"sounds like they did everything in the studio" if by studio you mean Avi and Kevin's kitchen and closet, you'd be correct
@ChristopherTate7 жыл бұрын
Well, not quite; they recorded the individual tracks in the closet, but it was professionally mixed & produced. But they also slay in person -- they never record or produce *anything* that they can't do the same way in live performance. It's all honest.

As I have a slight familiarity with music production and an interest in Pentatonix, Here is how I feel they work and how I would try to duplicate what they do. First, they arrange vocally as a unit....I would say they can do the song "live" before much of anything gets to tape...then Kevin lays down beat to click track with probably Mitch and Scott in his ear to help with where the changes are....Then Avi lays down bass parts....I would guess Scott lays down a reference lead vocal, all then lay down various vocal sound effects (they all did some on this one it seems) then the various lead vocal parts are done, Scott's reference vocal is removed...vocal touch ups and done.....

this song in particular i believe had absolutely NO studio help or autotune, considering they filmed this in a closet in one of their houses lol. i'm sure on some of their albums they've had studio help, but at the same time they can completely rock ANY of their songs live. they pretty much sound exactly the same live.

Also interesting facts about this GRAMMY-WINNING video, the video was filmed in a kitchen using a large black bedsheet or tarp as the background, and then all of the audio was filmed in a closet! This was back before.. well.. they had money!
@tylergirl19707 жыл бұрын
Grammy winning arrangement.... not video. Huge difference.
@maylithplays1207 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the point that Matthew is trying to make however is that you can produce quality video for little to no money....they just used what they had on hand....honestly, the only true cost in the video was the make-up, hair and contacts.....
@eugenegrewing25877 жыл бұрын
Matthew Rents The audio was recorded in a studio. It’s from their second studio album.

The audio was recorded in a bedroom closet... the group has stated this on numerous occasions including their grammy acceptance speech.

They had no money for studio time. They recorded the tracks themselves and just had a distribution deal with a label for their EP's at that time.

They definitely slay this song live. There's an off mic performance video recorded backstage - just look up "Pentatonix Daft Punk mix private performance" on KZbin to see how good they sound without any microphones other than a cellphone.
@berha32937 жыл бұрын
And if you want to see a professional video of them performing this song live with mics and the full stage setup, you can look up the KZbin video "Pentatonix World Tour 2016 - Daft Punk ( Raleigh, NC )". It's from a Yahoo live stream of their full concert.
@ohifonlyx337 жыл бұрын
eh, imo that's not the best quality... for a live-in-concert version she might as well check out *Pentatonix World Tour 2016 | Dallas, TX | "Cristus / Aha / Daft Punk"* and also experience Avi's bass in it's full glory during Christus as well as Mitch nailing the notes in AHA and of course the choreo and timing all on point in Daft Punk....

Yours are some of my favorite PTX reactions. :) Hardly being able to believe it could just be them on their own because it's so perfect is a great reaction. ^_^ I also like how you don't interrupt the song with a lot of pausing.

I've seen them perform this live and it sounds just like this! They are that awesome.
@anonymousblah44867 жыл бұрын
Haha, I understand what you're saying but this all them! There is a private performance of them singing this live and it sounds just the same. The thing I've noticed is I think Kevin does 2 things for this, the beatbox and that windy-effect which i think was recorded separately and layered over, I haven't learnt music and I understand very little of the technical aspects so I could be wrong. In the live performances, its that windy-effect that's not heard as he is beatboxing and can't do both at once. This was filmed in their kitchen and recorded in their closet all for under $400 by the way.! And they won the Grammy for the arrangement. They actually have 3 Grammys now. There are some songs where they actually sound better live than the recording, one such example is a concert live performance you might wanna check out: "Aha" live at the Singapore Star Vista. They blow my mind! Also their cover of Gold which is another live cover. Its fantastic. 😍
@berha32937 жыл бұрын
Anonymous Blah They've actually done the wind effect live - Avi and Kevin took turns doing it.

Exactly. Even as far back as the Sing Off, Avi and Kevin shared "special effects" duty.

If you liked the cyberpunk/rave/EDM look of this video, you'll probably like their original song "Love Again", which is very similar in its production process (although it's stepped up a bit, since they spent more than $400 like they did on this one).. If you like the vocal interplay, you could look at "Cheerleader", which has a really well-done breakdown midway through the song. If you like the beat, you could look at "Problem", which also has a good beat. The latter two are a bit farther off this than the first suggestion, but I suspect you will have trouble finding a Pentatonix song which you don't like. They can take songs which people can't stand and make them at least palatable, and can take songs one likes to an entirely new level.
@ohifonlyx337 жыл бұрын
I could and have listened to artists like Beyonce, Bieber, Michael Jackson, Daft Punk, Queen, and Ariana Grande almost only through PTX covers or mashups. If I heard a Beyonce song on the radio, I wouldn't be able to name it... I'd just think of the next transition in the PTX evolution. While I recognize some of those songs that they cover... I've never really listened or cared for the original. I come for Avi and Kevin. Or just Kevin now, I suppose. :(

If you want to hear a more mellow song, with incredible harmonies, watch the video for their ORIGINAL song, called Run To You. Be prepared for potential tears.
@dean15437 жыл бұрын
Hey NewGirl! First time watcher of your videos here. So to answer your question, they did record this in a studio but for the clarity and quality of microphones that only a studio can provide. There was no autotune used, its all them. The only editing done to the audio was the layering of the wind noises over the beat boxing in some parts of the song. Also they write out the songs themselves, they plan who does what when and where, they plan out the harmonies, and everything.
@doorran7 жыл бұрын
Their first Grammy. (they have 2 others.) filmed in their closet; edited in their kitchen. They do sing this LIVE and it sounds just as good. They do add some reverb in the studio on some of their Christmas music. but if they ever needed pitch correction Scott or Avi would have stopped them and started them over.. they are perfectionists. No auto tune.. ever... though they do try to duplicate the auto tune sound in some cases without an auto tuner. Try "Sing" or almost any Christmas piece (studio recorded). Oh they do have a studio version of "love lockdown" only because they wanted to redo it after they sang it on the Sing Off.

This was shortly after Sony had cancelled their contract. This was recorded at home, and the extent of the post production was combining the video/audio tracks from their single camera. The feeling that something must have been added is fairly common... It was commented on the first episode of Sing-Off that Kevin and Avi's performance was so good they almost felt that it was cheating.

First of all, ALL of the effects and sounds are done by them, but even if they did have some help in the studio, it doesn't make their music any less. They are amazing, their team is amazing. Some of the best editing you'll see in a lot of their videos. If you want to see a video by them that is similar to Daft Punk, check out Love Again. Its filmed in a similar style, and is also an original song by them. Enjoy. Quit worrying about studio, or not studio.....it doesnt matter.......LISTEN!
@Texastigerdigsdetects7 жыл бұрын
Its is all them...no autotune.. They don't need it.. They do perform in a studio, but there is still no enhancement or automated additions. Studio doesn't necessarily mean you are using equipment (beyond basic recording)...it just means that you are using very good microphones, in an acoustical environment...

Well they record it in the studio beforehand and lip sync during the MV shoot but every sound is done by them. No autotune, no pitch correct, no extra background instruments it's 100% them.
