Brilliant, and super clear - thank you. And a well justified warning to buying from companies that say that they can 'design' a crossover for you on paper. Yes; I was offered this service once, and politely declined - shockingly, from a very well-known UK parts supplier - and this has only served to cast doubt on the robustness of research they invested in their kit designs that often run into 4 figures - result; anyone asking my advice will be told to stay away!

This guy clearly knows his stuff. I'd love to hear more, and I'd love to see some videos discussing building a DIY speaker as well as some general speaker design!
@NickP3335 жыл бұрын
Please let Danny speak for himself, as he is obviously a very polite individual. Nothing wrong with that. Ron, you should absolutely do a build and test of these speakers! That’d be awesome, man. Another great vid, Danny. That new GR Research speaker looks absolutely phenomenal! Seems to have top notch design features and frequency response.

It's interesting , when you see what the senior designer at Harbeth has to say , he uses software first to model then builds the actual model and makes minor changes. Harbeth's entire design phylosophy is based on making a human voice as close as possible to the real thing, I think it's a valid approach ! The other would be to use digital crossover's and filters to determine were the best mating point's are and how the filters used influence the sound , then build the physical to that model. Of course yrs of experience in picking components and certain filter types is not something everyone has. Not to mention shelves full of different values !! Danny's aproach is absolutely valid , see what the driver are doing first !!

For next topic could you discuss the use of "Notch Filters" and "All Pass" filters? I heard of using all pass filters for correcting phase issues. Just curious as to what your thoughts are.

Could you show how to draw up a CROSSOVER PARTS LAY OUT based on a crossover schematic? That would be very helpful for those of us who have never done it before. Thanks!
@warpspeed98774 жыл бұрын
Dear Danny, how do you feel about using an external digital Xover to establish the behaviour of the drivers and speaker chassis, voice the speaker to your liking and then recreate the thing with an analog Xover?

What’s your take on Active crossover like miniDSP Love watching your videos
@dannyrichie97434 жыл бұрын
The MiniDSp has some power tools built into it. But on a performance level it can suck the life out of the music. It should never be used in a mid-fi level or high end level design of any kind.

Great videos about crossover. Do you have a database of measurements, drivers and crossovers that you have put together over time? Im looking for data for Avance Concrete 170!

I also looked and did not see them, can we get a link in the description?

It is a new model that I have not added to our website yet. You can see the thread on the development here: www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=160647.0 And measurements on it here: www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=160647.msg1729409#msg1729409 And there are some finished pics and pricing on page 6.

excellent Danny, i like about everything about those speaker. i usually find things i do not like visually or compromises to design but these checks all the right boxes :) size wise its at the upper limit i can fit in my setup, a 5" woofer version would be nice, especially since the depth is almost 15". And yes i would like to see tutorial on build and a review. cravings for sealed box design for sure :)

Would there be any advantage to essentially making a bandpass filter to lower a tweeters output vs using resistors?
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
A band pass filter would only be used if filtering both ends of its range. In other words if you rolled off the top end or filtered the top end also then that could be considered a band pass filter. But 99% of the time we aren't filtering the top end of a tweeters range.

Another great video. Liked to hear about this design for placing them near the front wall and to enhance imaging having this constraint into consideration. Are omni directional speakers (like the A/V-O) also good for that?
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
Any true omni style speaker needs to be placed at least three feet away from any wall.
@merlingarnett36135 жыл бұрын
Nice design. How close to the front wall can you still get good sense of depth to soundstage.
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
It is hard to answer a how close and be good type of question. But this design will offer a better sense of depth and sound stage than a typical boxed design.

I’d love some instruction on making a loud active monitor, using external crossovers and amplifiers. I’d like to construct a high-resolution dynamic system for listening Metal and Industrial music. Priority is on listening for pleasure and not on mixing or pro applications.

I would recommend Hypex Amps multichannel and miniDSP to build your system

Harris tech...is this the bass box pro stuff... www.ht-locus.com/ I use a much more sophisticated synthetic crossover designer that uses frd and zma files as well as acoustic offsets that give much better designs. Are you simply stating that one should not use just electrical or that you must use electrical plus other parameters such as driver positioning/ baffle dimensions/ and speaker sensitivy etc. If your just using simple crossover calculator wouldn't this be equivalent to flying blind with just electrical????
