The full extent of Hurricane Helene's devastation is becoming increasingly clear as heartbreaking stories emerge from once-peaceful towns across southern and central Appalachia.
A barrage of devastating images has now flooded in from North Carolina, capturing the scale of the destruction caused by what some call "biblical" flooding.
In Avery County, a harrowing video provided by Vlado Novakovic showed his home being swept away in Newland by the powerful currents Friday, underscoring the catastrophic nature of the disaster residents are facing.

This is my hometown. It was hit very hard by Helene. Unfortunately, the high country hasn't and will never get the coverage it deserves/needs. Everyone is so focused on Asheville (yes, Asheville got hit hard and needs help too) but these small communities need a lot of help too!

Thanks for seeing us high country folk up here, agreed, the coverage is so minimal. Everything is about the Biltmore and arts districts in Asheville, which are awful, but dang, my friends house is completely gone from a landslide in valle crucis and we can’t even access ours by car in Boone.

People don’t just need food up here, but they need generators to run water pumps, shop vacs and tools to help others. Not everyone has the funds to go out and by a nice generator or any of those tools needed to save a house or property from tree, flood, mid or rock damage.

They had many extra supplies - food, water, etc. Their ENTIRE house is GONE - Including all of its contents, supplies etc. They are fortunate to get out alive. Their home, contents, vehicles - all gone. Preparations are great, but do no good if you lose your house, etc.

This is why I moved far away from the water, elevation 100 feet now, not the previous 9-11 inches of Newport News, Va. The waters of a river are no less hungry than the ocean, it will grab and take what it wants…it will stay this way without improving…so plan accordingly.

We went through the same thing in August with hurricane Beryl in S.E. Texas We had water but no electricity for 6 days. We had a small window unit that was a God send. Yall really got hit hard and I hope things work out for everybody. Have the Feds helped at all?

Yep, it's that hurricane spray that's made in communist Chi-na. It is shipped over in the containers with Harbor Freight tools, and sprayed by Iranian illegal immigrants trained in our own flight schools. Come on America you certainly need better building codes which can save property, investment and save lives. I would call upon the USA to build with concrete blocks and steel and not with boards. send your engineers and builders to the Caribbean and especially Jamaica to see how houses are built using concrete blocks and steel.
