Not really. He conflates two very important terms. "Bullet" and "round:. I am an older, armorer with 50 years experience. Even given the restraints of precious limited minutes of TV TIME, you MUST educate the viewer because 99.999% of "the great unwashed" use and say incorrect firearm terms. ie bullet vs a round of ammo.....and clip vs magazine. It would have taken 20 seconds to hold up a round of ammo and explain why it should NEVER be called a "bullet". A bullet is ONLY the projectile. A bullet mated with a brass cartridge case, gunpowder and a primer is a ROUND of AMMO. A round is also referred to as a cartridge. But never, ever a "bullet" The loops on a gun belt are AMMO loops, not BULLET loops. Just some VERY lazy vocabulary that any armorer I know would never fuck up. I would have said this: Cartridge: A unit of ammunition, made up of a cartridge case, primer, powder, and bullet. Also called a "round", or “load”. Sometimes incorrectly called a “bullet”. Cartridge case: The container for all the other components that comprise a cartridge. Sometimes incorrectly called a shell, shell casing, brass, or a hull. www.tncourts.gov/sites/default/files/docs/firearmshandout_1.pdf Another KEY TERM terms ALWAYS fucked up by Hollyweird, The Media and the Great Unwashed: Misfire. A MISFIRE is a FAILURE to fire a bullet out the muzzle of a gun. A malfunctioned cartridge that fails to discharge at all (dud), doesn't discharge promptly (hang fire), or only partially discharges (squib load) when being shot from a firearm. TERMS MATTER!!!!!!!! He managed to really fuck up the terminology. I would never hire this imprecise man.

Actually a pretty awful interview trying to excuse Alec Baldwin by not pushing the correct safety narrative that EVERYONE in the chain of custody of the firearm is OBLIGATED to physically and visually verify the state of the firearm. The fact the Baldwin is on record as refusing any kind of training due to his hate of the 2A and NRA only adds to his criminal culpability of criminal homicide and reckless endangerment.

I served with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and Baldwin came to the First Avenue Jail to film a movie because our jail had the real bars. I was in the Air-Force back in the eaelry 90's during Desert Storm. When I received my first gun training they taught us that. NEVER point a weapon at anything you dont intend to kill, even if its empty. If you just checking a gun out admiring it always point the barrel down to the ground. Ive been over family member's houses or friend's houses where they just purchased a gun and they showing it and passing it around to other people to check out and the people have the barrel pointed at someone while they looking it over. I immediatly get in their asses for that. :(

An experienced armorer was almost hired but he turned it down because the Producers budget cut too many corners. He said he needed an assistant and other things which Rust turned down. He said Rust was an accident waiting to happen. So they found a person to cut corners.

Firearms used for the purposes of film making, aren't toys. They should be treated like company property and never leave the security of the armorer when not being used to film. The guy they interviewed likely has this mentality, and is why he's never had an accident like this happen. I don't understand how people can be this careless with tools designed to kill human beings. Yes target practice is fun, but if you're using them for a particular job oriented purpose, they should only be used for that purpose. Its like stealing your employer's time to play video games in the background on company equipment while you're at the office. It should be treated in the same way.

@@JosephArata : Absolutely. Highly unprofessional behaviour. Baldwin is a producer and might find himself personally liable if it’s established that he knew what people were doing with these guns? I can understand the temptation of hobbyists, wanting to fire authentic classic weapons, but like you say, there’s this thing called, “professionalism,” which is why you don’t allow it. But I have to laugh when so many people are suffering from the Dunning Kruger Effect, writing, “I never fire a weapon without checking what’s in the gun personally. If I was in Baldwin’s place, I would have checked the gun myself.” To which I say, “NO YOU WOULDN’T!” Because if you did, you’ve just screwed the take and the armorer now has to take back the gun and reset it for safety and use in the scene! That’s literally her job! It’s tragic and probably a whole series of things that went wrong, as the case so often is with tragedies. But it does come down to her in the end, as she was hired to ensure the guns were used safely and she signed a piece of paper that gave her soul responsibility. I don’t want anyone to go to jail over this unless they truly deserve to, like if she totally ignored safety, got drunk or just played with the weapons all day? But, she doesn’t come across like that? Unless we’re looking at an episode Columbo where someone deliberately switched the bullet, hoping to murder someone, it’s all on her.

I would've started with what a live round looks like & how it works (primer -> gunpowder -> projectile -> target). & then said "here is a dummy round. Notice that it doesn't have a primer. Therefore it cannot be fired." & here is a blank. It has a primer so it can make a pop & produce a plume of smoke but it has no projectile so it can't cause a bullet wound.

I’ve done some old west mock gun fights shooting blanks and we were instructed to NEVER actually point at someone. We were at least 15-20 ft apart and aimed about three feet to the side. As a firearms enthusiast it will be interesting to see how this turns out. At our matches we follow strict loading and unloading protocols and if you stick to the safety rules as you mentioned there is really no excuse for these kinds of so called “accidents”.

Most of it is BS and just trying to whitewash Baldwins negligence to check the firearm (one of his jobs) and failure to follow firearm safety rule number ONE (assuming that was even an accident) Rule number ONE and baldwin knew it - NEVER point firearm at anything or anyone unless you intend to shoot it. Pointing firearms directly at anyone is strictly forbidden even on movie sets - no exceptions. As a combat veteran who served as a range safety officer after returning from Vietnam I am impressed with this interview. While many details of gun safety were not discussed this was the clearest explanation of the gun safety process I have heard to date. The journalist did her job by asking excellent questions then allowing the expert, who had no conflict of interest, to respond. This is the way the MSM should conduct their interviews.

I think this is exactly what we're looking at here. It's just so beyond unprofessional that I still can't really comprehend it. I'll check my firearms 10 times before I even hand one to a trusted (military background) friend of mine, and for the record I HAVE cleared a live round before while checking a gun to hand to a friend, which was a major oh-shit moment. Then again, we were just handling them, all of us STILL knew to never point them or pull the trigger at/near anything you're not willing to destroy - this is why those CORE firearms safety rules work together - there are so many levels of 'not doing stupid shit'. This incident should literally be impossible. Forget all of this talk about the armorer (who was an unprofessional idiot) but Mr. Balwdin was ultimately in control of that firearm, and ultimately pulled the trigger. I personally have no experience or knowledge regarding how the US film industry operates or what standard safety protocol entails etc so, I can't really say much other than that I personally feel that everyone working in the film industry ideally should be able to go to work every day knowing their working environment provides them with reasonably safe working conditions. No one should have to show up every day afraid or worried about whether or not corners are being cut that may compromise safety, or whether or not their production's specific safety protocols are being followed properly at all times, etc. The utmost safety of everyone in front and behind the cameras should always be the #1 priority at all times without exception. Hmm, more like someone that relays how it should be done. Hindsight is 20/20. Bryan says that we only works with a small number of company for low budget movies. But what does he do when you as an armorer don't get the time or means to perform you job in a correct matter? You walk away from a paying job risking a bad reference (you are as good as you're latest project) or do you make the most of it? If you're doing a job long enough without incidents it's easy to become overconfident and think you can handle it anyway. Probably the same reason why should thought she could perform two roles (prop master and armorer). Everybody knows you shouldn't drive while drunk. When somebody does that anyways it is not hard to find an 'expert' to day you shouldn't drive drunk. To further back that claim, the media outlet do a poll on their website and in the coverage claim that 98% of the Americans day it is stupid to drive while intoxicated. Yet, we have hundreds of DUI every weekend... So theory is one, reality is a whole other beast!

From my professional experience for a number of years on the set, this explanation is the best description of the how firearms/ prop guns are handled on the set and who is responsible. The safety precautions explained here are the reason why of the 10's of thousands of movies and TV with guns, that there haven't been such mishaps. This guy is 100% right on. The first and biggest thing that went wrong is they hired a person who was still a child in her mind and actions, and she even made the statement in her Police interrogation "I want to be there as little as possible" when she was talking about being at work. Well that was a different situation than this, he put the gun against his head and pulled the trigger. He was using blanks with a jammed projectile in the barrel that he did not know. This is an nearly unheard of occurance, the only time I have heard of anything like this was a french military drill where everyone had a magazine of blanks and then they had live rounds in some of their pouches. This was real, live rounds, being left on the table that the blanks were on. The gun was loaded negligently and handed off to Alec. Then he shot 2 people.

Based on how set protocols the main culprit would be the armourer, then in a lesser degree the AD and finally the producer. So Alec Baldwin was not responsible as the shooter but as the producer. That is why armourers are there in the forst place.

Live rounds are not allowed on any set. Police found 5 additional live rounds commingled with cosmetic/dummy rounds. Visually, they are identical. This movie had far too many gun scenes to have the prop master doing double duty as the armorer. They did end up separating the two positions, but I'm order to do that, they used a very inexperienced (inexpensive) armorer. This was her 3rd movie. The other two had minimal weapon scenes. Given that the set is surrounded by desert, I bet some of the crew went target shooting before filming even began or did it after a day of shooting and the armorer ended up unloading the 6 live rounds onto the armorer's cart from one of the 45s used for target practice. The live rounds became indistinguishable to the eye. Expecting an actor or an AD or anyone on a set to ever suspect a real bullet was in the chamber is so out of the realm of things became they are not allowed on any set! It would be the equivalent of expecting an actor or AD to check the tire pressure on a car used in a scene that was sitting on cinder blocks. There is literally nothing to check for. When an AD or an actor does opt to check a prop gun on the set, it's only to distinguish if the gun is 1 of 3 things: *Empty ("Cold") *Loaded with Cosmetic bullets (make no sound and look like regular bullets) *Loaded with Flash rounds (don't look like regular bullets but do make a "Bang!" sound. A gun with flash bullets is known as being "Hot". The reason it's known as being "Hot" has nothing to do with it having real bullets b/c no prop guns have those. The Hot is to let others know A) the bullets don't look real if there's a scene with a lense angle close enough to see the rounds in a gun and/or B) To expect a loud sound from the flash, esp with ear protection and/or C) if it's hot, the barrel end cannot be within a couple of feet of someone when fired because it may burn or bruise the skin (rare).

Something to consider is that an "Army General" isn't someone whose job it is to make sure firearms are safely handled, stored and used. Also, an Army General would only, hopefully, be giving firearms to military professionals who have already been heavily trained in the use of firearms. If, as a civilian who has no firearm training, I was handed a firearm by an "Army General", I'd have far more trust in his ability to tell whether a firearm is safe to handle than if I had to rely on my own judgement. At least I'd hope that an "Army General" would know more about firearms than your average civilian.

@@Nevir202 if he or anyone else did it the way they’re supposed to, he’d remove the magazine and after facing a safe direction, lock the slide to the rear, removing any round in the weapon, visually and physically inspect the weapon show you the clear and empty chamber for your secondary verification before handing you the weapon. As an LEO weapons instructor, we teach this to all of our officers and agents.

@@TheTheo58 Still doesn't explain how she allowed non cleared firearms to be on set. I read she prepped them for the scene and left them on a cart outside the set. That is totally the wrong way to do things, but for the sake of argument, guns loaded with appropriate blanks, NOT bullets, left on the cart for the AD. IF that is what happened girl would still be alive. If she thinks she 'forgot' to clear check re-check then load with blanks, that is a huge problem. Unattended guns sitting a cart, while she is off doing other duties is a huge security risk. This is negligence beyond comprehension, or there is more to this 'accident'

Another interview they said that a couple of the people who are supposed to be watching the guns or couple people who are working on the set actually took the guns off to do live ammunition target practice so they obviously left a bullet in one of them

There was a container of dummy rounds that "somehow" ended up with real bullets in it (we know the armorer was letting people target shoot, but we don't *know* that's where the fatal round came from). Baldwin's gun was loaded with 4 inert dummy rounds and two real bullets. Depending on how realistic the dummy rounds were it's possible that "only" the armorer would have been able to tell them apart (assuming she WOULD be able to tell them apart). The armorer didn't respect gun safety, and therefore nobody else on set respected gun safety. A malevolent actor (not necessarily a literal actor per se) *could* have taken advantage of the situation to stage an "accident"

Therefore it is reasonable to believe that the dummy rounds were identified by a spent primer, as is typical. It would be difficult to overlook live rounds in this process.

Thank you Brian. A word of caution on the dummy round. Having shot and reloaded ammo quite a bit, I noticed many times that a live round could have it's primer struck and not fire, but when struck again it would fire. Therefore a struck primer was not a reliable visible indication of a dummy round. So for dummy rounds I ended up drilling a large hole in the side of the case so as to provide a more positive indication of it being a dummy round. If anyone does practice with dummy rounds, like for loading a magazine, I suggest doing this in addition to your other safety measures.

You can see a light strike on the primer though. As shown in the video, the dimple put into a dummy is much deeper than any pin strike. I drill cases as well when making proofs but, as mentioned, that doesn't work on camera.

Apparently this method has worked on thousands of movies. You forget that sometimes the audience sees the bullet. And a big hole in them would ruin the illusion.

In the Army, the Armorer will inspect the weapon thoroughly for any defects or ammunition allowing the soldier to visual inspected it too. Before handling and releasing the weapon to another soldier. Safety First! 😎👍🇺🇸

I read that this is supposed to be the case on movie sets, too. The AD handed the gun to Baldwin. He should never have touched it. The armorer inspects, hands it to the actor who performs the same inspection.

@@chesterwilberforce9832 Yep, the major difference here is that in the military (I was air force, so im using more general terms 🤣) everyone around you has had those protocols and regulations hammered into their heads even if they're not the armorer or the one receiving the weapon or ammo, so if someone is enough of an idiot to cut corners they would be quickly corrected and reprimanded. This isn't the case on movie sets. I'd be willing to bet very few people on set know anything about guns, let alone safety protocols and regulations for weapons. And even if they did they might not be confident enough in their knowledge to correct them. However I know Baldwin has been on plenty of movie sets with firearms, him and probably a few others should have known better, extreme negligence here.

Great to hear a expert on the "Rust" situation. From what I see and saw in news reports, it was a 'fast and loose' production, the producers were trying to cut costs anyway they can. Safety was not a priority. From other experts and New Mexico Authorities, regulations were broken.
