In 1905, there were only 75 Greater one horned rhinos left in the world. At that time, the Sumatran Rhinos numbered a few thousands, even found all the way from NorthEast India, Myanmar into Malaysia and Sumatra. Today, after a century of conservation, Greater one horned rhinos have recovered to 4000 individuals while the Sumatran and Javan rhinos are on the edge of extinction. It's a sad reality.

It's no longer true the Javan rhinoceros is increasing in numbers. I just read an update on Sumatran and javan rhino populations by Margaret Kinnaird, an internationally noted wildlife authority. Recent reports indicate the Javan rhinoceros has completely disappeared from parts of its range within Ujung Kulon NP and its numbers are now lower than in decades. That is, if it's population had been reportedly accurate, which has been called into question. The Indonesian govt in recent yrs has deprioritized conservation and the rhinos and other species of wildlife have now apparently been written off by the Indonesian govt. The sumatran rhino has not been seen in Southern Barisan Mtns in at least a decade and is believed to be extinct there. There are no new conservation priorities coming out of Jakarta. Everything is infrastructure growth and escalating deforestation to make room for oil palms. The Aceh govt is making plans to eliminate Gunung Leuser NP. That's Indonesia today.
