@@mrblueblack but I don't like the idea some engineers (it's usually engineering students) who think that their major is the only thing important in the world and others are useless and anyone can do, don't get me wrong engineering is very much important in our society but I as an engineer I can't become a really good artist because I'm an engineer or become in this case a really good business man because I'm an engineer, each field requires years of practice and knowledge to become really good at it, it's an insult to others who spend decades trying to become masters at something and an a so called engineer comes and tells them he can do it better than them, over 90% of engineers are humbled people who love their field and have passion for it, the ones who think they are the only good thing are either non engineers or failed engineers trying to make themselves feel better.

I have a theory: they are CEO not because they studied engineering but because studying engineering requires you to work the logical and analytical muscle of your brain. And being able to think logically is an important skill to have as a CEO. I reckon if you done a brain scan of a bunch of CEOs brains, that the regions responsible for abstract thinking would be larger than average. A particular region of Einstein's brain is 20% larger than the average human responsible for imagination.

Those who fail to make the right decisions early in life end up regretting it. No i do not think so, i think they want people to train more their logical and problem solving abilities because mostly economics and real problems require real solutions where people put their hands on the things they are doing, usually when someone start a bussiness if that person priorices their bussiness to solve problems instead of thinking what could be the millonaire idea to give they money, its not limited to a engineer but to logical, mathematics and problem solving capabilities, but for worse, one is usually fixing logical things when one study as engineer, software or mechatronics you usually wake up and look at your workplace thinking you need to do this and that or try to do this with that daily, every day, so you master the ability of learn to solve things trying differents things and being logical, most MBAs usually do not chew to solve problems as continously as engineers who are most trained on puting hands on it daily and with the solving problems mindset instead of thinking in other way (well of course there are people on both sideways but you mostly gonna find a problem solver on an engineers school than other places).

One thing that mentioned in passing in the video but actually is crucial is, engineering background can help differentiating between people who says they can solve the problem and the people who actually can solve the problem. People always say that CEOs can delegate the details to other people, but this is the part that's actually hard, finding the right people. CEOs need to identify people who actually know what they're talking about, not just memorizing a talking point the night before. This is the same problem as finding the right CEO. Everyone can talk, but only a few can deliver.
@tiffariff
@tiffariff 2 ай бұрын
Disagree, some can deliver, but not talk efficiently. There are brilliant minds and ideas in many people who just don’t know how to present it right. That’s why you have many companies set up where the engineer is not in the front lines but behind- when you have an extroverted engineer like musk or honestly most of these CEOs listed- of course they’re great. But not many engineers are the best at presentation like them.

I think its more a difference in personality. Engineers are very smart but not very outgoing, and have a harder time talking to people in general. Business majors are the opposite. Both are needed in the company, the business major talks to the client and tells the engineering major what kind of product they want. This is of course easier said than done since the engineering major knows that some things arent possible. This can lead to complaining on both sides and a lot of misunderstanding.

Can confirm, I'm about to graduate in engineering and throughout my entire college life Goldman Sachs kept trying to hire engineers at my university to work for them. Not because they needed any engineering expertise, but their internal data showed that their most productive and lucrative employees all had engineering backgrounds. So they actually started focusing on trying to sway engineering students to go to the business side and focused less on hiring MBAs. Not to sound mean, but engineering students within 2 years have better math and critical thinking skills than most business students at that same time (and yes we can write internal documents, lab reports and research reports drilled that into our heads. And of course engineers have social skills, imagine group projects cranked to 11 for design courses.) A course in economics is really all that's necessary for them to figure out what they need to do, or a month or 2 on the job. The other 2 years of hell are just a stamp of approval to say that they're very disciplined and their brain can work in overdrive in severe stress.

Hello, I don't know if you have already graduated, if so, let me congratulate you for the great effort you made to reach the end of this career, I'm sure it was a great challenge. by statistics it is very comfortable to think that engineers and only engineers are the ones that give results and more if you were there to witness this event, I am sure that any other student outside the engineering area would also be suitable as the MBA, since it depends personally of the capacity of the person in my opinion, for the better or for worse, it is true that engineers have more opportunities to grow because of the educational background they have and also because of the history of developed skills, we know a little about everything to a degree professional, all and more as engineers we must know how to apply our personal knowledge and skills in a good way to achieve our goals, I really liked your comment, have a good day.

I am a VP at Morgan Stanley and what you say is the half truth. Yes engineers are way better at math and hence are way better at analyst roles especially the quant jobs. But as you go higher up to associate and VP levels, skills from accounting, management and law become more imp as you have internal controls, costing, management and compliance to look after and then business students get the upper hand. Ofc the executives won't tell you this as we want engineers to do the math stuff for us but the fact is most of them get stuck at analyst. Those who go up do an MBA or something like CFA, that's the ugly truth. No one is gonna tell you this, I am even saying this as this is a burner account exactly for things like this.

MBA programs just give you tools just like anything else. I went to school for computer engineering, and now I am learning BA and PM concepts to apply to my work. The real reason why so many effective CEOs are engineers is because they are taught on how to apply concepts in the real world. Engineering is also called Applied Science. It is the application of theoretical (scientific) concepts and making them a reality.

This is true engineering is an applied science where theory has a reason for being and this is to be able to do practical things and understand why of them. This field is very interesting, because it shows us that the most complex things can be very simple as long as you give them the right approach, it happened to me, when I was little I looked at engineering things in books, focused on the mathematical area and I did not understand anything, I thought it was for geniuses and they were things impossible to solve. Now that I'm at university and studying engineering, I ran into those kinds of problems again and luckily everything was much more familiar, it was just a matter of understanding everything. I've never used a single technical thing I learned during these 5 years, but.. having the resilience to keep working on a problem, being comfortable with numbers and not feeling unmotivated when you have to learn something you have absolutely no f idea what it is are the valuable things I learn during college that I carried with me for the rest of my life.

US presidents are mostly politicians or have business ties rich people who back them or both. It's a popularity contest that requires money and connection and control over the media. People think their votes matter but most of the time they are not voting on the issue, they are voting on whoever gets more screen time and media attention.

I've worked as a strategic account manager, consultant, and corporate strategy analyst. I also have 10+ other streams of income and stealth startup I'm currently building. Currently making $500k+ 4 years out of college. I forgot everything about engineering, but my critical thinking and problem solving skills are still used in my day-to-day task, not all engineers will be good entrepreneur/business person as well, because you also need to think realistically and have good EQ
