Please, please, please debunk this ridiculous concept - a “supermajority “ does not exist in the British parliamentary system.

Yes, it does. It's when a party has more than 60% of the seats in parliament, which polls are saying Labour will exceed

Famously the UK pretends to have a federalised decentralised devolved non hierarchical democracy but actually has one of the strongest unitary executives outside of dictatorships Effectively any prime minister (with or without a mandate) as long as they have 50% plus one votes has 100% of the power. It’s completely top down so long as the PM has the support of their party Supermajorities are the systems that are required to overcome obstructionist senates or federalised states that have veto power. None of which the UK has. The House of Lords has very little power, are easy to overcome with time, and rarely involve themselves in obstructing legislation for fear of undermining their own existence. The PM has the fiat to bend the constitution to their whim without 66.7 % of the vote as long as they don’t fall foul of legal powers they are constrained to Whoever says supermajority’s exist or are relevant in the UK has been smoking something

@@Aloddff No one is saying that the UK has a supermajority requirement in anything, just that the idea of a supermajority in a parliamentary system is not impossible. Even just a couple of years ago, the supermajority criteria is used by the Fixed-term Parliaments Act, although the true power requires only a simple majority. You're simply too full of yourself to see that you're making an argument against something you misunderstood.

"Super"majority isnt a real term. Its journalistic hyperbole. A Majority - ie one more vote than the other party - is a majority. No matter how many more votes there are its still just a majority.

I used to vote Green in the belief that saving the planet was the only matter of real importance before I woke up to the crazy ideologies that they espouse alongside ‘conventional’ green thinking, as now to a large extent do all the mainstream parties. How did we get here? I shall vote for REFORM on Thursday as the only voice of reason and good old fashioned British common sense.

Tactical voting could help reduce the numbers of Tory MPs and unpopular Labour MPs elected. Tactical voting resources vary depending on the reason for tactical voting. Suggestions for tactical voting will also vary due to policy, political party, dataset and methodologies used. The low enthusiasm for both parties and Starmer’s relative lack of popularity means this strategy of declaring the election already over and lowering incentive for Labour turnout isn’t without merit. Everyone thought governor Dewey had 1948 wrapped up and his strategy of keeping his head down and avoiding anything controversial ending up costing him come Election Day.

I'm not sure this is even a bad thing for labour or the country as a whole. In the end its not important under UK traditions whether a party has a comfortable 30 seat lead or 130. Some lab candidates won't get their seat, but thats political life. The labour lead is strong enough for people to vote not only strategically but also according to their true preferences, even under fptp. And with labours forceful move to the right, I'm sure they factored in some defections on the left.

Reject Reform Reform UK is the reinvented Brexit party which is the reinvented UKIP party which is the reinvented BNP. It is extremely right wing and it's only real motives are self enrichment and abuse of power. The British public voted for Brexit believing the lies told by Farage, Johnson, Widdecombe, Hoey, Rees-Mogg, Davies, Barclay, Gove and many, many more believing that we would stop immigration, raise wages, cut the cost of living and be so much better off as a country. All of these have proven to be scurrilous lies and they knew this from the outset. Brexit has given us record NHS waiting lists, double digit inflation, a near tripling of energy costs, falling wages, rising food prices, record national debt, record immigration, destroyed private pension funds and so much more and yet Reform want to go in even harder, make us even poorer, dismantle the NHS and worse, attack the weak, disabled, old and infirm in our society. The right wing has failed the UK but in the process they have made themselves much richer. Reform will do the same and more because they really don't care about ordinary people in spite of their lies claiming that they do. Do not be fooled by prophets hearing false witness: Farage is as dishonest as Sunak, Truss, Gove, Rees-Mogg, Hague, Redwood, Johnson, Braverman, Kwarteng, Javid, Patel, Barclay, Baker, Cleverly, Jenrick, ... They are all in this entirely for themselves.
