Our home has a Goodman central AC unit running R22 that was installed in 1999. It has been working fine since we moved in here in 2013. When the time comes to replace it, I am simply looking for a solution that will cool our house but use less electricity. And if there is a program where I qualify for some tax credits or other benefits, I am interested.

My system is 30 years old. The furnace still works fine but the air conditioner was low again (freezing up ) at the end of the summer. It had last been topped off with R22 18 months before. So instead of adding more R22 in the spring, I decided to go ahead and get an R410A unit before the prices go up with the R32 units.

Sounds like all the rebates and tax breaks are geared to people replacing older equipment with higher efficiency products. What about people building a new home? Are there any incentives or tax rebates for new builds?

I wish the EPA wouldn't change refrigerants all the time. It just adds expenses for homeowners, because it is almost impossible to get the old refrigerant at a reasonable price. At this point, I just hope Trump abolishes the whole agency, but I doubt that will happen.

The EPA serves a critical service in ensuring that future generations can exist. It's a big, complex bureaucracy so naturally it has issues and inefficiencies. It will never be perfect, but in the complete absence of the EPA, we would demolish ourselves in a single generation. Fix it. Make it better. If your house has a bunch of problems, are you going to bulldoze it and just sleep on the dirt? I doubt it.

It looks like we will get hit by some pretty hefty price increases across the board due to the planned mexico 25% tariff (ie sales tax on consumers and importers not the foreign country) and 10% more on Chinese products. A massive amount of the components and completed equipment is now made in Mexico and China. Esp mini splits. So both industry and consumers should plan for significant price hikes as those taxes are passed on to end users. Domestic manufacturers will be able to raise their prices accordingly. Good for them but not for us contractors and homeowners

How and when do we get our rebate for installation of a new and way more efficient hvac system?
@JimmyDorff
@JimmyDorff 29 күн бұрын
When you file your federal income taxes, you claim a tax credit covering 30% of the total cost (including installation) of a qualifying heat pump, up to a maximum of $2,000 per year. System must be in your principal residence located in the United States. There are other rebate programs at the state or utility level which all have their own rules, but only one from the federal gov.

The inflation reduction act is replacing systems that are five years old. That is obscene. That is such a horrible use of tax payer money considering Goodman systems seem to be what most of these contractors are selling. Goodman does have a pretty decent failure rate but the cabinets and electrical components are the cheapest in the industry. I would never install Goodman products and charge what I charge installing Trane or Lennox but this is unaware homeowners are agreeing to. I think the future energy efficiency standards we are currently legally responsible to comply with need to be amended because if they're allowed to go into effect even you may find it difficult to meet these future global requirements. You didn't even discuss this. I do believe homes and buildings should meet certain energy efficiency standards but experts talking about this legislation are stating upgrading your home to meet these new standards could cost as much as 50 K which is crazy. Super insulating your home... Completely controlling infiltration... Equipment that will have to meet wild energy guidelines. This is the main reason I'm focusing on becoming an authority on ground source heat pump systems. This is exactly wwhere all of this is headed. You'd like to know what I thought, I'd like to know what you think.

Unless it's affordable, geothermal won't become the main seller in our nation. I'd say minisplits will become a bigger player here before that happens. That will move us closer to these diy systems most likely. The industry is going to look much different in 50 years, but not how some think it will.

@@NewHVACGuide Drilling a well is the best way to save assuming soil composition is cooperative. Once that loop is in the ground, the loop increases the intrinsic value of the home. The cost difference between an air source system and a water source system is no more that 15% but the COP difference is mind blowing. I work on commercial water source heat pumps in commercial buildings all the time. They performed so well it is what caused me to take a closer look. I do agree mini splits and VRF's are going to be huge in the future as well though. I love this field. refrigeration is the beautiful side of physics. Take care

My A/C system replaced 6 months ago (15 SEER) has a 3 ton Daikin condenser and a Goodman air handler; it cost $ 25 K including financing. Cross my fingers!
@MechanicsAndCarpentry369
@MechanicsAndCarpentry369 29 күн бұрын
@@bobboscarato1313 It'll probably operate dependably but the system warranty on the condenser and air handler are voided. The condenser is roughly $3800.00... the air handler is $1000.00 max... Miscelallaneous costs for materials, $700.00 max... Labor for an experienced installer... at $40.00 per hour $320.00 and $25.00 per hour for an experienced helper, $200.00, that's $6020.00... We'll say 6200.00 to play it safe, that contractor earned $18,800... He financed the interest, I'll be generous and say $1000.00... Insurance and related overhead, I'll be generous again and say $1000.00. That contractor made $16,800.00 off of one crew working one day. Think about that... That contractor earned 4 months average take home pay in one single day. I could never do that to someone. This is the type of contractor Josh should be warning you about but he may insist you got one hell of a deal. This is exactly why I seek to go back into business again. I'd beat this contractors bid every day of thew week and install a matched Trane or Lennox system. Goodman is the cheapest equipment a contractor can install which is exactly why most contractors sell the crap. This is why HVAC contractors have horrible reputations. Does Josh think this is a great price? Ask him. I'd be curious since his career here is spent warning customers to beware of shady contractors. This is a text book example of shady.

Deflation is a very real possibility in our future. I think it could actually be a positive thing in the end. Deflation pressures occur all the time and it is a viable way to make things a little more affordable again. An inability to afford to purchase is what actually triggers it from what I've read.
@NewHVACGuide
@NewHVACGuide 29 күн бұрын
Deflation is happening in other countries. But many of those countries have an issue with GDP per capita. With the US population growth due to immigration, that shouldn't affect us in the same way.
@MechanicsAndCarpentry369
@MechanicsAndCarpentry369 29 күн бұрын
@@NewHVACGuide I get what you're saying but GDP figures in the US the past 4 years were based on Government spending. And believe it or not when meaningful deflation occurs in our economy it's used as an opportunity to print money without it affecting prices. Honest to God, Deflation cycles are a great way of printing money with it directly impacting the value of the dollar immediately and it doesn't effect the tax payer consumer. Look into this. Don't allow anyone to sway you. Always do your own research.

Florida has been brutally hot or I would go without as I'm on a fixed income...If tariffs happen (and we and other countries have been threatened by tariff charges, I may be in real trouble financially and health. )Breathing is important....Personally, we are going down hard, across the board if djt is being truthful. There's a lot of talk about Trump's tariffs going to cause an increase in prices of products imported to the US. But Trump had tariffs during his first administration, and we had low prices of products, including fuel. I believe what drove up the prices of products under the Biden administration was his high taxes of fuel, which caused a higher cost of transporting products. I believe Trump will bring back down the prices of energy, including fuel.
@newguy6935
@newguy6935 21 күн бұрын
The only reason fuel prices were lower under Trump was because the Saudis were engaging in a market share war. They lowered their prices so low it started putting many oil producers out of business. It got so bad that producers were literally paying wholesalers to take the oil off their hands. It was crazy. I remember this because I trade stocks and always keep my eyes on the markets. Oil producers eventually asked Trump help them and Trump responded by threatening to halt the arms deal to the Saudis. The Saudis complied and oil prices went back up. Btw.. we are the world's largest producer and exporter of oil now but that doesn't mean the price we pay for gas will be lower. Why? Because the bulk of the oil we produce (light crude, through fracking) can't be refined in our refineries. That is why we export so much and also explains why we still import so much. The oil we import is heavy crude which is the only kind of oil our refineries can refine. Trump can "Drill baby, drill" all he wants but it isn't going to help because we mostly drill (or frack) light crude that gets exported. The only thing that will lower our prices is if the Saudis engage in another market share war - ie, flood the markets with heavy crude. They started doing that a few months ago and may continue but, who knows? They are probably trying to be more careful about it this time. Also... Biden did not raise taxes on oil.
