When Australia became a federation Sydney and Melbourne argued as to which should be the capital and as a compromise Canberra was built "halfway" (it's actually much closer to Sydney) between the two. But the first sitting of Parliament took place in Melbourne while Canberra and federal Parliament House were built.

You did really well! I couldn't believe the international dialing code answer: +81 is for Japan. It reminded me of an answer in the original version of "Trivial Pursuit". The question was "How many grooves does a standard LP have?" and the answer was 1. I guess they forget that an LP is 2-sided. I got into a big argument with my cousin over that because I had a piece of pie riding on the answer!

As a proud Melburnian I must correct a little piece of information that as of last year is now out of date: as of April 2023, Melbourne's population outgrew Sydney's, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This is a technicality as the ABS revised how they measure the boundaries of the cities and so the area surrounding Melton was added to Melbourne's population, but the populations of Australian cities as they are officially recognised are from the ABS.
@schmuelking15353 ай бұрын
also Sydney still include Central Coast for some reason, despite it now being considered part of regional NSW and no longer in Greater Sydney. By that logic, Melbourne should include Geelong.
@d.robertdigman12933 ай бұрын
@@schmuelking1535 I'm not so sure of that. Melton is 47 km from Melbourne's CBD. Geelong is 75 km from the CBD. Further, Melton is a suburb of Melbourne whereas Geelong is a separate city.

@d.robertdigman12933 ай бұрын
@@schmuelking1535 The distance is not the only factor. In terms of Melbourne, Melton is considered a suburb, Geelong a separate city. Thus Gellong cannot be counted as part of Melbourne's population. The situation regarding Sydney's relationship with Central Coast is beside the point here.
@schmuelking15353 ай бұрын
@@d.robertdigman1293 I'm not actually saying that Geelong should be considered part of Melbourne. I was just making a note that Central coast shouldn't be considered part of Sydney, and that Sydney has historically included an area that is a really long distance away, which should never been included in its population numbers. Thus saying that for some time Sydney has been over reporting its numbers, and for some it has actually been the smaller city.

Due to the infighting between Sydney and Melbourne over being the National Capital, it was decided to select a location near equal between both cities; eventually a sheep paddock in rural New South Wales was selected, this was sectioned off as the Australian Capital Territory with the city being called Canberra. Bondi Beach is world famous largely because of the TV documentary series “Bondi Rescue”, which features our lifeguards and the thousands of rescues they perform every year. It’s mostly tourists who wind up in trouble because they ignore the signs, the flags and the lifeguards, and just swim wherever they want to, which results in them getting caught in a rip and being unable to swim because they’ve never swum in the ocean before and the currents will carry them far from shore. Swim between the flags! That’s why they’re on the beach! Many episodes are on KZbin but you can’t react to them, just watch them and realise what a fantastic job our lifeguards are doing.

Q 13: Sydney has never been the capital of Australia, though it is the capital of the state of New South Wales. When Australia became Australia on 1 January 1901, Melbourne was the capital, but Sydney complained thinking that it should be the capital, so in the 1920s a new capital was built from scratch, so an area of land was carved out of New South Wales to become the Australian Capital Territory (not a state) and Canberra was built in the middle of it. The name Canberra is believed to have come from the local Aboriginal language and means 'meeting place'. Don't worry about thinking the capital was Sydney, most non-Australians think that, so we're used to it. It's kind of like most Aussies think the capital of Canada is Toronto, not Ottawa, which we've never heard of. To be honest, half the Australians I've met think Sydney is the capital, but they were all from Sydney. 😁 Q 22: Socceroos are the Australian Football/Soccer team. Q 25: We used the (Australian) pound up until 14 February 1966 when we changed to the Aussie dollar with 2 dollars = to the pound. Q 26: Our highest mountain was named by a Polish explorer after a famous Pole. In Australia we pronounce it Kozzie-‘os-koh with the stress on the second part. I doubt that any Pole would recognise the name however as it would be pronounced Kosh-oosh-koh in Polish. I think Mount Wellington is in New Zealand. So your pronunciation was pretty good in an Aussie sort of way. Geelong - perfect! You nailed it! I think you must be becoming a true blue Aussie mate. Good on ya! Q 27: You were right. It's +61. +81 is Japan and +44 is the UK. Q 30: If you ever want to invade Australia, and we have a great fear of being invaded, Melbourne Cup Day would be the time to do it. The whole country comes to a standstill during the running of the race. Q 31: All those early Dutch explorers! Q 35: Actually July is in winter, not summer. December is in summer, which is why we all go surfing on Christmas Day. 😅 You did well. Possibly better than many Australians would have done. I feel proud to call you an honorary Aussie. Lol, sorry, laughing at the capital question. We Sydneysiders think we are anyway. Bit of trivia. Three of Sydney's major bridges were opened 32 years apart: 1932, 1964, 1996. You did so well with the mountain pronunciation. Just one vowel. Koz-ee-us-co, some people say the u closer to an o as well. Bon-die, not Bon-dee. In general, Australians shorten the first vowel of a word, and emphasise and lengthen the second vowel, generally the opposite of American speech. Bondi is a great example to see the difference. The reason is that we often run words into each other in a sentence to speed up speech. People think we shorten the length of words with our slang, but really we shorten how long it takes to say them. Most of the time that also shortens the number of letters, but not all the time. Sheep outnumber us 3:1. Wow, great job! Loving your videos.

Sydney is still ahead in the main measure, the media attention came about when Melbourne went ahead in the less frequently used measure, the result of an outlying suburb reaching the required population density and contiguity to be included. As is often the case, the media didn’t give the full story.

The Atlantic stops at West coast of Africa. The Indian Ocean is between Australia and East Coast of Africa
@stephenogier74993 ай бұрын
The Atlantic is between the Americas and Europe and Africa. Australia is on the other side of Africa and is separated from it by the Indian Ocean and then to the east we are separated from the Americas by the Pacific Ocean, so no, our shores are not washed by the Atlantic Ocean. If we want some cold water to swim in, we go south to the Southern Ocea (also called the Antarctic Ocean).

There was intense rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne over which city would become the capital of Australia, they couldn’t come to any agreement so it was decided to build a whole new city half-way between them - and so Canberra was born.

Horror … gasp … Sydney is not the capital. They originally couldn’t decide between Sydney or Melbourne so they built a planned city roughly half way between the 2 … hence the capital Canberra
@simbob263 ай бұрын
… and Melbourne was the temporary capital from 1901 until 1927 while the city was being chosen, planned and built. Sydney has always been the capital of New South Wales, but has never been the capital of Australia.

Hehehe! We can’t pronounce it either! We’ve been saying it wrongly for more than a century! “Mount Kosciuszko was named by Polish explorer Paul Strzelecki in 1840 after Polish cultural and political hero Tadeusz Kosciuszko. It is part of the Kosciuszko National Park, which includes other peaks in the Australian Alps mountain range.” We all say “kozi-osko” but the Polish visitors and migrants know the correct way. Here’s a giggle including a clip from an Aussie girl, but from a Polish website: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWW6qXWspc18r8ksi=-xtADZ0SlJTlLETb

In Australia there was a big debate as to where the Capital would be placed, so a little like the US, we created an area then purpose built a City to be the Capital. The ACT (or Australian Capital Territory) was purpose placed and Canberra (Can-bih-rah, you barely say the bih almost Canbra) was built so that the Capital neither favoured Brisbane, Melbourne nor Sydney, despite being VERY close to Sydney. [EDIT:] The Mountain is pronounced, koh-zee(or see)-os(or oz)-ko by most people. Nice work with Geelong. To be honest, you're still doing Melbourne wrong, but all North Americans do. It's closer to Mull-bin, we do not emphasise the R at all. You did really good mate, nice work. The dialling code was wrong, it's +61

Your pronunciation of Mount Kosciuszko was probably closer to what is the modern official pronunciation than how most Australians would pronounce it. The word is originally Polish as the European Explorer who first climbed to its peak was Polish and named it Kosciuszko after the name of a famous folk hero in Poland who was also somehow involved in American history. Originally the spelling and pronunciation was highly Anglicised but recently the official spelling and pronunciation has reverted back to more closely resemble the Polish forms. So your pronunciation of Kosciuszko is probably closer to being officially correct than how most Australian adults would pronounce it. Few Australians could probably spell it correctly without a spell checker or dictionary. Wikipedia does have quite an informative article on the naming of Mount Kosciuszko. Many Australians just refer to it as "Kossy". Canberra in Australia is bit like Shangri-La in that many from other nations seem to think that Canberra is a mythical or made up city in a mythical or made up land. But Canberra is where all the houses of the Federal Parliament sit, where most of the head offices of the departments of the Public Service are located, where the head office of the Dept of Defence, ASIO, Customs, Immigration, Federal Police, and other Federal Security Organisations are located, where the Military Officer Training University is along with other elite University campuses, and where some of the most prestigious Australian museums are, all in a very picturesque setting that relatively few tourists seem to visit. Mind the weather can be quite abominable at times with hot dry summers and strong arid winds, and cold miserable winters where snow sometimes falls and gathers on the tops of nearby hills and the winds carrying the most chilled air right down along the wide streets of Canberra. It can get cold but not cold enough to be considered pleasant like you might get in Canada in the middle of Winter.

The Sydney/Melbourne size thing is debatable, it depends how you cut it, and whether you include Melbourne's satelite suburbs and the Central Coast as part of Sydney. Overall they are about the same size, but Sydney still includes the Central Coast in its population figures despite the Central Coast being declared not part of Greater Sydney and part of Regional NSW. By that logic, Melbourne should include Geelong in its population figures. Anyway, its all about how you determine what is included, but with the way Melbourne is growing at the moment, pretty soon Melbourne will be bigger regardless of how you cut it.
