The year was 1993 and it was a hot August day when my mama died. Later on when going through her meager possessions, i found a Merle compilation tape with his music from the early '80s. I was a heavy metal guy, but i knew my mom loved this Merle guy, so out of respect for her i took the tape and listened. I was blown away by the 'realness' of Merle and his music. Touched me to the core and was hooked. Surely hope to shake his hand in Heaven some day and say a simple thanks, maybe even with a tear or two. Love you Merle. Rest easy.

Yeah country music had been on a respirator for 20 years, we at least had Hag, Willie, George, Ray Price and a few more there still keeping the traditional sound out there....but, when Hag left, there is a huge void...I just pray with his music and so much more like his music are so accessible, that someone will step up. Until then, thank you for the uploads like HIll Billy and Amazon(that's where I spend most of my free time now)! Hag's song "Are we going down hill" pains me now to listen to it.....I truly feel we have been and are especially with country music. But, his last repeat of the chorus is changed up a bit to say that it isn't and we should not go down that path! So there is hope, always hope! :)

Back in the day, my friends and I rode our motorcycles all over the Western United States to attend all of the Hag's Concerts. Countless Country Vocalist's began leaving true Country behind hoping to draw a larger crowd, to sell mere records and tapes by going Country Rock and the like. Merle Haggard never done that, never even considered it... Many years ago, His Bus stopped at a Truck Stop here in Utah. He was handing out black & white pictures of himself, and sharing a Bottle with people in line. I'll never forget just how real, just how he fit right in with us common folks....

I absolutely love watching Willie and his kids. This song is such a gem. I'll love Willie til the day i pass away and beyond. Willie and John Prine have been my favorite singer/singwriters forever. On a side note, the first time I saw Willie was when I was 16 yrs old. Im 62 now. Of course, I was standing pretty close to the stage when Willie and I locked eyes. He politely smiled, tipped his hat, pointed at me and gently tossed it towards me. Unfortunately, his hat tumbled across my fingertips in to the hands of other eager fans. Willie looked at me, snapped his fingers as if to say damn! All was good tho ..I really appreciated the gesture. To Lukas, watching you watch your Dad is so genuine. Your encouraging quick smiles are heartfelt. I actually had goosebumps ..even on the back of my knees! 😂 I truly enjoy you Lukas ..you and your family are true treasures. ❤

At 84 yrs. old Merle is the best Country Western singer I have ever heard in my life. His songs told the story of his life. That's where real country western music comes from. These singers that have told their life in their music comes from the heart and soul. I can go back many years as a farm boy born just a few years before WWII from up country Maine and I listened to country music all my life going working in the barn. Rock & Roll was okay but there was too much Make Believe wording put into it. My check out time is not too far down the road at 84 yrs. old. I am former USAF, U.S. Army..Sgt. First Class..retired, Federal Law Enforcement Officer..retired..disabled, Nationally Certified Operating Room Technician..worked all kinds of surgical cases for 22 yrs...God Bless Country Western Music into eternity...Sgt. I saw and heard the Hag in OKC in 2006 or 2007 but I’ve loved him all of my adult life and I’ll be 84 in May. God broke the mold after him. R.I.P. AMJ in Fla

I’m not really a big fan of country music , but sometimes find that Merle Haggard is the only music that is left on this Earth that I can still stomach . I just regret discovering his music too late .
