Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry has announced that the world’s only remaining population of Javan rhinos has increased to 74 individuals in Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP).
The current count is the result of data collected through the end of August by park officials and represents an increase from 72 individuals reported in the last survey, including 2 new calves. Ten years ago, there were fewer than 50 Javan rhinos in UKNP, but with the park's conservation efforts, the rhino population has been gradually increasing with at least one new calf every year since 2012.
Javan rhinos, one of five rhino species worldwide, are found only in Indonesia’s UKNP where the population appears to have stabilized, largely because they are guarded by Rhino Protection Units (RPUs). There has been no poaching in UKNP in more than 20 years.
Cameras positioned throughout the park, part of a monitoring program funded by the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), capture rhino movements and assist in tracking new births for population counting. Video released today captured two new mother and calf pairs.
“Photos and videos of Javan rhinos are rare, but this year has been unprecedented with these being the third amazing video released,” said Nina Fascione, IRF’s executive director. “New births and the increasing population of this critically endangered species is the result of the commitment of government and park officials to the protection of the Javan rhino and its habitat.”
The new calves spotted are one of each male and female. The male has been named Luther and the female was named Helen. There are now 40 males and 34 females in UKNP.
World Rhino Day is Tuesday, September 22, 2020. “World Rhino Day is a day we come together around the world to celebrate rhinos with awareness, education and critical support,” said Fascione. IRF has published a schedule of events and activities at rhinos.org/world-rhino-day/.

Beautiful! Am currently making a miniseries on these animals for World Rhino Day, and this is some great news to incorporate in the Javan Rhino video. I hope they'll bring more attention to the worldwide effort to preserve these animals. :)

I love that positivity, but rhino population is really really slow to grow, including javan rhino. In 1930s their population is just around 30 or less, and now their population can only reach 70s with no disturbtion from human :) I hope they grow more quickly, but considering their growth rate, I will be happy if they can grow to just 100s in the next 20 years 😅

@@mohamadhafidal-ahyar2253 growth is often exponential so the rate is going to grow. Perhaps some can be moved to Panaitan island

@@mohamadhafidal-ahyar2253 Esperemos que para dentro de 60 años la población ya sea estable, para así poder iniciar la reintroducción hacia otros territorios fuera de Indonesia.

That’s looks like an adult female Javan Rhino with a little calf just a few months old so it depends on it’s mother for 2 years and it can deafened itself and maybe get calves of it’s own if the rare elusive calf is a female she would get her own calves
