I am from chennai but working in banglore for the past ten years..these people are real hardworkers, people born in kgf are in high levels including ministers and senators in western countries., their tamil and english is awesome they had the best schools..but sad part is both Tn and karnataka govt abandoned this wonderful place and closed the mines..many migrated to banglore and still many of them still there hoping the govt will reopen the mines soon..Most of the people travel 3 to 4 hours to come to banglore for work and go back reach home by 10 and start again by early morning 5 am.the trains always filled with passangers with no place to stand..hope kgf see a goodfuture soon

Kolar name is believed to be originated from the Tamil word Kolaahalam (magizhchi) meaning "Grand" and "Joyful". To prove Tamil peoples dominance during BC's era in these places, 2 rivers that originates from the hills of Kolar are named as North Penner (Vada Ponnaiyar) and South Penner (Then Ponnaiyar), apart from the 3rd river Palar (because it looks like a milk while flowing). In Tamil Ponn-aar means "River of gold", these 2 Ponnaiyar rivers carries the gold sediments, and thus it is called so. Just imagine how our ancestors were, it is not the white men who thought us how to do mining nor we are less knowledgeable about the availability of gold in Kolar. The early Cholas extended their territory up to vengadam hills, the mining activity for gold is even intense till 5 CE. Later the medieval Cholas have great dominance on the entire Indian peninsula for nearly 300 years from 10 CE onwards (apart from extending their control till SE Asia due to their sea-faring abilities and maritime trade). Nannul the Tamil grammar was written in Kolar during Western Ganga vassal king Seeya Gangan. Many Tamil names for places are still in existence in and around Kolar and Bangalore region but in a corrupted form. Some of the examples: Vengalur (Bangalore), Veppur (Begur), Thaamiraikarai (Tavarekere), Korramangalam or Kottramangalam (Koramangala), ThiruMadaiwalagam (Madiwala), Kadukudi (Kadugodi), Nilamangalam (Nelamangala), Thumbailur (Domlur) because of more Thumbai flower grown their which is used to workshop Shiva, Maaliyur (Malur), Koodum-Malai (Kurudumale), Moola-vaayil (Mulbagal), Velliyur becomes Belliyur and later to Bellur a place near Kolar, Thaei-kal (Tekal) meaning rubbed stones, Ponnkundram (Hunkunda), Vedhamangalam (Bethamangala), Vemamangalam (corrupted form is Vemgal), Choladevanapalli (Solovenhalli), still many more... You see many of the places under Chola rule has "mangalam" as suffix, like that we have Satyamangalam, Vinnamangalam, etc.. in Tamil Nadu. The word "palli" is originated from Tamil word "pallam" or sometimes we say "palla thaaku" meaning "valley" surrounded by mountains. We can coin many place names with this "palli" as a suffix, example Thirucchirapalli and many more. For Kannada just change "pa" as "ha", we get "halli".
