What surprises me is that New Scientist have picked this up given the incompleteness of this research paper. It is like the assumption has been made and they have been looking for evidence to support it, which isn't really science. The paper is very light on detail as to how this oxygen has been split from seawater and looking at what information is contained, it doesn't make any sense and it is contradictory. Without further research and without peer review is it more likely that these things are producing oxygen (when other research found no evidence) or that there was a fault in the experimentation that introduced these anomalies?

Am a little puzzled about being 'surprised' by the discovery. I thought science was a process of discovering and investigating so why surprise. After all planet earth wasn't made/built by humans. Or are certain scientists making incorrect assumptions?
