An interesting talk about Steiner. I have had an interest in the Theosophical philosophy for a number of years, and have read a little about him. I think I read The Knowledge of Higher Worlds a long time ago, but don’t remember much of it. I checked it out from the library. I do know this. There were some Theosophists who came from a Christian background, and tried to move Theosophy into a Christianized direction. It wasn’t obvious at first of what they were doing, but the more you read on about the Theosophical movement, the more obvious it becomes. These were Charles Leadbetter, Annie Besant and Alice Bailey. Alice Bailey went off on a wild tangent about what Theosophy was about, and entered a whole new realm that was just a glorified Christianity, and had little to do with her understanding of the Secret Doctrine, and the other early Theosophical texts. Her husband was closely involved with the Jesuits. 🚩 Charles Leadbeater wanted to create a “Catholic” Theosophy, with a pope (him of corse), with priests, and cardinals and such, with a whole focus on rituals. Steiner may have had the same motif at first, to Christianize Theosophy. To make it into something it was not. I, however, am not going to speculate on that. Maybe later. 🤨

Lachman is a brilliant scholar with a voluminous knowledge base. His Steiner biography is correctly defined as an introduction. One of the attractive Strengths (apparently) to this biography is, as Gary notes, the fact that Gary is something of an objective 'outsider' studying Steiner. There are many biographies about Steiner, most of which are written by long-time, true believer Anthroposophists. Most academic students of Steiner tend to become 'true believers', due to the sheer genius and many material accomplishments in a variety of fields, which are part of his ongoing legacy. Waldorf education, the largest private education association in the world is one example. However, speculation about what Steiner's greatest accomplishment is; education, medicine, art, agriculture, Anthroposophy (etc) misses the point that Steiner was one of the great creative geniuses of modern times, whose base of knowledge has been publicly revealed for the first time ever. Steiner says that these truths have always been know, but were hidden from the masses in the mysteries of both spirituality and physical science.

I felt this was a very uplifting experience to hear this conversation. To be honest, I look at my interest in esoteric subjects as sad. I can understand why there is such a battle between a dumbed down materialist idea of your worth as a worker or part of a weaponized social structure vs adventuring in one's inner world along this path of intellects like Steiner and the rest. This was definitely a gnostic high like that film, My Dinner with Andre. Not only was it entertaining because y'all know the landscape of these ideas and people and the culture and history around them but it has a signature of healthy respect for practical wisdom beyond the hero worship of idealists. I think at the end of any age, people encapsulate what is vanishing like a wine for future generations. We all are truly part of a secret society in that sense. It is about sensitivity against this machine world of Ahriman. Someone like Steiner lives on as bridging the poles of the individual and the mastermind of a community of humanity. I look at it like they had alchemical imaginations that we're grounded in observing natural phenomenon while realizing these epiphanies then feeding back and evolving us. I like the part about how he used the fact that we can't help but measure other things against our self perception instead of transcending above our biases. This is all what I see as the good side of the occult. I guess thinking like that is frowned upon as judgemental but I mean Steiner was right on talking about a vaccine to neuter our souls. This covid stuff is 100x worse than the Bolshevik Revolution. Everything now is a psy op algorithm. I like the idea that the internet was left on in the Ukraine so they can always use this data feedback of our inner world to program the masonic pop cult with. Professor Benjamin Teitelbaum wrote War for Eternity interviewing Steve Bannon and Alexander Dugan, who is the Alex Jones of Russia - they openly say they are Traditionalists who are speeding up the downfall of this age via a eugenics catastrophe that will bring in a golden age for these elites. This is the duality of Plato's Republic - this dangerous elitism; but I guess it is part of the invigoration of humanity and through the drama of these ideals battling for supremacy in our group self that we must be in awe and respect of along with the rest of nature. Our imaginations as bastions during a dark age of a fallen empire. I'm going to have to look into this book Putin is said to be reading. It is my understanding that that is why the Russian flag has the two heads looking two opposite ways like the Janus face. Russia aspires to take center stage by being the center of east meets west. Certainly, it should be noticed that we see the wider Israel development scheme occurring and I think this will probably be a cold war with Russia and Brendon O'Connell has this theory that Trump will be the next president and there will be this American centric tech arms race but that stuff will be used against all of this when these globalists plan to have this great reset completed by 2030. They are actually pretty obvious once you learn these patterns, not to be insulting since you all know more about this than me I'm sure but they definitely used the Pluto's return in the date of 2/22/2022 to launch this war and with World War 1 they started that on a specific date and ended it on a specific date and they released that information in newspapers before it happened. I don't mean to go on a tangent I just see the parallel with how his attempt to unite the intelligence of Europe with the Goethe Temple was disrupted with World War I and however this current warfare will change things. I think the electricity and the internet being turned off and blamed on Russia is a likely occurrence and again I think I'm wise enough to see the positives in the negatives and how the cabal of social controllers may be more than just evil for the response to that could be good. There is this idea that we can't have our best moments without surviving our worst and how that can be taken advantage of as a coping/evolutionary mechanism.

This is - to me - an interesting conversation at the border between the past (however it may be interpreted by various people) and a possible future of esoteric possibilities. It is particularly nice for those of us (like me) who cannot read all the books that might be of interest, to have discussions that cover many points of view within the perspectives of people who have read them. As to the future directions to take: this discussion seems to be quite a good start at making the participatory turn in coming to the next understanding of the human condition.

Reviews of this book on Amazon about Gary Lachman include phrases like "not unrealistic" and "takes a balanced approach". These opinions of Lachman coincide with my perception of Steiner after I read his 1905 lectures. I recall Steiner as not being a fan of Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity because it wasn't practical and was, basically, useless in the daily life of an individual. To paraphrase (hopefully, correctly): Steiner said that Einstein could only theorize about the 4th dimension, whereas he could show people how to enter the 4th dimension experientially.

Very good book by Gary Lachman. I have been a student of Steiner for more than tree decades and reading his work is extremely hard and easy to misunderstand ; we have to read lots of his stuff to get a clear view of what he means. I noticed that you swapped the head(nerves) and the gut(metabolism) functions around (page 189) the exact mistake I made in the beginning. Why should the economy be equated to the nerves & senses system of the human constitution instead of the gut? Because the economic science proper does not deal with commodities/substance but with price trends, in order to rectify abnormal price increase/decrease. Ideally of course, but it doesn't happen. The cultural domain he equates with the metabolism/willpower system. Putin reads Anthroposophy ?!!! No wonder the man is being loved by many people, myself.

I went to a Steiner school (aka 'Waldorf school'). That was back in 1970-1971. One of my classmates was Judy Collins' kid sister (yes, CS&N's "Suite Judy Blue Eyes"). Six years later (1976), I found myself at Plaza Sound Studios, NYC, when 'Blondie' was recording their first album there. What was I doing there? That's a long story. I never met Gary, but I was there when he got trapped in an elevator with a member of The Rockettes (Plaza Sound was located above Radio City Music Hall). He was trapped in the elevator; I was in the lobby, trying to use the elevator. Our paths actually though, never crossed; however, the thought just crossed my mind: What was the actual circumstance and mindset behind the writing of the song-"I'm Touched By Your Presence (Dear)".

Ah, yes; I looked it up on wikipedia: Mr. Lachman apparently wrote "I'm Touched By Presence, Dear" for his then girlfriend with whom he was having a psychic convergence. He wrote it during the tour in support of the first 'Blondie' album. I just got off the phone with my old girlfriend. I met her the very next night after I was standing behind Deborah Harry in the studio, listening to a playback of 'In The Flesh'. I could tell that she knew I was going to call.

At 47:00mn, you attempt to explain the concept of an 'encounter with the guardian of the threshold'. I understand that the event would be highly sublime in nature, complex and difficult to define. In part, I view it as a time frame required by an upcoming initiate, to face and shed what fundamental stronghold over human experience the ruler of the air has, as a matter of course, over mankind. The 'ruler of the air' is a term and concept employed in the Bible. Such a consideration as this was not discussed in both your attempts at defining the 'encounter'.

The Dark Night of the Soul and The Creative Crisis might have some common ground. The Blind Owl knows. Excusable excess. “A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, so that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” “If we do not believe within ourselves, this deeply rooted feeling that there is something higher than ourselves, we shall never find the strength to evolve into something higher.” Failing to romanticize expositors in the quietness of our hearts is a failure to live. I am rarely bored in life, but listening to New Thinking Allowed makes invigoration easy.

Right off the bat.. I really don’t think Steiner should be looked at under the light of a “mid life crisis”.. his spiritual life was alive and well throughout his entire life, as he mentions on many occasions, including his autobiography.. which he wrote on his death bed to serve as a document that would link seemingly unrelated activities into one unified goal in life. His pivot at the age of 40 came when he realized his work would not be fully confronted in the academic circles he was moving through in the 1880s. He actually had a chance to be Nietzsches heir as Germany’s eminent thinker, but as this opportunity passed.. he changed course, quite consciously. Overall I don’t find Lachman’s portrait of Steiner the person to be very accurate.

In his work at the Goethe Archive, you can find passages along the lines of.. “this isn’t at all what I’m being asked and paid to write about, and it’s not necessary to include in this work.. but I will write about it anyway out for an inner sense of duty to tell the truth when it is recognized.” He clearly had an orientation that he followed through all of his work, from his early 20s onward.

He is said to have met his spiritual “master” .. an advisor or guru of sorts.. while he was still a teenager traveling from his home to his “high school” by train, via an illiterate herb gatherer and nature mystic. This advisor lead him along a very tedious path of initiation, which allowed him to harness his psychic abilities and unite it with his genius level intellect. He had been seeking this kind of synthesis since he was a boy, given his difficulties distinguishing the material world with his psychic visions. Given all this, it seems Lachman had an agenda prior to really immersing himself in the life of Steiner, without this bias it’s hard to see where he would get the theory at all.

I refer, once again, to Anthony Storr's "Feet of Clay;" wherein one will find a rational, fair, and critical evaluation of the life and work of Rudolph Steiner.

His critique of Steiner was quite positive compared with the others in that book. Not sure it was that unbiased tho it's a book that adopts a line and pretty much sticks to it

Dear Dr. Jeffrey, There are so many errors and personal interpretations of Steiner's work. Lachman's ideas are completely dated and incredibly superficial. He has no understanding of Steiner's relationship to Goethe. Steiner living thinking was already developed before his work on Goethe. This can all be read in Das Erwecken des Herzdenkens by Florin Lowndes. He also made a serious error saying that Steiner disagreed with Nietzsche - this means Lachman did not read Steiner's Nietsche book! The list goes on. Other mistakes by Lachman: Goethe's color theory, Steiner relationship to Theosophy. His understanding of the Philosophy of Freedom is incorrect and he was unable to state the book's thesis. In order to be a Steiner researcher you need a knowledge of German, not a seat at Chris Bamford's salon. Lachman's main truth was that the anthroposophists are stuck and have few spiritual abilities and barely continued to Steiner's work on freedom in society or threefold social order.
