The word "special" is overused, but this performance really is special. From her flawless phrasing, the gorgeously weathered tone of her voice, Brandi Carlyle showing supreme sensitivity and class in guiding when needed and stepping back when not, to the fact that Joni wrote this when she was 23 as if sending a message to her future self. Doesn't get any better than this.

There is a poignancy in this song that was not there in Joni's younger years. She sings it as if she is speaking to a grandchild about a life long lived and passing on all of the misconceptions about life that she had in her younger years. A timeless song by a timeless singer. Love you Joni Mitchell!

My wife died on the 14th the day before our 52 wedding anniversary after a battle with cancer. We both loved Joni Mitchell, her music was the sound track to our first years of married life. I mourn my wife but this has taken me back to those first days when all that mattered was loving each other and dreaming of the future. Joni, thank you for bringing back those memories.

To everyone saying that she’s lost it, she shouldn’t be there: how much guts does it take for a 79-year-old Joni Mitchell to get up on stage, knowing that she’ll be compared to her 25-year-old self? That’s what performing is about: showing up and making it work with everything you’ve got. Who cares if her voice isn’t perfect? Her heart is.

It was at this festival in 1966 that Judy Collins introduced Joni Mitchell to her audience. Collins was the first to cover and record Both Sides Now and made Mitchell's song a huge hit. To me, what makes this song and Mitchell so iconic was that she had as a 23 year old the ability to write with such profound insight what for most us is only gained over many years and realized by 79 year olds, like her .... now. I first heard her sing it as a 25 year old. I marveled at its insights then and as a 79 year oldster in a few weeks ... still.

12/30/22 @ 10:30 AM: I first experienced this song as a young boy in the sixties. The first version was sung by a youthful Judy Collins. I had yet to hear the songwriter’s version. Having heard the story behind the lyrics from Joni at a concert at a concert in the early seventies, added many layers with more than a little gravitas and emotion. I’m a nutshell, Joni Mitchell is a treasure!

You're not alone Caelan. I'm 61, and I heard this song first when I was 12 years old. It grabbed me then, it's so strongly emotional... Joni is an angel sent hear to make us feel deeply. I nearly died in my forties from a disease that nearly killed Joni (Morgellon's Syndrome). Whatever it is that is hurting you, time will help you heal and move past it. We would not know, nor understand beauty without hardship. That is life. Please know you're not alone... we all celebrate, and mourn our way through this gift of life. Please don't give up. There's always another beautiful experience waiting for you just out of sight, around the bend.

when I was 16 I discovered Joni's BLUE album...then all the others...would sit in my room ...alone and read the lyrics on album....played the vinyl all the time....my mother...a therapist would tell my father "she must be depressed"...lol...no, I was 16, 17 and 18 and recognized a true poet ....you will get through this trying time...i promise you honey....you are at a crossroads...you will figure out life. do what you want...not what others tell you to do...

Thank you to Brandi Carlisle for having the idea of doing this after she had been a part of the Joni Jam sessions. What I found especially moving about this was Wynonna Judd wiping tears away as she sang backing vocals. I read an interview with her yesterday and she said how special it had been to be asked to be part of this. She mentioned that she sang this song at her 8th grade graduation and how it reminded her of her mom. Very touching.

The first time I watched this, me and my girl were uncontrollably in tears. The first few notes moved us to a certain calmness that only Joni could bring. Kudos to you Ms. Mitchell. May you live longer and share your music with the next generation.

You know she's not a dyke on a bike, with a mic in a GAY (not lesbian) bar singing karaoke.

One of the most perfect songs ever written, and the best performance ever. Amazing how someone as young as 23 could write a song with such maturity.

In her Autumn years, she took a perfect song she made iconic and transformed it into something absolutely magical. Only Joni Mitchell could pull that off! A beautiful moment in music history, captured for all time on KZbin.

I remember my 22 yr old self listening to this song for the first time in SF and of course, loved it. Now have listened to it for my entire 73 yr old self...and surely l let the tears flow...from the beauty of her 78 rendition, which is now my favorite, and l have put in my will to be sung at my celebration of life. Clouds illusions that l recall... this life is precious, thank you Joni.
