I had no idea many people were dying from denied and delayed claims. I had no idea insurance companies were doing claim quotas. I had no idea UHC was making the most money by denying and delaying claims. I had no idea some insurance company employees were coming home crying because they were told to deny some claims by their supervisors. If we have to condemn Luigi's murder, we also should look very closely at all the facts that came out after the shooting... and how this industry is also closely connected to politicians, scratching each other's back at the cost of the lives of the people who elected them.

We need to not let this go. We need to not get distracted from the CORE ISSUE. For-profit health insurance is based on a fundamental conflict of interest. The more healthcare that is denied, the more profit these companies make. THIS IS THE ONLY ISSUE WE SHOULD BE DISCUSSING regarding this event. $450 BILLION dollars PER YEAR. ~68,000 deaths attributable to delayed, withheld, and lacking care PER YEAR. These private for-profit healthcare corporations are selling years of our life expectancy for as much money as they can extract from us. We pay more per capita for healthcare than any other nation on earth, yet we are consistently worse than 40th in life expectancy. Private, for-profit health insurance NEEDS TO END.

Our government structure and Congress’ deliberate actions prevent real democracy. Gerrymandering, the electoral college, barriers to voting, the extreme overrepresentation of small state voters. On top of that inherent unfairness, corporate donors like UHC purchase Congress. In effect, Congress’ allegiance is to business interests over voters in whose interest they are supposed to be acting. On top of THAT the media is purchased by corporations, and they immediately leap on any mention of healthcare reform to politicize it along partisan lines and kill systemic change. When a democratically elected Barack Obama tries to implement reform they fought him at every turn. Then despite all the public’s built up latent hostility towards the healthcare system somehow we didn’t even discuss it in the last election cycle. In the context of this corrupt, deeply disempowering, and pro-corporate environment it’s no wonder someone finally snapped.
