I started watching norm way back in the mid 80s … and I still watch the show every day and I’m very happy to watch him on KZbin.. and have built a few things that he has done… and I think i have bought a few plans… and I think I would love to meet him in person.. .. God gave him a Talent and he has used it very well…

God, I miss watching this with my Dad and then building some of them together.

It's funny, it was a family joke that my dad didn't know which of a hammer you used. His passion on weekends was golf. My mom actually sat with me & watched all these shows, this old house, n.y.w. & hometime.

Norm, you're the best master carpenter that I've ever seen on PBS, when I was younger, years ago!

He is great. But check out Peter Follansbee, who could make this secretary in the woods with an axe. Roy Underhill could make it without power tools … but he’d never finish it!
@aramis29511 ай бұрын
Yeah, those old time woodworkers are a waste of time for Abram. His power tools are the best to use for "the most popular, and improved" projects that I've seen him build in previous seasons and episodes of this program channel!

We had an antique secretary in our kitchen! This one looks cool and I don’t remember seeing this episode. Nice.

Most have probably seen in the behind-the-scenes videos one of the secretaries Norm made is still hanging in the shop, looking back it has been there since the start of season 12 so pretty much 25 years now.

Excellent and practical project and sage tutorial on door construction. NO MELAMINE on this Season 11 kitchen project !!! - just solid mahogany and mahogany plywood materials for this kitchen work space. I had forgotten about this project from the original 1999 PBS/WGBH airing and will add it to my wish TO DO LIST except it will be used in the barn hanging it on one of the paddock walls as a secretary for farm paperwork! Thanks to the 2024 Crew for bringing these project episodes back to life and to Norm and Russ for The New Yankee Workshop memories.

After watching … it feels overly massive. Are the sides really 1.5” thick? Maybe that would work in some kitchens, but it seems like you could thin out or eliminate some of those layers. If you build it this size, it might be smarter to mount it on the wall with a French cleat. (And you know little kids are gonna hang on that desktop.)
@TGC3211 ай бұрын
The average house was much bigger during this time. People had lots of room for projects like these around their homes.
@thegardenofeatin59659 ай бұрын
I'm sure you could eliminate the inner plywood panels of the carcass and use raised panel sides. Maybe set the center rail in the side panels to correspond to the dado the fixed shelf sits in, and put the holes for the movable shelf pins in the front and back stiles. Eliminates about a half sheet of plywood

This is something that can sit on top of a cupboard instead of hanging on a wall.

Agreed. It looks too big to be on its own, but I can see it used as an end piece on a kitchen cabinet system.
@greencello59911 ай бұрын
If it is to be used as a secretary, it would need to be hanging from the wall to allow a chair to fit underneath. It could be part of a cabinet system, nothing wrong with that, but space would be used for the cabinetry rather than for a chair.

Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.
