Just in case anyone is wondering, the 6th girl (Heeso) isn't going to be a new member, she is probably actually Park Jihu who acted as On-jo in the popular netflix series, All Of Us Are Dead. It's not confirmed but it's probably her because her facial features are very similar to those of Jihu

Ditto is about a girl, Ban Heesoo (반희수), who is a big fan of New Jeans. She has no other friends, so she forms a parasocial relationship with the idols. However, the only way she can interact with them is through the media that the idols publish, here metaphorically shown as a camera. Her friends only exist when she views them through the video camera; meanwhile, everyone else thinks she's a crazy weirdo. One day, she falls in love with a boy, and is faced by a choice, to continue living in her imaginary world with her idol "friends", or to enter the real world and attempt an actual human connection. The breaking of the camera symbolises her making the latter choice: she abandons NWJNS, and takes a walk with a flesh-and-blood boy. When she grows up, she finds the camera among her old possessions, and remembers the idols that gave her so much warmth and comfort in her youth. And instantly, as if they have never left, they are there, any time she wants to see them, this time on her own terms, as an adult, rather than as a lonely kid. There are other theories, and one great thing about art is that people are free to interpret things as they do. But this has some confirmation from the director. Also, a telling hint: Ban Heesoo is not a random name; it is pronounced very similarly to "Bunnies", the name of NWJNS fandom. As a brilliant marketing move, Ban Heesoo has her own KZbin channel; check it out if you are interested. It is a bit creepy though. You haven't seen OMG yet so I won't talk about it, but I'll just say it is a flip-side of this story. They are conceptually connected. I haven't been this mind-blown in a while.

I think it’s definitely about parasocial relationships. Kpop is so unique in how much access we as fans have to idols. It really feels like they’re our friends and we invest so much of our time into them, but at the end of the day, we don’t actually know them. All the while, life is going on around us and we could be missing out on real life connections because of that invested time in idols we love, but don’t know. The girl in the video seems to have gone through that and then eventually grew out of being their fan and is reminiscing on the group that meant a lot to her. I think the “official” interpretation from the company was that this was supposed to be a sweet representation of the relationship between the group and their fans, but it honestly feels SO sad. Like I literally had tears the first time I watched these.

It's bittersweet. It is sweet in the way that as kids parasocial relationships like this actually do have influence and can be a coping mechanism for feeling alone. But at some point a fan has to move on and live life with the people who are really around them. But when she's older she looks back on the films and remembers what she had imagined and how she should be able to enjoy what she likes while still being realistic about life.

This is the bit of his interview where he says : Q: What story did you intend with 'Ditto'? A: Every relationship has an end. I wanted to discuss the fact that every idol-fan relation ends with an end and the meaning of that. I was concerned how the audience would take it, but I thought it was time idol fandom is mature enough to enjoy realistic narratives like these. And so I talked about that end. It seemed like the message resonated with a lot of people and enjoyed it so I was happy. Because this doesn't apply neccessarily to just NewJeans and Bunnies. It's a story that works for idols, fans, or fans of something else completely.

Ditto's MV depicts the relationship between kpop fans and kpop idols. In short, the girl whose face we do not see in the video, that is, the girl who made the video, represents a kpop fan, and NewJeans are her idols. Idols are real but they are never with you. If you get attached to them, you will forget the people who are with you. Those next to you will be a happy memory and even if your idols are not with you, your life will be. Or your idols will be your happy moment and the people next to you will be your life. That's what NewJeans wants to tell in this MV🤍

Yeah the initial dancing choreography as well as the bgm when they are in the Gym before the Woah woah... kick in, is actually OMG song and choreography which kind of like making an easter egg pre-released debut before they release OMG MV. In OMG they even got some unused footage from Attention MV as well, it is gonna be fun to dig deeper in that MV. That missed call from Minji to Heesoo in Ditto is also feature in OMG MV through Hanni perspective (weird right? why from Hanni perspective, you will know when you watch OMG, so I don't spoil anyone who haven't watch OMG yet).

so it's basically side A is the time when she (haesoo) think that the 5 members is her bestfriend and they all are real, but in a side B she (haesoo) realize that they are (5 member) isn't real and just her imaginary friend so she (haesoo) want to forget all the memories. the deer represent the 5 members, the 5 members comes to haesoo's life simply because nobody's close with haesoo and she (haesoo) has no friend cuz everyone thinks that haesoo is weird because she always act like shooting nothing (in haesoo preference she shooting the members), but when she realize that the 5 members is just her imagination she try to life normal and yeah finally the boys (haesoo's crush) falling love with her and they in a relationship, so the deer (members) go away from haesoo's life simply because they job to make haesoo happy is over.

Theory 1. Ban Heesoo's (girl recording new jeans) cast represents a car accident Newjeans died and she was the only survivor. but Heesoo is in denial of Newjeans death and continues to film them as if they were still there through her imagination. the deer is a reminder of the car crash and her breaking the camera symbolizes her moving on. Theory 2. Ditto is about the relationship between kpop stans and idols; Ban hee soo whose name sounds like bunnies (nwjns fandom names) symbolizes stans. stans often focus on their idols and disregard their personal life and what is happening around them, as Heesoo continues to flim NewJeans she fails to realize that they are pure imagination and are not actually there; showcasing how fans create memories of them watching and interacting with idol content often forgetting that they don't personally know idols and therefore should not base their whole life on people they may never meet. after hee soo breaks her camera she walks away with a guy from her school(most likely a love interest), it shows how fans should also move on with their life rather than give up their life growth for kpop.

i think the original interpretation of the music video is about the parasocial relationships between idols and fans. if you watch omg music video which is an continuation and their new song you would get it more because we see the point of view of them as idols and the parasocial relationship with us. i do get that maybe you wouldn’t get the original interpretation if you aren’t in the fandom but i’m not a fan fan of them and i lowkey got it but it does make sense considering someone calls her in the mv and you wouldn’t get the call thingy unless you know about their communication app with fans

As others have commented there isnt a 6th member joining, the girl behind the camera and watching the video on the small TV is called Ban Heesoo, played by actress Park Ji-hu , who plays Nam On-jo in "All of Us Are Dead". Ban Heesoo has her own YT channel with 19 videos, mostly clips of Ditto footage but there are 3 Ditto dance practices there too . The videos are nearly all dated from 1998 and 1999 indicating its past old footage from 24 years ago (the last 2 posted are dated 2023). Nearly all the videos have a message posted by Heesoo in Hangul but there are comments which translate them. Some of the messages relate to Ditto and some are connected to OMG also. The boy Heesoo focuses on in some shots is actor Choi Hyun-wook who was in "Taxi Driver", "Racket Boys" and "Twenty five Twenty One". There are also 2 Korean celebs in OMG MV . Without giving away too much, one of those celebs had New Jeans on his YT/Twitch livestreams just after OMG was released. Its a 90 minute very friendly chat/interview/games stream. He is "Calm Down Man" Lee Mal Nyeon. He and Joo Woo-jae chat with them and at the end draw each NJ member in webtoon style. They are all amazing drawings!

The female and the Male are both actors. But what’s great is how many different interpretations you can get. My first impression was that she chose the boy over NJ, thus losing their friendship and moving on, as in the scene where she’s crying one of the members is calling her and she’s ignoring it, now all these years later she’s alone. NJ have each other and the guy was a guy. She lost her friends for a guy. And then lost the guy. She comes back for the memories of what she should have kept. Her friends. But I think it’s more about the fans. She’s envisioning them as her friends and they’re not really there. There’s alot of love and happiness there but it’s not tangible. She sees them writing on her cast and she paints one of the members nails. But there was nothing on her cast and her nail was painted instead. She ultimately decides that although she loves NJ she has to live in reality, and thus drops the camera and goes with the guy. Her coming back years later and NJ still being on the tape even though it was broken just shows that all she has to do is go onto KZbin or tv and reconnect with her girls. That’s just me. I think the deer represents reality. Like this is real.

Hear me out, maybe… shes not recording them. Shes watching them through the camera, at the places they were recorded. I don’t see a lot of people bringing up this point so just to quickly rant. Back in the year 2000 there was a movie released in Korea called Ditto and the concept of the movie was basically about a boy and girl talking and getting to know each other but not in person, they were communicating the whole time through a radio. Later on the movie reveals that both our main characters were living in different times, one in 1979 and one in the year 2000. This explains why there are two versions of the choreography and why the only person who could see them was Ban Heesoo. The camcorder was the device linking the year 1998 to the year 2022 because yknow… most of Newjeans weren’t even alive in 1998. They definitely brought this concept to a whole new level though by also being able to liken it to parasocial relationships and Ban Heesoo being Bunnies and all that.
