I work in a Secondary school in Australia. The same thing is happening here, as well as physically attacking teachers. Teachers are not trained or qualified to stop physical aggression. Nor are we trained or qualified to counsel students in appropriate behaviour and reaction to stress, tension or disagreements. When I was in school, this was the responsibility of parents to teach and model appropriate behaviour and how to deal with our emotions and not revert to physical violence. Teachers are leaving the profession in droves across the world due to the stress.

O M G - not all students that are physically violent have parents that are criminals. That is a very bad generalisation. Many students have parents who work hard and obey the law but don't teach or install discipline at home. Some parents both work long hours and aren't at home to monitor and mentor their children. By over generalising and saying these are the children of criminals, you're avoiding the real issues - ALL PARENTS NEED TO PARENT !

I’m a custodian at Bonnie Branch and this is the shit staff has to deal with on a daily basis. Kids always are fighting! A kid beat up a paraeducator this year…. Kid got a slap on the wrist (Paraeducator never returned) everyday for the past 6 years a kid is destroying school property might get one day of suspension, kids roam the halls last period instead of class for years now and nothing is done about it. This isn’t the Howard County I, teachers and parents grew up in. The school system is an absolute joke. I can’t wait to find another job!

The problems started in elementary schools.ask any elementary school teacher as politicians and admins have removed consequences and accountability. These parents can call school and complain and demand and they give into parents. We can’t hold 3rd graders accountable for ‘little things’ they grow into crimes in middle and high schools. This is everywhere even good neighborhhods. Good luck when no one will go into teaching.

In Australia, you cannot expel a student without having them suspended 25 times and a whole lot of paperwork, explaining what processes and supports you have put in place for that student. THEN you must swap - one expelled student for another.

I went to school through the 70s and 80s and have been teaching since the 90s. It's worse now, since remote learning. The students have no consequences and disregard authority and do what they like.

What we need is some kinda ranking system where kids can use that to then move on to fight other kids at different schools with similar ranking. Could turn it into a league or scholastic sport. It takes skills to scrap in them halls an win at a constant rate. Instead of penalizing we should be encouraging kids to fight, it build character and strength

@@objectivelyintellectual Are you a teacher or have kids? I know teachers from a few countries and the issue is consistent in many countries. Students no longer have a respect of authority and constantly challenge it, knowing that authority has limited consequences to issue. Back in the 90s and earlier, schools had more consequences (including caning and other physical punishments) to issue. These days, we can give lunchtime detentions - students don't attend - ring parents to advise of an after school detention and parents refuse to give permission for them to stay back. Suspensions don't mean anything because kids want to stay home. We need a minimum of 25 suspensions and a whole bunch of redtape paperwork, showing all the initiatives and support given to the student before we can expel. Then we have to swap our expelled student for an expelled student from the other school. Students know this and don't care about the consequences we can give them. As teachers, we've discussed going to the police and having them charged with an assault upon us and issuing a restraining order.

@@traceyholt8223 I do have children. Ranging from 10-21. All honor students, honor society, national society of high school scholars, etc. I’m a football coach so I am also a teacher. There are no flawed children, only flawed teachers. You sound bitter and scorned. If you feel that way, you should probably find another job. It’s teachers who feel like you that are the reason we are here. You go to work everyday hating the job you have to do and wonder why you can’t effectively do it. If they don’t respect you, it’s because you haven’t earned their respect. Probably because you have that archaic view that children should do what they’re told without question. It’s rebellion to this ideology that has produced what you see. This is the Information Age. These children don’t only need discipline. They need attention and genuine compassion. These children deal with a multitude of issues outside of your classroom. Your whole diatribe was about their behavior, not their capacity for learning. Earn their respect by genuinely caring about them, and you’ll see all those issues go away. I know, because I was once one of those students. It’s teachers with your perspective that gave up on me. Luckily I was strong enough not to give up on myself. In your current mindset, you’re doing way more harm than good to those children.
