SUE THEM! This issue almost happened to me. State troopers came to our home at 1am. I was single but engaged then living with my little brother. My now husband was my fiancé and visiting. He’s white. He was still sleeping upstairs. These officers came barging through t the door questioning my 18 year old brother. He was terrified. They kept asking for some dude, we’d never heard of before. They forced their way in, refused to show their warrant and wouldn’t accept that we didn’t know who it was. We explained that no one by that name lived there. They insisted on searching the house threatening us and it was escalating. Until they asked who else lived here. I told them my fiancé was upstairs and I called for him You should have seen their faces when he walked downstairs. Like they saw a ghost. They were shocked to see he was a young white man with glasses. They quickly dropped the octave in their voices and all of a sudden remembered how to be professional and respectful. I was now the one shouting and not once did they threaten me. They asked for all our IDs and confirmed that none of us had the name they wanted. They revealed the warrant which didn’t have any name we recognized. And then my husband and I asked for their badge numbers. They started hemming and hawing…. Just then, one of them from outside came in and whispered to the others and they left without a word. I was livid. It took an hour for me to calm down, I was so angry. And they ran away before I could get their info. My hubby convinced me to let it go. If not for my husband, things might have escalated and my brother who was then 18 but 6ft 3 a freshman in college could have been arrested and even me. We all have clean records. I am a nurse. This could have affected my professional license. Our police system is shameful. They need better training. It’s sad that my husband was my savior, not only because he’s my man, but because he’s white. We need better training and police reform. This is unacceptable. Stop using excessive force with black people. Stop treating us like criminals. I moved out of that home once we got married. But that was when my husband started to believe in racism.

This same thing happened to me and my daughter years ago in Marietta, GA, and after contacting lawyers and filing an official complaint, nothing was done. This was before smartphones and everything that is now in the news. I hope she sues and recovers for all of us.
