throughout the summer. In my head, James staying with Augustine despite missing Betty was out of pride, since they were fighting since the prom night. Whereas Augustine knew their affair would not last because James didn't seem into it, and she must've known about Betty but hoped she'd have a chance since James and Betty were fighting. As the summer ended, Augustine gave up because clearly, James wanted to reconcile with Betty. Unfortunately, Betty's friend, Inez who loves gossips, found out about James X Augustine summer fling, and she told Betty. When they got back to school, Betty switched homeroom to avoid James and James waited for a chance to apologize at her party. Taylor said that in her mind, Betty accepted James' apology and many swifties hated it. Hear me out. I also believe she took James back. If we go with my storyline, James didn't actually cheat, so it wouldn't be too much of a deal for Betty to accept him. BUT! Remember Cardigan is sung from an older and grown up Betty. She was reminiscing an old flame; she sang in past tense throughout the song. The reason why the song is bittersweet shows that Betty X James had a happy relationship and possibly broken up for a different reason. And Betty's reminiscent reveals that she has never gotten over that one summer James hurt her.

Re: peace... she is Taylor Swift. Her life will never be normal or calm or private. There is no option available for true peace to her or her partner forevermore. I think it's an ode to her boyfriend Joe who is somewhat but not extremely famous, and is thus uniquely able to deal with that reality. Being with her means being with them one of the most famous women on earth, and all that that entails.

Hoax is about reflecting on the end of a relationship and how hurt she was/is. She's so heartbroken she asks for a reason to keep going. Your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in...Your love isn't faithful, but faithless and therefore a complete hoax, but she still believes in it bc it's all she knows and can't let go. Somewhat dysfunctional of a relationship bc she says don't want no other shade of blue but you, no other sadness in the world would do...meaning she is so devastated, but still loves him and wouldn't want anyone else to be sad about.
