my fave reading slump technique is to go to the library & check out about 10 books with reckless abandon based solely on the vibes of the front cover (and maybe a quick skim of the first couple pages) and then DNF liberally as soon as I realize I'm not feeling it. it works great to get rid of that feeling of worrying about whether you'll like the book, and with 10 different picks there's usually at least a couple gems in there!! i've found a couple all-time favorite books in the world w this method actually haha

omg this is brilliant. Just the other day I was screaming like a banshee because the library here sorts books by author and not genre. The old one had genre and within genre sorted by author but now there are text books about weird 1800 politics next to smutty romance... But!! If I just randomly do your method, I might find some unexpected gems. I'm gonna try this tomorrow!

I have read Twilight *SO* many times in the last couple years because it's basically comfort food in book form, and it's the only thing I've found that has a 100% success rate for breaking me out of a slump. It's become such a meme in my partner's family that you can tell what kind of year I'm having based on how many times I read Twilight.

I feel like this applies to TV shows or youtube videos as well. I've been reading more the last two months, but my viewing has been almost strictly rewatching Community, Gilmore Girls, and Jenna Marbles videos on youtube and not much else, but I've also experienced the reverse, where I'm watching new and fun shows and enjoying my time in that way, but my reading suffers. I feel like its a sign of early burnout, and just letting yourself selfoothe and comfort yourself with something familiar is helpful when you're tired or feeling overwhelmed. I plan on rereading more of my favorite books next year to kind of cleanse my reading pallet as I go

@@elkq0 I can't with most books because the plot is spoiled and knowing what's ahead really pulls me out of the immersion, but the fact that Twilight had very little actual plot to begin with (topped with a HEAVY dose of nostalgia) makes it a lot easier for me to consume repeatedly. I'm reading it purely for comfort and the vibes, and since I'm not looking for anything else, it works.

A book in an interesting format that I absolutely adore is Murder Your Employer: McMaster’s Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes. When I consume large amounts of this kind of content, I'm in a constant reading slump and can only digest audiobooks at best (and only while I'm doing something else) because reading itself seems like an impossible task 😅 I'll definitely check out the Truly Devious series! A little thing that helps me is to actively engage with the book I want to read (but heads up, this absolutely won’t work with everyone). Specifically, I keep my book journal next to me while I read and record random information, like main characters, general summary of events, quotes I like, things I hate, things I like, things I think were inspired by other things, etc. This does I guess “homework” the reading experience, but I’ve found in the middle of a slump it’s so helpful to me because I don’t like leaving pages in my book journal half finished, so at worst I’ll finish most of it and then describe why I DNFed it and whether I’d try it again

spec-fic novellas are my go to for getting out of a reading slump. You get a quick blast of a story with high level of novelty to keep you engaged, that usually hinges on a really chewy concept that will get your brain ticking again. I think its always best to avoid doorstop books because you'll burn out.The book that helped me release this was my back door into reading again was Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh- it got my brain craving books again after nearly 4 years of not reading any published fiction

I got back into reading last year so I’ve been actively working to avoid a slump. But I also know this is a bad time of year for me on a number levels. So when I hit a wall early this month, I was disappointed. But I took a step back - returned my library books and cancelled my holds. I tried a shorter book but it didn’t grab me. So I DNFd and gave it some time until I felt like reading something. And I tried again with the Wayward Children series this week and I’m on book four. I think it’s important to take care of yourself and like you were saying - what and if you’re reading doesn’t mean anything about you as a person and your worth.

This is such a brilliant video, and as usual you deliver everything with such thought and sensitivity! I had two huge reading slumps in 2023 and was so mad at myself and felt so demoralised by seeing people smash through 10 books in a week or something ridiculous when I could barely get through 20 pages a month. But the context of these reading slumps were that I had 3 very close family bereavements in the space of 10 months... And I was expecting to find joy somewhere?! I was just about managing my work and social commitments, and to put the pressure on myself to find joy when I'd lost people I loved is, objectively, a brutal standard to have held myself to. My go to slump busting technique is to read an Agatha Christie novel. Short, low stakes, formulaic mystery that I know I'll want to try to solve! Also, I've only recently found your channel and am already obsessed with it and wish we were friends ✌🏻

You have this odd sense of putting everything I could ever think into a sentence before I even have to ask and its quite refreshing

I would actually love to hear your thoughts on the Ali Hazelwood's books you've read 😍 They are the perfect dose of serotonin and dopamine that my brain needs sometimes to get out of a reading slump, along with a good reread of a Mariana Zapata slow burn novel 😂

@mousegrey6747 no other books have given me the same rush that those last 40 pages of a good slow burn MZ classic!

graphic novels are my go to because they’re so easy to get through, it makes it easier to start (and stick with) something else

I will read every single Ali Hazelwood book and I will LOVE IT. Her book got me out of a 5 year slump and got me back into reading!! I just have to space them out since their plots are so similar!
